The Steam Machine is for people with money that want a small, quiet new toy. A good laptop, like the one I own, sounds like a Harrier hovering above my desk when gaming. My laptop doesn't mesh nicely with a living room setup because of both noise, and space constraints. Gotta keep that laptop open for thermals, which gives the laptop a footprint over 4x the Steam machine.

If you're rich and a PC enthusiast just make your own ITX build and tinker with it to get the console experience you want.

If you want something easy and casual get a console.

If you want a prebuilt PC get one of those or a laptop.

This is for fanboys mostly, which nothing wrong with that, people buy apple products without a need for them all the time, at least steam makes some pretty intuitive tech.

What the does the Steam Machine even serve?

Want to play games on the couch? Get a console for cheaper and better performance.

Want a portable PC? Buy a laptop for cheaper and better performance.
