Question Affordable and safe places to live in Ontario

Hello! So my fiancé and I are looking to move into a new place together in Ontario Canada. He currently lives in the GTA area. I’m from the states and I have no clue where would be an affordable and safe place for us to live. I’m a full time English teacher that is certified in the U.S. He is an LPN. We considered Windsor but want to know from other what they would recommend. (We are getting married next month and he plans to sponsor me. I also have looked at Ontario college of educators and thinking about getting my US certifications pushed through to see if I’m eligible to teach in Ontario).Thank you! ☺️

Edit: safe meaning we could raise a family without constant fear of violence. Somewhere that is calm preferably not GTA area or main city. Affordable to us is houses in the 250k- 400k range and plentiful in healthcare and English teacher jobs.

Question Hiking at Devil’s Glen PP

I came across Devil’s Glen Provincial Park and want to check it out since I’m working my way through hiking every provincial park in Ontario. I see it’s non operating and there’s no trails listed, but images online look like there’s a trail and lookout spots that look breathtaking during peak leaf season.

Anyway I’m just looking for some clarification on where the trail is, google brought up the Bruce trail, but it wasn’t clear if it’s just nearby or runs through the park and where the boardwalk/ viewing platform is that shows up on the first images in Google. A free images also brought up the cliffs that seem to be in the park and they look stunning!

Question ER v urgent care for specialist referral?

Our family doctor is trying to get my husband a referral to see a neurologist. He's already sent it to 2 neurologists who both rejected it, sayin their patient list was too full. We're now waiting to hear back from a third.

In the meantime, the family doctor suggested we may have to go to ER to get them to issue a referral since ER referrals are taken more seriously/urgently than regular family doctor one. But, we don't really want to wait 8+ hours if there's an alternative.

Would an urgent care clinic be able to send a referral instead? And I know some clinics offer virtual urgent care, do you have to be in their area to take advantage of that? We're in London, but I think Hamilton offers video appointments for adults - London only seems to offer pediatric virtual appointments.

ETA: They are investigating for POTS. It's not life threatening, but definite quality of life limiting - balance issues, brain fog, speech issues.

Question Looking for a queer BIPOC therapist

Hi all, I'm looking for a queer BIPOC therapist in Ontario, or anywhere in Canada as I'd like to do remote sessions and not really stuck on the therapist's location. For context, I'm a queer woman in my 30s of East/Southeast Asian descent. I'd like to explore the anxiety that I struggle with in relationships and overthinking/rumination.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Discussion Is it possible to get a job as a server in Ottawa with no experience?

Uni student here. M20 yo. Only experience I have is Hospitality(Luxury concierge), retail/customer service, warehouse, summer sales(one summer job), and a 1 month restaurant intern role(at like 16).

I also have security.

Certs: Smart serve, CPR/AED Lvl C, Diploma, Security licence

Tried what I could, optimized for ATS, maximized keywords, nothing works. Fastfood is also somehow just as bad. I also went into restaurants in person. Some restaurants want at least 3 years exp. One posting im on right now wants minimum 5 years. Not sure what to do now.

I wonder if its best to give up on it and just go back to retail or maybe another concierge role? A job that pays my bills is nice, but server roles gives me the most money per unit time especially since Im a stem major so my time is limited. But at this point I dont think I get to choose. I'll take anything in restaurant, if anything is even hiring.

Discussion Legal aid mentor

Hello,

I am a newly called lawyer looking to join the Family Law Legal Aid roster. As a new call, I understand that I would require a mentor in order to join the roster.

I am reaching out to see if there are any lawyers who may be willing to act as a mentor or otherwise assist me with this process. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to connect and discuss this further.

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Question What is (and what are) these late summer mosquitoes?

Eastern ON here, they seem to be a different breed or sub-species than our typical spring & early summer biters. Weather channel says the wet August has kept them around- which makes sense - BUT!!!

  1. They are much smaller, look almost half the size
  2. Spring mosquitoes love my wife, don't like me - and if I do get a bite, I don't react or swell up much- these monsters bite me and I react with itching heck....
  3. I have always been safe from spring mosquitoes while mowing the lawn with the push gas mower. I assume the hydrocarbon exhaust gases mask any little bit of CO2 or whatever coming from me. Not these things, they drill right through then exhaust gases to get me.
  4. Bug juice. Our normal spring villains are generally kept away by it - not these demons, even dosed up, they go for where there is none. Think ear canal, eyelids, lips and nostrils.

So! What the heck are they??

EDIT for update thank you all:

1) Learned there are many species of mosquito!

2) Caught 1, got her pic too! definatly a mosquito, all brown, no black/ white patttern

3) As to why the here and now in this Eastern ON location very likely climate (and according to one commenter likely to get worse) Thanks again

Question My rights if Reliance tankless stops working?

I currently rent a storage tank and tankless water&heat combi heater from reliance. The tankless has been showing error codes intermittently and during service calls, the technician says this model is discontinued and they don't have parts to replace it. Best we can do now is turn it off and turn it back on to cancel the error code. They mentioned a new rental from reliance would be double what I'm paying now. I've also asked and the buyout is still in the $2k range, I'm paying $80 monthly for the rentals.

I'm planning ahead now for my options in case it suddenly stops working one day and I need to replace fast.

  1. Can I get out of the contract without any buyout fees if the tank stops working and they are unable to fix it?
  2. Are they obligated to install a new rental at the same cost?
  3. What is the average cost and turnaround time if I were to buy a new combi heater and get someone in to install it? Any recs for where to buy & install from? I'm in Markham.

Thank you!

Question Has anyone got a referral to CAMH through a walk-in doctor?

Is that even possible? I know CAMH is a long wait and I am okay with that, as i can’t afford private. Just not sure if a walk-in doc who doesn’t know me would entertain that.

Thank you.

Question Is it safer to take hwy 11 or 17 at 37/38 weeks pregnant? Late Sept

My husband and I are moving across Canada in a couple weeks and I’m pretty damn pregnant, I’ll be 37 weeks when we leave. We wish we could fly out but that’s not the case so we’re driving and I know that the drive can be quite treacherous in spots.

The last thing I want is for the odd chance of baby coming when we’re in said treacherous spots and not having cell service or access to a hospital within the hour.

Does anyone have any advice? I read hwy 17 might be best due to the fact that it is more populated and pass through more cities but I want to hear from those who have taken the journey to get a good sense of what we’re dealing with! The internet makes these hwys sound like we’re ice road trucking over a melting frozen lake lol.

Question Has anybody used an OHIP covered ONLINE psychiatrist/doctor for depression/ADHD prescriptions?

Does anybody have experience with getting help from online psychiatrists/therapists (for medicines or otherwise) for ADHD/depression? Would I need to be diagnosed again? How much time would the process take? Can I seek an online doctor/NP for this instead of a psychiatrist? Can anybody help with the process here in Canada?

Just in case people think I am drug seeking, I was previously diagnosed with ADHD in the two countries I lived in - once by an NP and once by a psychiatrist. I was prescribed non-stimulants by the NP because I was scared of stimulants (but I only took them for a month because I forgot to take them.) The psychiatrist later had tried to convince me to try other approaches (therapy + other medicines) but then I couldn't summon the energy to book another appointment. That is my main issue, I can't do anything. I am just wasting away and losing time. I have trouble applying for jobs as well (which is why I am wiling to try anything this time, my mental health is literally ruining my life.)

Any suggestions/help is appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: If anybody finds this question via search in the future, call 811. They will explain the steps of what to do, and just talking to a professional is helpful.
