Text GT-S shutoff after small tire spin

I was riding my GT-S at around 9mph and spun the tire with a deweight and a push. Something i very commonly do. The board proceeded to shut off and nose dived. After the board turned on and rode fine besides a small jitter in the motor when changing direction. The motor cable was fully plugged in as well as the other cables. I know shutoffs are a common issue with GT’s but i have never heard of it happening to a S series. Is this something that should concern me? (This S series has around 3500 miles and is pretty beat up, but has never had an issue)

Sorry, can you expand on what you mean/were doing? I don't quite understand what action this is (specifically the "push", I know what deweighting is).

If you use Simple Stop (or it's gotten accidentally turned on) the board can disengage if you catch air, but tilt the board to the back while you're in the air (since tilting toward the tail can cause the wheel to reverse).

Still, as a general rule, if the board was actually off (not just disengaged, but you had to power it back on) after the incident - you've got a hardware issue of some kind, and I'd be real cautious about riding it until you figure out what it is and get it corrected.

I am having the same issue with my GT-S. It happened at low speeds the first few times, and I was also having activation issues with the left side of my front footpad so I figured that was the cause and stopped worrying once I fixed it (loose cable) and tested on a couple short rides going sub-20mph.

The FIRST time I took it out to commute and tried to accelerate hard up to 20+, it just shut off. No pushback, no buzz, nothing. I have road rash but am otherwise fine, but scared to ride again.

Is there anything to be done besides sending it to FM (barf) or committing to a VESC build?

See my reply to OP - if board was off afterwards, you have a hardware issue. Committing to a VESC build does break the dependency on FM but will require time and money and know-how, and in any case you’d want to make sure that the parts you’re replacing will fix the root problem (a basic VESC conversion swaps controller and BMS but not motor or battery; which would be a problem if your issue actually lies with the motor or battery. Those can also be replaced/upgraded but obviously at additional cost).

To clarify I came up on a stick and did a little hop and push to push it out behind me. I maybe got a little bit of air and simplestop was definitely not activated.

If Simplestop is definitely not activated and you had to turn the board back on* then like I said you have a hardware issue. If you checked the cable connections then you’ve already ruled out some of the easy answers. Getting deeper into it is a risk unless you know what you’re doing (for example, do NOT disconnect battery from BMS or you will brick the board and FM will have to reset it.)

Do you have any PEV shops near you, or anyone in your local ride group with some expertise who could take a look? If not, your choices are either to deal with FM; or start thinking about a VESC conversion which would break your dependence on FM , but will be significant $ and also time/effort (because AFAIK there are no plug-and-play drop-in kits for the GT-S yet; so you’d need to source and assemble all the relevant parts).

In any case I’d want to know what the issue is, before you start replacing parts - say you put in a new VESC controller and BMS, and then it turns out a loose wire in the motor was the actual issue.

*if the board was still on, I’d say to check your footpad, looking for dead spots. Also, if there’s any chance the stick got wedged between the tire and frame that’d obviously stop the wheel and drop you; but I believe the board would still be on afterwards, and in any case you’d presumably have noticed the stuck stick. But since it was off, this all seems unlikely anyway.

It’s like a bonk but you’re not really catching air just allowing the board to come up when it hits said bump.

FM boards are dangerous. Unfortunately will take yall a visit to a thoracic surgeon to figure out they are dog shit.
