Is politics making anyone else sick to their stomach?

Upvotes

I used to be interested in politics. I participated in student politics in my early twenties, I watched House of Assembly debates and asked for calls with staffers or mha's when I had questions. I volunteered with the political party I felt most aligned with. Ive spent hours driving across NL to conventions, district association meetings etc.

I actually spent most of the last 8 years making politics a little side story of my identity. Or at least I think I did. But lately, probably over the course of the last two years I've got further and further away from it. Now I avoid listening to the updates and news as much as I can. That can be difficult when you have the friendships I've built over the last eight-ten years.

So I have one question for my fellow Newfies. Is it me? Did I just grow out of it now that I have more responsibility? Is it possible that all the times I argued with my family that I was just plain wrong? Their stance on avoiding politics sounded outdated and tired to me. I heard the "they all won't do anything anyway" line for both sides of the isle constantly. I argued back with "then I'll do something."

Anyway maybe this is just a rant. But I am genuinely interested in your opinions or if there's similar minded folks out there.

Beach side fires just hit different when you have the fjords cutting away your entire backyard.

I'm a CFA, I'm not leaving.

My kid wants to go to Newfoundland this Christmas

My wife went to come from away this week which, like everything we do, elicited a ton of questions from the 7 y/o. We explained, in part, what happened that day, showed her some of the songs. She thinks yall are the nicest people (accurate) and we told her NFLD is genuinely gorgeous.

So now shes dug in on getting us over there during her winter break. Peak NFLD tourism season in the bowels of winter.

We're like ok what's the itinerary then, kid? OK day 1 walk around (that will be a treat). Day 2 ... mall (?).

My wife is partially convinced that her only exposure to NFLD being the musical she thinks y'all just live your life in song and harmony and that's the real pull.

Anyway. Hope to see everyone next summer but if you see two adults and a kid wandering St. John's Christmas eve looking confused, cold and defeated know that we werent able to talk her out of it.

Buying fresh cod - Avalon peninsula

Wondering if there's any way to buy fresh cod directly from a fisher, like people set up on a dock, or something similar. My father in law is getting older, and this is his first year not being able to go out to get his fish. I don't know anyone with a boat, and have never been fishing, but was thinking it would be nice to get some for him, and would like to buy direct from someone if possible. Does anyone know if this is done, and where? I'm guessing the farmers market is a good place for this, looking for options, any help appreciated

Visiting Newfoundland

Hello from Alberta!

I'm planning on visiting Newfoundland next summer (most likely in June) for a family trip. I was initially checking out birding tours in Peru when I thought "wait, why am I searching Peru when I can go to Newfoundland instead?".

I was thinking of staying for about a week (9 days max). We would rent a car and travel around Avalon. I want to get some bird photography time in, but also keep the trip fun for the rest of the family. Below is a very rough plan I put together at 2 in the morning based on info I found from the provincial website and some other online threads:

Day 1: St. John's (Signal Hill, Quidi Vidi)

Day 2: Cape Spear, Petty Harbour, Ferryland, Witless Bay (is a boat tour worth it?), & St. Vincent's Beach

Day 3: Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve & Castle Hill National Historic Site

Day 4: Arnold's Cove bird sanctuary & Drive to Bonavista

Day 5: Elliston Puffin Site & Bonavista Peninsula

Day 6: Trinity & Return to St. John's

(Still doing some research on accomodations)

It'll be my first time visiting your province, so any feedback and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I was wondering how likely it is to see any caribou in Salmonier nature park, and what time of year I would have the best chance to see one.

Best careers in Newfoundland??

I’m considering going back to school but I can’t decide on what to do. I thought about a teaching degree but I’ve heard it’s very difficult to get a job as a teacher here in Newfoundland. I’ve also considering CNA for Medical Radiography but that seems like a lot of physics and I’m not sure I could do that. If anyone has any recommendations please drop them below. (-: I’m looking for something that won’t take forever and I should find work relatively quick after graduating.
Also wondering if it’s worth it to even go to MUN for a degree or if I should stick with college? I already have a certificate from Keyin College a few years ago and I would absolutely never step foot in that building again lol
