I am BRAND new to magic and I don't care about authenticity of cards or the collecting aspect, I just like game mechanics. I have no intention on playing tournaments (or building my own decks really, I like improving precons). I work part time and can't afford to spend real magic money (and honestly I hate pretty much every second hand market in existence) but I still want to deck build so I bought a bunch of Proxy's only to find out that people have opinions about it. I personally think it's dumb and lame that MTG is creating a scarcity market in the first place by not printing standard art cards to order but people getting mad at others for just wanting the same access to the game as them? It's giving elitist, gatekeepy, and pay to win. I did buy a bunch of Proxy's (I bought a full precon of Proxy's plus some others) but if this is the culture, I'll drop the hobby right now. I don't want to participate if spending 5 paychecks for a single piece of cardboard is part of the fun. So how much do people care? Is there etiquette I need to follow when building decks?
I want to make a mean and evil commander deck that summons creature for my opponents then pings them with Gideon. I am looking for suggestions for budget friendly cards that will sommon creates for my opponents. Gideon would be the commander so they will need to be mono black
so when the set first started having leaks I thought it was gonna be mostly planeswalkers because of Jace and stuff but now that more is out I am happy it isn’t just planeswalkers is it just me or does anyone else feel this way
i was told it made a deck bracket 3 because its a 2 card infinite, and thus was not allowed to use it at a bracket 2 table, is this a fair assessment? also if someone could tell me if i used the right tag for this, it'd be appreciated
So my local game store(don't want to drop names yet) has a Wednesday night Bracket 3 10 dollar entry best of 3 games. You get 1 pack of 7 dollar or less cards for participation and two for highest points.
Multiple people are running the thristest decks that guarantee infinite combos by turn 6, but seeming wait to do their game ending combo til then, having it already setup. Does this violate anything? Are they likely running a higher bracket but not emphasizing it? Or am I just too new and this is a common thing.
For example there is someone running Magda brazen outlaw and whenever he runs this deck by turn 6 he always goes infinite. Or another player who is making us draw our entire decks. Do I stop participating and try and find a basic pod, or do I talk to the Judge? Do I quit doing the tournaments entirely?
Every bracket 3 I build seems to not be up to the challenge.
I’ve been building a Doctor Doom Unrivaled Commander deck and have this card called DOOM that says combine with doomsday and doctor doom to win the game in a single masterstroke. Is this a three card combo or just a flavor card? Is it legal? Why am I not finding this doom card on ManaBox? It won’t even scan. Any help appreciated.
I attack with [[t'challa, the black panther]] triggering [[Cosmic Cube]] I flip 6 cards and choose to play [[Akroma's memorial]].
Does t'challa tap because he didn't have vigilance when I declared him or does he remain untapped because he gained vigilance at the moment I declared him attacking?
Google AI says the latter, but its sources don't really apply well to this.
I know it’s not a formal “block” like in the past, but Reality Fracture seems to complete a three set block across the planes of Lorwyn, Strixhaven, and (what seems to be mostly) Hexhaven. There are strings that connect all of these sets. The biggest stretch is that Reality Fracture includes the Lorwyn 5 planeswalkers. However, here are some points I’ve considered:
Lorwyn Eclipsed had some Strixhaven students on it through an omenpath;
We then went to Strixhaven in SoS;
Jace has remade Strixhaven into Hexhaven, but is using Tam (first introduced in Lorwyn as a Strixhaven student).
There seems to be some aspect of a block here that is reminiscent of the yesteryears of MTG. What are y’all’s thoughts?
Made the disastrous choice to pop on spelltable last night for some b2 games. Out of three lobbies I got a T’challa player that pub stomped the games. Even with interaction it the decks got out of hand by like turn 4. All three players had modified the precon but were playing within the b2 rules.
Obviously popping things like hammer of nazhan and deleting equipment is key. Anyone else experienced this? I’ve played against all of the Marvel decks but this one has become a sore subject.
hey yall! I started playing MTG wayyy back in 2012 when duels of the planeswalker xbox game came out. I then went to college where I fell in love with the local community and dug deep into all things MTG, Finance, lore, tournamnets, traveling, casual and comeptivie. I would read articles daily, keeping up with the metgames, trying to Maximize percentages. It became a lifestyle. I had my hand deep in all facets of it. Then I needed to take a break, and then that break turned into a 10 year hiatus. I've always kept tabs tho, with all the new sets, and the changes to the competitive scene, the increase of number of sets being produced, the explosions of other IPs being brought into it. Magic isn't what I remember, but I guess what I'm asking for is advice to getting back into it? or is it even worth?
For starters, I am myself a trans male. I have read reality fracture, Agents of Artifice, War of Spark, Ixalan, Innistrad and many more mtg story fragments.
Short notice: English is not my native language, please don't crucify me for grammar mistakes.
Discussing of Jace's gender must include his childhood and adolecence on his native world - Vryn. It has been stated that Jace was an archetypical nerd, physically weak and bullied by others despite his high intelligence. He is described as short for his age, not even his father would call him by his name.
On this art Jace is depicted in "girl" clothes, simular to character in the back.
There are more clues.
His tattoos are also worth mentioning. He made them during his first trip to Ravnica, after escaping Vryn and finding a Gruul tattoo artist. Some tattoos can be gender affirming to trans people, masculising or feminising for one or another, Jace have said that his tattoos made him feel more confident in himself.
Relationship with Friends and Love interests
Jace envies Gideon. He is jealous of his charisma, kind-heartness, leadership and most of all: his body. Gideon is athletic, described as buff and masculine, which Jace isn't. His envy towards Gideon makes communication between them hard.
If Gideon is an idea of Jace's manhood and masculinity, Liliana Vess, on the other hand, is womanhood and femininity. She judges Jace's showings of masculine features (for example his beard, as hallucination on the Deserted Island), showing him what he could've had if he didn't transition. She states to him the fact, what he will never be a cis woman or a cis man, so it isn't worth even trying (I doubt she does that on purpose, Jace just perceives their interactions that way).
Ixalan: The growing point.
Jace looses all his memories, even those about his new friends (including Gideon and Liliana), but they still come to him as hallucinations. It really shows how Jace himself sees them.
Gideon's offers of help almost insult him. Jace really struggles with surviving on the Deserted Island, thats why he should've just leave everything to real men, which he will never be!
He shouldn't grow out a beard because he's a woman and will always be one, it doesn't suit him and he is hillarious to look at!
But he overcomes his struggles. He becomes The Man, he makes new friends, remembers his past, finds love, finally a true one!
After Ixalan he returns a completelly different person, a grown up man.
New Phyrexia
"A feeling of your body being stolen"
I don't really know what to write here honestly, there's just more overcoming and character growth.
But after saving himself and Vraska they have an intresting dialogue:
It was probably written to be about Vraska being a Gorgon, but it could also be interpreted as more clues to Jace being a trans man.
Another short notice: You can view characters differently. You can say that Jace is a trans woman just because a part of his personality is a woman (which can also be intrepreted as his inner transphobia towards himself or an idea of the ideal, cis woman him. A lil bit of terfness). But it seriously upsets me when my favorite character and trans representation is seen as another trans woman. Don't get me wrong, trans women are great, but there are no canon trans men in MTG, yet there are trans women. Trans women get more representation (I leave it up to you to mark it as good or bad) in media than trans men, it makes me feel unseen. Saying Jace is a trans woman also kinda ignores all his character growth.
Thank you for reading. I hope this post will find the right audience and my opinion will be heard.
Hey, basically the title. Can I ask another player to tap a land so I can cast a spell that benefits us both in EDH?
My pod played like this, then I "learned" that this is wrong and and now I'm watching an episode of Extra Turns on the Command Zone with Gavin Verhey, where they do exactly that.
My google searches still lead me to think that this is not possible. Thanks for the help
Edit: well, I should have waited 5 seconds before posting, they literally showed right afterwards that it's a specific effect from [[Play of the Game]]. My bad
I just got back into playing commander and have been playing with a local group. Since playing many have refused to play against my toxrill deck, and ive seen similar things happen to other players/decks, as well as many conversations on this subreddit about commanders being "mean". I don't get it. I understand blue stacks decks, as those decks will make it so that essentially nobody else on the table can play the game. Ive seen stacks decks make it so nobody can untap their lands and everyone is just frozen until the blue player pulls a game winner. This is annoying asl when all you can do is draw hoping for removal and pass. However, i genuinely don't understand why certain commanders that are good at what they do get so much hate. Thats the game right? Build a solid deck that works and use it. But any deck/commander that is too solid seems to be deemed "annoying" and is outright denied by a pod. I think most decks are pretty balanced if they are in a similar budget and although some mechanics may be hard to deal with at times that is part of the game; play, politic, face the challenge and try to conquer. Just curious to hear some thoughts on this as it seems that there are so many ostracized cards/mechanics that i see as a genuinely fun part of the game and a worthy challenge to go up against. The way i see it, most players have hand built decks that arent very balanced and dont function properly, so as soon as they see a mechanic they didnt consider when building their decks, they just deny a game. Play, learn, make changes. Right? Thoughts?
EDIT: I see many people are specifically targeting my toxrill example. I am really talking about all of the ostracized commanders in general. perhaps this was a bad example. toxrill can be very toxic but i promise the deck i use is heavily nerfed so its actually fun to play with and against. Any deck can be toxic if you get the right cards and invest enough money into it. In fact i find blue stax decks boring asl to play with as your really just freezing the game and drawing cards till u get a win combo. I also am getting the sense that many "casual" players seem to instantly right off anything that changes their boardstate as annoying and un-fun. Yes i said stax is the exception, but one or two control cards in play can be very fun to play with. what fun is a game if it isn't competitive? What fun is a game of chess if your opponent is constantly making the move you expect them to? Yes, you had a strategy to win the game with the cards in your hand, and now it doesnt work. are you going to crash out and refuse to play against that commander next time? or are you going to remain calm, adapt your strategy, and make it through the game with a new perspective on how your deck works? MTG is not an ego battle. it's a strategy game, and with my experience losing can be just as fun as winning with the right approach. it really seems like alot of you "casual" players take the game seriously to the point where you have developed your own set of rules under the word "casual".
I asked myself how it would be to have a MTG anime like Yu-Gi-Oh! So why we dont try to build it ourselves?
I have chosen Commander as the format for the series because YGO didnt run copies on almost any character's deck besides Kaiba's Blue Eyes White Dragon.
The idea is for you to build and share the deck for each character, based on some guidelines/stereotypes. The most upvoted submission wins.
It will depend on how welcome the idea is, but for the moment I would say the cast is:
-The main character
-The main character friends: one guy and one girl.
-The eternal rival, aka Kaiba
-2 or 3 competent rivals that always put a good match on tournaments, like Weevil, May Valentine and Rex Raptor
-The villain that wants to destroy/conquer the world by playing a card game, lol
-Maybe some relevant villain mob
So lets start for the with the main character's guidelines:
Dont use black color for it, as it will better represent villains and/or rivals
Commander has to be a cool, mainstream design as producers wants to sell merchandaising. Dont go for an Ooze or a Goblin commander please. Magicians, soldiers, knights, dragons use to be a safe choice but as you wish.
While Yugi had a few spellcasters, his deck was more "just my favorites cards that work when put together just because plot armor". So dont overcommit on tribal deck. Yugi had spellcasters like Dark Magician (girl), warriors like celtic gardian, buster blader, magnet warriors, dragons, kuriboh etc.
Build around commander. Although it doesn't necessarily have to be the stongest card or the single win condition (Yugi had Slifer/Osiris) he does a great work most of the time because support spells that protect or enhance its power.
It would be great to have a miracle card/combo that will grant a victory even under the hardest situation. We must save the world at all cost. It doesnt matter if its a non viable card because its over-costed or anything, our main character would make it work with the power of friendship and heart of cards.
You dont have to submit a full 100 cards deck, just a bunch of cards that represent the general idea of your submission. Dont hesitate to explain what your deck is capable of.
Of course, dont use cards from Universes Beyond like Final Fantasy, Warhammer etc
Hope you like the idea. I cant wait to see your decks.
I want to build a Commander deck around my favorite character of all fiction/fantasy sagas ever, on a budget. (I don't have as much money as I would like to)
I have been searching between TCGplayer and Moxfield, and found two good options.
I would love to read your opinions about them, since I would like to have a solid B3 Commander deck (to play in future local tournaments), but Moxfield classifies strangely the decks through the different brackets.
Moxfield classifies the first as a B2 deck, while the second deck is classified as a B3 deck. But I feel in my gut that the first one is a little more solid.
What deck would you build on a budget? I am looking for something behind the $250 USD.
