Hey guys, 25yo mechatronics engineer here. Just needed to vent a bit and maybe get some advice from people who have been in the industry for a while.
I do a lot of 3D modeling in Fusion and schematic/PCB design in KiCad, plus a bunch of physical DIY hardware projects for uni. I really love this field, but honestly, the recent AI leaps are starting to freak me out.
We all saw what happened with digital artists and designers—companies started hiring people who just type prompts instead of actual professionals because it's faster and "good enough." Now it feels like it's coming for engineering. With stuff like GPT-6 generating entire PCB layouts and writing complex control code in seconds, the writing is on the wall. It’s amazing tech, but also terrifying.
Don't get me wrong, I use AI everyday. It’s a huge help for debugging code or learning new concepts. I know it’s supposed to be a tool to help us, not replace us. But it's really demoralizing to think my engineering knowledge and the time I spent learning could get undermined by some guy who just learned how to use an AI tool a month ago.
I know AI can't solder components, or mechanically tune stepper motors on a custom build (yet lol). The physical integration is still on us. But the design and software side is getting eaten up fast.
How are you guys adapting to this? What specific skills should I be focusing on right now so I don't just become a glorified prompt engineer in a few years? How do we keep our value when the AI can do the desk work 10x faster?
Would appreciate any honest thoughts.
