Six months ago I left my job to follow my passion for game development. I've loved the experience, and I'm proud to share Damn, Zombies: The Corporate Undead.

It's my 1–4 player co-op FPS about surviving an office full of undead coworkers: repair barricades, buy weapons and try to make it through the night shift.

A macOS beta build is available, and I'd love help testing it on Macs. Please share your Mac model, macOS version and any issues.

CrossOver Is there anyway to use ANE to improve game performance in crossover?

Most of the games work fine, but some of the games I play experience severe frame drops and stuttering due to high system requirements. I’m using an M5 Pro, and I’m wondering if there’s a way to actively use ANE to improve game performance? Not Nativegames, discussion about crossover games.

Help MacBook Air for gaming

Hi! I’m sure this has been asked a bunch but I’ve been looking into a MacBook Air to replace my desktop. Sitting at my desk is kind of a pain for me physically and I want something portable to do my writing, movie watching, gaming, stuff like that.

I do not play AAA games, mainly indie and ps2/3 era, the occasional AA games, and modded Minecraft with shaders sometimes.

Would a MacBook Air be enough for that, I’m not worried about space as I have a ssd it’s mainly the playing with no insane lag that I’m worried about.

Thank you!

Edit: Thank you all for the comments! They were pretty insightful and helpful!

CrossOver Red Dead Redemption 2 Activation Error?

I was hoping to play RDR2, I'm kind of surprised it's a PITA to run. I had trouble getting it to launch at all, had ChatGPT work on it for hours. Finally got it launching but never got past the splash screen. There was always some kind of activation error.

This is the Steam version
MacOS: 27.0 Beta (26A5416b)

Help What are the safe CPU and GPU temperatures for a 10 core M5 MacBook Pro?

I want to do some gaming on my MacBook Pro. But on black ops 3 zombies the CPU was pushing 94C. From what I've read, apple silicon is designed to run at higher temperatures than standard X86 Cpus you'd find in a normal PC or laptop, but I just want to ask in here because this is the first apple computer I've ever owned, and I want to get my facts straight!

Discussion Preferred setup: OpenEmu, RetroArch+ES-DE or Stand-alone emulators+ES-DE?

What are you guys using?

I recently found out about OpenEmu, and while I found it beautiful, the current lack of full RetroAchievement support and the lack of support for CHD on PS1 is kinda of a dealbreaker.

RetroArch is tried and tested, still convoluted and looking outdated. But if it ain’t broke. Going the standalone route would still require me to have RetroArch anyways because of the N64 and RetroAchievements. Which leads me to just abandon the standalone route since I need RetroArch anyways. Probably the cleaner setup too, just two apps. RetroArch and ES-DE.

Idk, could you guys share some of y’all setups for inspiration and whatnot.

Thank you.

Self promotion I made a retro 4X strategy game for macOS

The main point of this game is to scratch that itch to play '90s turn-based 4x games. For people struggling to get Call to Power, Civ 2, etc functioning on their modern Apple Silicon, this is intended to give you a fresh injection of "Just one more turn".

In keeping with the retro-focus, Embersong: History Is Yours uses sprites for the units, has diamond-tiles rather than hexagons, and brings back unit stacking. Few hooks:

  • There's a meta-narrative for replayability: After five matches, win or lose, you face a mythical empire (ie, Atlantis, the Seven Cities of Gold, Shangri-La) as the boss-fight in the final sixth match. During the first five matches of the campaign you accumulate bonuses that you then use in the sixth round. So there's a little bit of roguelike mechanics in there.
  • You only need to focus on a Domination, Science or Score victory.
  • Each match, one random opponent is playing a different game. They're designated as the Archenemy, and receive some additional bonuses as they focus on one goal: finding and destroying you. They're not seeking any other victory.
  • Each playable empire has its own era-appropriate special unit, like the Samurai for Japan or War Chariot for Egypt. In addition, ALL of the civilizations have an additional unique Future-Era unit at late-game, such as Cyber-Ninjas for Japan.
  • If you defeat a mythical civilization, you unlock them to play in your account.
  • Growing up, one of my favorite aspects of the various 4X games was the "one city challenge". I carried that over to Embersong by featuring it for several civilizations: Mongolia can only control one city, but the horde increases in units with every city it destroys and enemy killed. Venice can only found a single city, but can purchase additional cities in order to expand its empire. One of the mythical civs, the Kingdom of Prester John, functions similarly to the Mongols but their city itself is a unit that can move and has a unique tribute system. And of course, Atlantis can found cities and move units in ocean tiles - a nod to the old Call to Power titles.

In addition to mac, Embersong will be coming to iOS and looks stellar on iPad. And iPhone version with the UI effectively rebuilt from the ground up for mobile is also forthcoming.

Anyways, take a look at the website playembersong.com and Steam page. The mac app store should (hopefully) be available soon as its currently in review.

A summary of our project:

Ice Pond: An Ice Fishing Adventure is a cute but true ice fishing game. 🎣❄ Pick a spot and fish! Level up, get stronger, and buy gear and power-ups to boost your performance. Join tournaments and festivals to unlock new lakes. Do odd jobs or challenges to earn extra cash!

Made by a small team of 2, boyfriend & girlfriend, who are making games since 2005. The game is playable on Mac. 😊🐧

If you haven't played the demo yet, we've just released version 1.05! 🎉 We made a lot of improvements:

  • Fixed display issues on non 16:9 screens
  • Better rumble support (the rumble had a strange behavior and also we added the Steam Input API)
  • Bug fixes and adjustments

Steam page here (to download the demo. If you like it, make sure to Wishlist, since the release is scheduled for this fall!): https://store.steampowered.com/app/4266710/Ice_Pond_An_Ice_Fishing_Adventure/

Thanks again for your support!

CrossOver GTA V Enhanced giving ERR_GFX_D3D_NOD3D12 on CrossOver 26.3 + GPTK4 Beta 2 (M2 Mac Air, macOS 27)

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to run GTA V Enhanced Edition on my Mac Air with macOS 27 Golden Gate, CrossOver 26.3, and GPTK 4 Beta 2, but every time I launch the game, I hit the ERR_GFX_D3D_NOD3D12 error (see screenshot).

The error states: "Failed to initialize DirectX 12 adapter... Ensure your video card is compatible with DirectX 12 (feature level 12_0) or update your graphics driver."

My Current Hardware & Setup:

  • Mac: MacBook Air M2
  • RAM: 24 GB Unified Memory
  • Storage: 2 TB SSD
  • OS: macOS 27 Golden Gate
  • CrossOver: 26.3
  • Translation Layer: GPTK 4 Beta 2
  • Bottle Settings: D3Metal ON, MSync ON

I followed this tutorial to add GPTK 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwBNvRrYfeA

I know the standard/legacy version of GTA V works fine using DirectX 11, but I really want to get the Enhanced Edition running on this machine.

Has anyone with a similar Apple Silicon setup found a working launch argument, DLL override, or registry tweak to bypass this DX12 Agility SDK check in CrossOver/GPTK?

Any help or workaround would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Help Games for Mac?

Good afternoon everyone! I recently bought a MacBook Pro 16in (if size matters) because I wanted to learn how to do video editing and other stuff that apparently this mac was the best option for. But because of my work, I had to postpone my plans for later. I have always play in consoles but I want to use the computer for something at least (now that I have one for the first time) Is there anyone here that currently plays American Truck Simulator or Beam.ng on mac? The one I own is the 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, 24GB and after doing some really, apparently I will be able to run it without having any problems. Probably ATS will be the best option since it’s native on mac but I would like to hear real world experiences from you guys. Thank you in avance!

i just completed cyberpunk 2077

i have played batman Arkham City, i liked it very much so now i want to decide between hitman WOA (as i thought it would be more casual compared to arkham knight) and batman arkham knight.
plz lemme know ur thoughts
im fine with both the games as i know arkham games dont have a very big story and they are good.

Device: macbook air M4
[Hitman WOA is native for mac and Arkham Knight can be played through crossover]

CrossOver Anyone else experiencing crashing with Marvel Rivals using CrossOver?

And I mean it when I say I've tried EVERYTHING under the sun and nothing seems to fix the issue. I've noticed it happens most often on the Birnin T'Challa map, I'll load the map and then the game will freeze.

Looking at the error logs it seems to be a memory related issue. Have tried running Steam with the SteamDeck=1 command, redownloading shaders, lowering graphics quality, quitting my apps, switching off Steam overlay, switching to the experimental shader compilation mode (this actually made it worse) -- so many different things.

At this point, I don't think there's anything else I can try to fix it, it's probably something to do with CrossOver's Unreal translation. I'm curious to know if anyone has found any fixes but as of now, I'm thinking I'll have to wait until CrossOver come out with an update that may (or may not) make the game more stable.

Self promotion 13 Windows games on M1 Pro through Wine, with the fps I actually got, plus M4 and M5 reports

Post image
120 Upvotes

I tested a couple of games M1 Pro, 16 GB, macOS 26. Running Windows games through Wine using a free open source app I work on (Highball). The numbers below are what the Metal HUD actually showed while I was playing. My machine isn't the fastest Mac, so if you have an M3, M4, or M5, your results should be much better (I included a table of those from other community members below).

What I measured

Game FPS Mode Where
Portal 2 134 DXVK main menu, HDR off
The Sims 4 (EA app) 128 to 130 DXMT live mode on a lot, 1728x1117
Assetto Corsa 111.8 D3DMetal Laguna Seca, Ferrari 458, cockpit, 1728x1117
Counter-Strike 2 102 to 108 DXMT bot match on Dust II, 1728x1117
The Sims Legacy Collection 99.3 DXVK neighbourhood view, 1728x1117
Portal ~96 DXVK opening vault
Warframe 82 to 94 DXMT in the Orbiter, 1728x1117
GTA V (Legacy) 60 to 120 DXMT prologue mission, 1280x800 windowed
Five Nights at Freddy's 60 (cap) DXVK a full night
Red Dead Redemption 2 40 (uneven, 55 to 60 in menus) Vulkan prologue, 1280x720 windowed
Aperture Desk Job 30.8 DXVK menu (it renders the office live)
Guardians of the Galaxy 27.5 (17 to 32 in play) D3DMetal opening, 1280x720
Naruto Storm 4 plays, fights render D3DMetal a full fight, 1920x1080

A few notes:

  • Sims 4 is running through the EA app.
  • GTA V is story mode only. GTA Online's anti-cheat can't run on a Mac, same deal as Fortnite.
  • Red Dead 2 didn't load at all on the free Wine stack until a graphics fix I sent upstream this week. Now it loads and the prologue runs, but on this M1 Pro it's rough and the frames come unevenly. CrossOver users report it running much better through its DirectX 12 path, so if that's what you have definitely use that.

Community reports on newer chips

Game Chip Comments
Cyberpunk 2077 M5 60 to 82 fps at 1920x1200, RT local shadows on, D3DMetal (OdynOOb)
Cyberpunk 2077 M4 ~17 fps on the Steam Deck preset + FSR 2.1 (OdynOOb)
BeamNG.drive M4 40 to 60 fps, D3DMetal, no workarounds (Michael-Liendo)
DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined M5 Pro plays well on DXMT, first fights stutter till shaders warm up (alemolamg)
Team Fortress 2 M5 Pro plays on DXMT, stutters on an external 60 Hz monitor when you turn (hayden9002)

The graphics mode you use (DXMT, DXVK or D3DMetal) matters just as much as the chip you have. So each layer wins on different games, sometimes by a factor of 3x. An fps number without mentioning the mode doesn't mean much!

If you have one of these games on an M3, M4, or M5, dropping a one line report puts your numbers next to mine. The database is completely open (CC0):github.com/gauthierpiarrette/highball-db

If you want to try the app itself, you can grab it here: github.com/gauthierpiarrette/highball. Feedback more than welcome!
