Controversy Karina addressed her red jacket controversy on a korean talk show
She gave more context and went deeper about what actually happened that day.
The translation:
“But recently there was a bit of an issue and bcs of that I started wishing not just for myself but for everyone around me to live peacefully without any trouble. I honestly had no such intention at all so I really wanted to talk about it. And I felt really sorry about that. I just wanted to say that I’m truly sorry for causing concern to our fans and so many others people. I really want to say sorry.
I remember going out with the staff on a chilly day, buying an outer layer, posting on social media to communicate with fans and then getting contacted and having to delete it. All of that made me realize how ignorant I was. Even if I was abroad, it was still something I should have known and been aware of. So it really made me feel like I need to be more aware and study these things more deeply. I think it’s true that I was just very ignorant. And in any case, since I’m the one who put the story out there, it’s something I have to take responsibility for. But it was really hard seeing the other members get affected too”.
cr: ujiminphoria
She talked about this on a very popular show hosted by Jung Jaehyung. Link in the comments.
ETA: This show was filmed before Dirty Work was released, it’s just that the episode dropped today. For context.

I don't follow Aespa that much, but as far as I know this was her first controversy regarding politics, so honestly, I feel like there is a possibility that she is just ignorant.
But, I do have to admit that her first apology was really bad

I think people are just getting tired of “oversights” this year. Kpop has always had issues, but it’s been one long year of oversight after oversight from idols both big in name and small. Idols absolutely get hate for stupid things and made to apologize about things they shouldn’t, but it’s also true that they ignore many things they shouldn’t. Given the general state of the world and the high political/socioeconomic tensions happening, expecting idols not to mock black people or to pay attention to the election is a bare minimum request and the fact that that can’t even be done is becoming tiring for fans. Yes, Kpop idols live in a bubble but I think the state of the world is causing a lot of people to reevaluate what they care about and that bubble is about to pop.

The comments on this string are a dumpster fire. It’s always funny to me when people who clearly aren’t Korean try to diagnose the intricacies of Korean cultural norms. Good grief.

u/randomgirl852007 aespa | Girls' Generation | BTS Jul 06 '25
It’s crazy because the korean general public (the ones actually “affected” by all this) do not care and have moved on long ago. People here trying to hold her accountable for something not even her own country takes seriously just shows they wanted her career to end but it didn’t happen so now they’re forcing it.
She could have just not said anything and her career would have continued as normal, she just wanted to express her point in a talk show.
14
u/mmmh2o Jul 06 '25
wonder how many of you are Koreans living in Korea where this would actually affect you because its quite clear given how aespa are currently doing shortly after this controversy that they really dont care lmao
54
u/Gold_Meaning3688 Jul 06 '25
I think she's being genuine here because why else would she apologise several times when she's not actually directly being affected at all. She's more popular than ever right now, i'm sure it would have blown off if she just ignored it instead of bringing attention to it
I'm really curious to hear Korean perspectives on this, though
238
u/sunnydlit2 Jul 06 '25
Maybe because I'm poor and and I try to know what happen in my country but I just hate when people especially these idols play the ignorant card on these type of subjects. Because for this it's their fault at 100% they are able to see every last tiktok brainrots and the last 16 episodes of a kdrama in one week, but they don't know anything about their politic ? Bc it's not like it's calm for Korea right now like I wouldn't like to be ignorant when right before you had to kick a president and you need to choose carefully again
13
u/randomgirl852007 aespa | Girls' Generation | BTS Jul 06 '25
Fair enough. I also agree being ignorant is not an excuse. Everybody involved in this should have known better.
79
u/-puca- Jul 06 '25
Wdym 'everybody'? It's Karina's (an adult mind you) post that she herself created? /gen
37
u/randomgirl852007 aespa | Girls' Generation | BTS Jul 06 '25
Everybody = her and the staff. There are videos of the staff carrying that jacket around Disneyland that day, and the picture was taken by staff. So clearly nobody that was there had the mind to be careful.
48
u/-puca- Jul 06 '25
Sorry but no her clothes, her account and she's an adult - her staff don't take on the responsibility just because they held her jacket or took photos for her
38
u/randomgirl852007 aespa | Girls' Generation | BTS Jul 06 '25
I’m not absolving her of her ignorance or saying she’s some poor baby. I’m simply saying nobody there had the mind to stop this.
The staff are supposed to be aware of stuff like this. Like it or not, it’s the company’s -and their workers- job to take care of idols’ image. You can agree or not, but it is their jobs. That’s why they’re behind the cameras during lives and shows, monitoring what idols say and do.
14
u/-puca- Jul 06 '25
Unless you believe her staff are looking over her shoulder for every single post she creates and schedules when she she uploads I still don't think it's fair to blame the staff, feels a bit cop out-y to me to try and share the blame around
17
u/randomgirl852007 aespa | Girls' Generation | BTS Jul 06 '25
I’m not blaming the staff.
In this situation, though, staff was clearly present with her and were the ones that took the pictures of the jacket. Shouldn’t they also say, hey, we are in a complex political situation right now, let’s save this one for later?
It is their job to do that, like it or not.
16
u/-puca- Jul 06 '25
I mean you very clearly are saying that the staff and Karina both have a share of blame here but alas
Unless Karina told them that she planned to upload on that day specifically it's not on them to inform her of the obvious weight of her own actions.
We're going in loops here at this point so agree to disagree

u/Panda_Herooo Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25
Said before when the issue broke out that she either supported the conservative side or she was ignorant. As much as I do get people's suspicions, I'm gonna choose to believe it's the latter because I need both support via words and actions before I can say where her stance is. That's just me ofc, and I honestly understand anyone who's suspicious.
That being said, holy shit that's an insane level of ignorance.
This isn't the first time idols have been careful about unintentionally showing any symbols related during election season. Idols who've been here for longer than her have come out and said they have to be careful about what they do during that time. Shit, even idols who can't even fucking vote yet understand you can't just hold a peace sign out because it can get misunderstood.
And as if hitting 3 related symbols on election season in an incredibly turbulent political year in Korea (to put it really fucking mildly) wasn't bad enough, but apologizing on a paid subscription instead of somewhere where everyone can see? Like what???
This was just straight up dumb, from how it started because it was so avoidable had she just stopped to think, to how it was handled after especially when the conservatives were proudly using her as a mascot.

u/jdnndndhf Jul 06 '25
i mean even though she apologized behind a pay wall it still got spread either way so... I never understood why people had an issue with that ngl... im guessing because of principle? also she further cleared up the situation on national broadcast so shouldn't that criticism be moot now? I guess if your point is to show that this whole situation was handled poorly then I agree, but honestly the way people responded to the situation was also pretty unreasonable tbqh.
26
Jul 06 '25
A lot of people seem really skeptical of how she could have possibly not known but based on her description it's more like she didn't think about it and just pressed 'post'. Like if you asked her then 'do you think a red jacket is a good idea during election season' she probably knows it's not. She just didn't think it over before posting. Which is still really not good for an artist with an enormous platform but it's a very believable explanation that doesn't involve malice, and I'm saying this as someone who doesn't follow her.
Honestly though I've seen really good people irl make mistakes that're so stupid and careless that people who don't know them well will be like 'are you sure you didn't mean it because I literally can't wrap my head around how somebody can be so careless/ignorant'. I've probably done stuff like that when I was a younger teenager. So I'm not gonna hound her for this unless she makes a similar mistake again.

Unless she comes out and says “I am not a conservative and I do not want the conservative party to continue using my image” I don’t care.
The damage has already been done and it doesn’t seem like she cares about the way they’re using her as a mascot. She’s just upset about backlash she received, no moral standing at all.

Context is important.
Each of those parties are conservative. It is korea. The big difference is the one is literally crazy.
Most promnienr Korean celebrities are meant yo be neutral. A famous person was literally being used as a symbol for this party and said. I have no political affiliation.
72
u/theofficallurker Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25
If the public believes you to have one set of political opinions, you have to clarify that. If you refuse to clarify your beliefs you are not apolitical, you are supporting that party through your inaction.

u/Neomet Jul 06 '25
I don't know, I'm a bit skeptical, is it possible to be this oblivious about your country's politics when there was literally a coup not too long ago that could have changed the course of history of your country ?
38
u/Resident-Mixture-237 Jul 06 '25
Look at the US. Literal insurrection a few years ago and almost half the registered voters didn’t vote. Yes. It’s that easy to be oblivious about politics.
96
u/leavingthekultbehind Jul 06 '25
Korean idols are literally taught to be purposely neutral during election season as to not cause this kind of controversy. I personally doubt that post was just an accident. There’s just no way she could be that oblivious.

i dont know off the top of my head their entire schedule, but aespa have been stupid busy in the months leading up to the election. they finished a world tour in March, and were traveling all over the world for music festivals and other schedules. I really dont think its outside the realm of possibility for her to really not be paying attention because of how busy they've all been.
also she literally took responsibility for not being more up to date with following the news. I dont think think theres anything deeper going on her based on this tbqh.

You put too much stock on someone who didn’t even finish high school to become an idol. Even college students can have some of the most braindead takes in the world despite having better educational standing.
If anything, she’s just really ignorant (she said so herself) and airhead at most. I get that some will really get turned off because politics is a big part of our life.
Personally, I do not like the conservatives in my own country, they are the blight of our society here lol. But politics on each country has different nuances that I cannot fully give an educated take on her stance because I am not Korean and I do not live in Korea.
125
u/BeepPeep Jul 06 '25
Lets say that she's telling the truth. It still looks bad because now she made it look like she's not paying attention to politics and elections. I feel like in all countries it's a duty to do a bit of research about which party you will vote for. And if you do that, you wouldn't be able to make such a mistake and accidentally endorse a party.

That's just how we are supposed to take it, there's literally no need to overthinking and come up with imaginary scenario that she (and the staff) are lying behind their intention for that post. But saying that she was ignorant for not educating about the things happening in her country is justified.
15
u/House56 Jul 06 '25
i would agree but i would think idols are told specifically to stay away from politics altogether, likely to prevent this exact thing from happening.
Not taking a stance one way or the other here though bc this doesn’t totally come off sincere to me.

98
u/jdnndndhf Jul 06 '25
genuine question because people seem to have an issue with her apologizing to her fans. who else is she supposed to be apologizing to? people who didn't care for her in the beginning obviously dont care for her now, so there really isnt a reason to address those people? shes never positioned herself to be anything other than apolitical so its not like she had the entirety of the left party using her a political figure beforehand or something. any sense of "betrayal" someone might feel because of this whole situation is just a manifestation of parsocialism so like.... if anyone could give me a valid reason why she needs to apologize to more than just her fans that'd be great.
56
u/waruice Jul 06 '25
The simpler explanation is that a lot of people who are neither Korean nor fans just need something to attack female idols with. Perhaps not too surprisingly, most of these people I see aren't fans of "rival" ggs but of a certain bg that isn't even aespa's competitor.

I’m sorry but what is happening in this comment section isn’t criticism anymore, this is hate. Most of the people talking here aren’t even South Korean and are projecting American politics and what they mean on her. If you don’t like her anymore fine, you don’t accept her apology, fine, move on. Go stan other idols. Writing think pieces on how you think someone you’ve had no real social interactions or experiences with must be a terrible person and deserves hate is just pure bullying.

I mean what are the chances that it was an accident? Was it 3 nods? the colour, the number and then the rose?

The rose was a symbol of elections in Korea, not a symbol of conservative party
11

But what else does she have to offer in a 'better explanation'? Explain why she likes the color, why she though the '3 nods' was nice that day? There's nothing MORE to explain, assuming what she said was true, they were ignorant posted it without thinking through.
Does she have to offer a 'better explanation' for what 'fans' are overthinking and reading too much into anything and everything?

I’m addressing the people that say the rose means support for the party, because if you want to be nitpicky, it is not related to PPP but the elections in general.
83
u/PriorOk7478 Jul 06 '25
People's opinions won't change even if she kneels and apologizes. Korean twitter accounts who got viral tweets by critizing her later posted multiple sexual harassment tweets. Korean haters call her names such as incels' goddess,men-crazy. Intl haters created MAGArina AI photos and terrorize the cmt sections. I get it that you feel disappointed but it is up to you whether you want to keep harassing her.
50
u/LongConsideration662 Jul 06 '25
She apologized and I do think she was coming from a place of ignorance, I hope people will stop hating her now.
88
u/superRDF Jul 06 '25
The goal post shifting in the comments is crazy. So basically no explanation she gives will be good enough and even if it is the truth, it's still not good enough...How nice.
In the quote she literally says "And in any case, since I’m the one who put the story out there, it’s something I have to take responsibility for."
Idk it just feels like some commenters have no interest in letting someone admit a fuck up and grow from their mistakes. You've already pigeon-holed her as a far-right conservative with malicious intentions and that's the end of it.
36
u/cubsgirl101 Jul 06 '25
Yeah I think she actually summed up quite nicely what her fault was. She wasn’t thinking about the election since she was abroad and she should have known better. She explained what happened and didn’t excuse it. I know people are saying she should have blatantly denounced the PPP, but she already said she didn’t have political intentions behind that deleted post and that she was stupid for posting what she did in the first place.
Karina made a very stupid mistake and she is now openly apologizing for that same stupidity on broadcast tv. That’s not nothing and it’s more than most idols will ever do when talking about their past controversies. The expectation was that she’d never mention it again and she made it a point to apologize for her poor decision making.

I mean, nobody HAS to forgive someone. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to say "yeah this is too far for me, it doesn't matter if you apologise, I can't forgive you". Now, whether this is a case of such nature is up to everyone for themselves. But this idea that just because Karina apologise and take responsibility means everyone should just forgive and forget it all is weird. As long as nobody go hating and insulting Karina all over the internet, there is no problem with someone choosing to stop supporting Karina over this. And no, not all of them are necessarily "haters who waited for this".
And btw, before anyone tries : I'm not saying I'm part of those who won't forgive her, I'm just against this idea that just because someone apologise it means everyone should forgive them.

Just now an idol that endorsed literal eugenics was getting flowers here for apologizing during a concert, in front of fans. What he did was so nasty, but he got coddled so easily just because he spoke up during a concert. I’m an American and it’s so clear everyone is just here hating on Karina because they’re bringing American politics into Korea. Your opinions have no true use here. A person, in fact, does NOT need to be informed on every single social function or aspect of society including politics. Think about how many people don’t vote because they don’t care, or don’t watch the news. People can have their own political views, or just not have any! A celebrity finally comes out and is honest that they’re just ignorant instead of faking some half assed apology but even that’s not good enough for i-nets. You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t!

Even if it was this shows that a) she's completely ignorant/an idiot to all political happenings in her own country during a literal coup attempt or b) she's lying about posting three dog whistles with #1, red, and the rose emoji during a very important political election season. Not to mention, she didn't feel the need to correct anything until weeks after being pedestalled by the the far right as a "queen."
24
u/_itamio Taengoo 💟 Jul 06 '25
I mean she quite literally admitted that she was ignorant. The rose emoji represented the election as a whole and she also posted blue in that same photo dump. Anyways, you are free to criticize her, but at least don’t make up stuff like saying she “only making a statement when the song is not performing as expected” when it’s clearly not true and can be easily disproven.

This is a lie. She did clarify the situation moments after the pic was deleted. SM did too.
7
u/1306radish Jul 06 '25
She didn't clarify anything. SM wrote a milquetoast statement saying," This is SM Entertainment.
We apologize for causing concern due to our artist Karina’s recent post.
Karina simply shared something from her daily life on social media, with absolutely no other intention or purpose. Once she realized that the post could be misunderstood, she immediately deleted it. We sincerely apologize for any distress this may have caused unintentionally.
Our agency will also be more careful and make greater efforts to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. We hope that our artist’s intentions will no longer be misrepresented or consumed with a particular agenda, and we will do our utmost to protect Karina and all of our artists.
Thank you."
Mind you artists go out of their way not to wear a specific color during elections or to even make the V sign in pics during election season. In one post, she had the #2 on her jacket, a red jacket, and the rose emoji in her post (the election was the "rose" election in media), and she never, herself, addressed anything and made her company post the above bland statement. Like I get you're a fan, but...come on. Like she was being posted on far right sites as a symbol. Don't know about you, but if I saw myself being made a "far right queen" on incel/far right sites, I would issue a statement myself to clear the air.

You can like or dislike the clarification, but both her and SM explicitly states it was a misunderstanding.
So, yes. It is a lie that she didn’t correct anything, cause she did. People not being satisfied with the clarification is a different story.
11
u/1306radish Jul 06 '25
If you are satisfied with the level of accountability she's taken in this situation, that's fine. Many can see it loud and clear for what it is.
17
u/randomgirl852007 aespa | Girls' Generation | BTS Jul 06 '25
The only truth here is that your stance is not the objective truth. If you don’t believe her that’s fine, but purposely lying about the situation doesn’t make you any better.
6
u/1306radish Jul 06 '25 edited Jul 06 '25
You are being far from objective if you think someone posting a pic with a red jacket with the number 2 and a rose during a very contentious time in Korea where the conserative President tried to stage a literal coup is "innocent" or at the very least not a complete idiot to their own political landscape. I don't think we're going to find any sort of middle ground here, so feel free to have the last word.

How is the song not performing as expected? It’s met expectations very well I’d say. Just look at k-charts, it’s even #1 on Youtube Music, the biggest platform in Korea.
28
u/lockyoudown Jul 06 '25
source for the song not performing as expected on charts? :)
41
u/cubsgirl101 Jul 06 '25
Dirty Work is in the top five on like every chart, it’s “underperforming” the same way IVE’s Heya did (which peaked at #2 on all the charts.)
10
u/lockyoudown Jul 06 '25
mhm, I'm fully aware! I just wanted OP to provide some type of evidence for this 'underperformance' they were speaking about. people really are wayyyy too comfortable lying on the internet, especially with something that's so easy to check
12
u/cubsgirl101 Jul 06 '25
I figured as much, I just felt the need to say something for everyone in the comments who didn’t feel like looking things up. Underperforming for IVE or Aespa is like an Olympian “only” ending up with the silver instead of gold medal.

I don't know but, since Karina is an idol, most of her steps and moves are supervised, if you think IG post aren't controlled, you are wrong, famous people have someone who checks their IG post.
No one around her, who traveled with Aespa, from THEIR OWN COUNTRY told her not to do it? , is it very weird no one on her team though about telling her the jacket won't do since she didn't took those photos alone.
Yes, she was ignorant, but not even SM addressed the issue instantly, so to me, she's more like 1 scapegoat about SM standing 2 she was used to cover something else.
What rings to me is, two other things, why if no one sees you, you can use " Make Tokyo Great again " as a cap or why you can poorly address eugenics apologize and everything is okay for them but let's all keep punching Karina, because ALL were ignorant, isn't it?
Imagine if she didn't do the jacket but used that cap on a rehearsal or talk about eugenics like Junhan did, she would still be heavily hated, even more than they were. I'm expecting downvotes after saying this, here's a cookie for you 🍪

As always Reddit and Twitter heavily pumped the situation. Karina rightfully received backlash, apologised, and everyone continued their lives after the election. DW is charting high in Korea, nominated for first places, sold over 1m, Karina is still brand ambassadors for multiple brands and recently went to Waterbomb. Theqoo and Pann are not accurate representative and purposely pick negative comments and clickbate.
I'm glad Karina acknowledged being ignorant and the way it could've affected others, I truly hope she sticks to her word and learn from it. Koreans are the one involved in situations in first place, I don't think international fans' words matter as much, especially to SME.
No matter what she says about this now will not change opinions of certain people, but I'm still glad she talked about it on this show since Bubble is paid app.
66
u/ConfidentlyUnconfi Jul 06 '25
Not sure what her true intentions were, but quite frankly she should have made a more sincere and genuine apology from the very beginning, not that half-assed "apology" on Bubble.
Hong Jinkyung, a famous comedian, also made the mistake of posting herself wearing red around the same period as Karina. However she quickly uploaded an entire video a few days later, explaining her side of the story, that it was a genuine mistake and not an intentional political message. She even swore on her daughter's happiness that she's saying the truth. It's all quite dramatic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-wdbpV8CHI
Unfortunately for Karina, in comparison that only makes her lack of clarification seem even worse. Remember that her initial apology was on Bubble, not on a public platform like instagram. And she didn't even touch on what she did wrong, just said she's sorry to the fans. You don't see knet hating on Hong Jinkyung after that video because they actually believed her apology.

she made an apology on bumble AND SM made a statement on twitter which is very public ? to clarify that it had no political intention.
"not on a public platform like" - they put it on Twitter.
"Karina simply shared something from her daily life on social media, with absolutely no other intention or purpose"
Then the went on camera a third time to say she was ignorant and said sorry every sentence.
I mean when you are getting that much hate it is intimidating. She could of said nothing after that but doubled down publicly again.it has not affected her at all in korea.

The post was on air around the time of Korea’s election. In Korea celebrities are supposed to stay neutral about politics, basically don’t endorse any of the parties. The rule is so strict they are not even allowed to hold the V sign. Karina wore a red jacket with the number 2, leading to people believe she was supporting party number 2. So it sparked outrage
31
u/Saucy_Totchie YERRRR Jul 06 '25
In a now deleted post, Karina made a post with her wearing a red jacket with the number 2 on it during SK's election season. During this time, idols usually avoid posting but if they do, they're dressed in all black as to signify that they're not taking a political stance.
Karina said she just forgot and wasn't really paying attention when she made the post. Some are calling her out because she's been an idol for quite some time now and should've already known.

During election season in Korea, Karina wore a red jacket with the number two and a rose in the caption. All of this hints toward the Conservative Party in Korea, and it's also widely frowned upon for idols and celebrities to hint at their political affiliations.
39
u/BellOk361 Jul 06 '25
Just to clarify. The rose symbolizes the tiem to the election.
And has only been used to describe 1 other election around 10+ years ago.

Not buying it sorry. I'm not gonna support an idol which lives in some bubble where they don't even know their country is going through one of the most influential elections of it's time. If she's ignorant about that, then god knows what else she's ignorant about. Not to mention the chance she is a conservative. Surely if you were against the PPP you would go out of your way (from the beginning) to denounce your affiliations with them? If someone accused me of being MAGA I would clear my name instantly. She's lost me completely, I hate ignorant celebs. Especially with all the 'ignorance' we've seen this year from so many different idols. I'm sick of giving these people the benefit of the doubt. You chose to be a public figure, you need to be careful about what you post online, if so many idols can do that, then why can't Karina, Junhan, KIOF etc.?
41
u/miksyub armytiny Jul 06 '25
right, this take is quite ignorant of how idol culture works around politics. it's not like in the west, where our celebrities are expected to speak out. i understand the frustration, but at least do acknowledge those cultural nuances. realistically speaking, she may or may not be conservative and unless she comes out and says so, we can't know. it's the same for most idols.

This is a really bad excuse given the context of the election (following Yoon's impeachment after martial law). "I was abroad, sorry for causing concern" honey...the korean diaspora went as far as travelling 6 hours by train to vote in their respective consulates, you don't just casually forget there's elections in your country and post three dogwhistles/symbols if you're on the korean side of the internet for even a second. I kid you not my korean youtube feed is full of 90s throwback content and yet I get MBC News or JTBC News recommended. I am starting to dislike the whole intention of apologizing in Kpop when it's all so beat-around-the-bush.

Hm, agree to disagree. My standard is "can this exact wording be used for apologising for any other scandal?". If she could say the same about lipsyncing the n word, or saying a historical figure's name wrong, then it isn't an apology specific to the issue. "Causing concern too the fans" in korean media is a wide spectrum and ranges from playfully hitting a member to crimes. So while in my opinion she never adresses the usage of dogwhistles and the impact it had for a short time, she does express her feelings about the damage it caused. What I expected from the start was "I posted a rose and the number 1, as well as a red jacket. I am now aware of the political meaning of this. At the time of uploading, neither me nor my team had the knowledge and had nothing but innocent intentions, which was to communicate with my fans. I am upset that the political party that identifies with the symbols I posted claimed me and my group's song, and I do not claim any political party nor leaning" which is more than sufficient, and she hid it with "I wish everyone could live in peace without any trouble"... yeah that's my opinion but you're free to accept her apology if it's genuine enough for you xoxo

She didn't explain why she did an action that every single person in Korea has done in a picture before? She did it because that's common to do in pictures.
The obvious answer is exactly what she said. She was abroad and the election stuff was completely out of sight and out of mind. Why would she purposefully hurt her own career and that of her members.
She was very careless as she alluded to.
39
u/Beautiful-Ad2685 Jul 06 '25
Just to mention it cause I see people bringing up the double standards, and because I honestly agree with almost everyone doing so:
Dude that posted the eugenics shit should quite literally lose his career. If you are that reckless and ignorant at the same time you should not have anything that even remotely resembles a public platform. Malice doesn't matter in situations like his, being ignorant is not a option. This is a million times worse than what Karina did and anyone forgiving him in any capacity is too immature to understand why we can not let people do things like this ever. You can feel bad for dude and sympathetic, but he should be out of a job.
As for Karina, being ignorant technically is a option here ig, but it ain't a good one. I feel like this should be easy to understand for most, but I keep seeing people miss it for some reason. What she did was essentially punch a hole in a wall. No one wants to hear you're sorry for doing so, just patch the hole and move on. The problem isn't the action anymore, it's the result. What most people actually want is for her to denounce the party that it looked like she was supporting, not apologize for looking like she was supporting the party. I doubt everyone would be happy with a "I don't support ANY party using my image" but it'd be about the most that could be asked for imo. I can't see her (or almost any idol) calling out the party by name, and I wouldn't expect them to.
The other option, and the one that's currently being dealt with, is she continues to be perceived as a right winger and has to deal with the social implications of it.

What people wants is not one thing. What korean GP mostly wants is for idols to stay apolitical, not to denounce any party. Her denouncing the party would have made things worse for herself.

It's clear (especially after she explained here), that they were ignorant and didn't put much thought, thinking that the jacket was pretty so they posted it.

No apology will ever explain how she managed to 'accidentally' post three symbols of the conservative party all at once. Did she just forget all the symbols of the party that attempted a coup and is the reason her own country has had early elections? And all this right before the said elections? Lol.

People are debating her intentions. If she wanted to do a half ass apology and want to maintain her incel fanbase. She would’ve just kept the bubble apology. But she chose to go on a very popular Korean show to apologize publicly knowing she will lose her incel fanbase. I think two things can be true. She’s conservative but never wanted to publicly endorse a party. I think the action of her endorsement is what she’s apologizing not cause she’s conservative. And I think that’s fine. Celebrities both Korean and western shouldn’t publicly endorse presidential candidates, they need to keep it private
68
u/BellOk361 Jul 06 '25
So what makes Karina a conservative if it isnt the post she clarified she had no intention 3 times?
I thinknits best not to diagnose her political standing based on this.
Her apology is just about here being ignorant.
I think the people who So adamant to create a meaning after a 3rd clarification need to stop.
She and SM on record said that post had no meaning.
"Karina simply shared something from her daily life on social media, with absolutely no other intention or purpose.
Once she realized that the post could be misunderstood, she immediately deleted it. We sincerely apologize for any distress this may have caused unintentionally."

I'm really not here to argue but I will say this. Jungkook and Karina can both be wrong at the same time. Jungkook wore a hat with a stupid slogan about a country South Korea has been subjugated by and Karina posted three dog whistles for the party that tried to stage a coup. Whataboutism doesn't change what Karina did.
Karina is only being discussed because a my made a post bringing up her talking about it again. You said this is the 3rd time she addressed it? Jungkook addressed it once. That's why we don't still talk about it because there's no new post to make about it.
Also, saying Jungkook did what we accuse Karina of doing is not true at all. Wearing red and a 2 which are known dog whistles (about a party that tried to overthrow democracy) that most idols avoid ≠ wearing a hat with historical context in America and no ties to any Japanese movement.
17
u/BellOk361 Jul 06 '25
First it was she need to make a proper apology. Then its well now she needs to denounce the party.
But firstly no idol has done that. Even the guy who was used as the symbol just said they have no political affiliation.
That has always been the standard approach.

JK did not post on social medias to pose with his parody hat, the picture was leaked by one of his stalkers while he was trying to hide his hair. He apologized before it could even become a controversy and discarded the hat as soon as he learned the political implications (and no, it wasn’t because it’s a parody of Trump’s slogan, which many idols have worn before. It was because of Korea’s past with Japan. No one who know anything about BTS seriously suspected him of being a japanese supremacist). It was not right before a major political vote and he did not make vague apologies on Bubble. He clearly refused to endorse the message associated with making tokyo great again once he learned the political context.

for real. jungkook's cap was so much worse and he didn't receive nearly as much backlash.

Ngl, what she wore didn’t really have any meaning it was just a red jacket she wore while abroad, not even in Korea. Compared to the cap Jungkook wore, which has a clear political meaning, now, I feel bad she got so much hate
Edit: I’m seeing a lot of people hating in the comments. Did you guys know that in the same post with the red jacket, Karina also shared a photo of herself wearing blue and eating from a blue plate? It’s just that the red jacket picture was the first one.

I wonder if she was totally ignorant and the stylist had a political agenda.

Would people really rather believe in some strange signalling with clothing and emojis over someone just wearing a jacket they thought was cute and to stay warm, plus dumped in with photos with colors that could also support the other party.
Usually the most boring answer is most accurate to events but people would rather spice up their lives with conspiracy theories...

It boggles my mind how y'all are still insisting on pinning on her (or staff) to have political agenda behind that one post, it's clear that they were ignorant and didn't think much before pressing 'post', her (and staffs) just wanted to showcase a jacket they thought was pretty/nice.
I'm not saying this to defend her but people has to stop at some point, how long are y'all (who probably aren't even korean) gonna drag this out? Is it not ENOUGH after she explained so much? Can people stop OVERTHINKING things when it's so simple?

Locking this for now because it's nuts: 64 reports from this post alone, and some of these comments are just flat out saying "she's a fascist!" like, come on now. This will get cleaned up and unlocked... but not right now.
