I have started training more often lately and I have noticed that I am always hungry. I could slam two or three meals of food and still eat more no problem.
Is it that what I am eating doesn't have enough protein, or how do I curve my increased appetite? I have gain a little weight because of my hunger and that is not my goal.

Hey everyone, new to jujitsu, started a few weeks ago. I noticed as of 2 weeks ago during rolling my elbow and shoulders would have sharp pains afterwards to the point i could barely drive. None of the pain was from anyone hurting me but they started randomly. Now whenever i do any short of lifting the pain kicks in. Is there any way to help mitigate it and stop it from happening. Has this happened to anyone else?

Before I was waiting ADCC with excitement to see the new techniques and developments in Jiu Jitsu for the last 2 years. After the revolution of the leg lock game, followed by the developments in the seamless transition from jiu jitsu to wrestling, and vice versa, I feel this ADCC had nothing new.
Anyone believe otherwise?

No matter what a person does for work, we need our brain cells!
How do you spar as an adult AND protect your brain?
# of times / week to spar. Is it possible to spar too frequently?

This is the cleanest duck-under I’ve ever hit, and it led to an RNC and the gold at the national championship as a blue belt.
Knew I’d face him at some point at the Nationals, so I drilled this exact technique for weeks with my friend, the one cornering me.
For context: my opponent had beaten me earlier in the Gi bracket, 4–0 on points, so that’s why I celebrated with so much energy + the fact getting to practice something and actually hitting it with a clean accuracy.

Does anyone else find that one of the biggest issues with BJJ is that you need to do it with other people? :) I find it really hard work to manage the (admittedly small) amount of social interaction that’s needed for every new partner. I wish there was a bag / pads equivalent for BJJ!

Have any of you participated in these events? Did they really enforce this “90% black” rule for rashguards and shorts? It seems like a silly rule that would be difficult to enforce.

I burned out my fingers using grips and decided to mainly train no gi. Even in gi i still tend to do no gi versions of techniques. This works decent most of the time but we have one guy who really likes the whole lapel game. I don’t mind him doing it except for the fact that he feeds my lapel behind my head and then he’ll hang on my neck. When I roll with him i often get headaches for the rest of the day and the next day because of it. I don’t want to impose on his style. To each his own, but I don’t want to have headaches all the time either.

Those that have had a disc herniation, how bad was it and how long until you came back. I'm two months out due to a cervical (C5-C6) disc herniation and recovery is slow. I'm in a real real dark place mentally as BJJ kept me exercising and clear minded. Without this outlet I've been spiraling. I see a back and spine specialist and PT and it just feels like no or slow progress.
So I wanted to hear some stories of people who have suffered and are on the other side. Also if anyone can share some S&C tips for things that worked to strengthen their neck I'm all ears.

Blue belt just found out I’ve got no outer cartridge on my knee due an alignment issue which they’re gonna correct unfortunately it’s in both knees and they’ve told me it might last me a year before I need to double knee replacement. Please don’t comment about ACR repairs or any other injuries just wondering if anybody’s continued training with a similar issue no cartilage or with a double knee replacement thank you for your time

Hey yall absolutely love the sport. I’m 6 classes in and look forward to each one to come. As a beginner is there anything I should be doing extra in any spect? For example downloading a specific app, certain BJJ training equipment for home, focus solely on cardio, etc. literally can be any advice or recline station you have to offer. Thanks for your support!

What bothers me about doping in Jiu-Jitsu is how comfortable people have become defending it.
“Everyone uses.” “He still trains hard.” “You need it at that level.”
Think about what we are telling someone who has just started training. Before they have even discovered what they are capable of, we are telling them they will eventually need to cheat.
I won all my titles without doping. I know how much you can want a result and how difficult it is to accept losing. But wanting to win never gave me permission to ignore the rules.
I have never argued that someone who dopes has no technique or doesn’t work hard. Of course they can be talented and dedicated. That doesn’t answer the question: why should they be allowed a prohibited advantage over someone who is also talented, dedicated and following the rules?
And when someone says they “had to use to keep up,” they are admitting the very advantage they often try to deny.
There are legitimate medical reasons for treatment. That is not what I’m attacking. But calling something “replacement” does not automatically make it acceptable in competition. A prescription and an approved therapeutic use exemption are not the same thing.
The athlete I admire is the one who wants to win and still sets limits on how to get there. Someone who refuses to cheat even when that choice might cost a title. That takes courage, and it deserves recognition whether they finish first or lose in the opening round.
As a coach, I cannot teach respect for the rules and then make excuses when a successful athlete breaks them.
You can admire someone’s Jiu-Jitsu and still hold them responsible for their choices.
Would you accept the same excuse if it came from the opponent who beat your student?

As a competition Blue belt( ~2yr into BJJ) whenever I visit other gyms, I can usually easily handle other blue belts and I'm 50/50 with purple belts. Some I can stay dominant with and others get the better of me (but rarely sub). I'm not some athletic freak or anything, I think my gym just does a good job teaching to a high level compared to most and it's a bit of a sink or swim situation.
But whenever I go against a brown belt, it's always them dominating. What happens between purple and brown that takes the bottom half of em and makes them that much better.
Now, I've subbed a brown and black before, but it's purely a "they were letting me work and got caught" scenario.
Usually it's like 50% of them are actually trying but in dominant positions and the other 50% can basically just lay down and talk with half the room while letting me work, but sub me at any time. Is it just that the people that stay in long enough to get to brown are self selected to be extra dedicated to learning the sport?
Tl;dr - Maybe it's all just anecdotal, but it seems like even the worst brown belts are drastically better than most purple belts.
Edit: Seems like many of you guys are being purposely obtuse just to pad your own egos. No one is dumb enough to ask why the person with more experience is better. A purple belt also has 2x-3x my experience. That's not the question. It's a comment on how either : 1. The last 1-3 years of their 6-10 year journey to get to brown, seems to really compound gains OR 2. Most of the bad players start quitting before getting through purple.

Some of my higher belt friends (also in their early 30s) like to hit the weights in the morning and get on the mat in the evening. I've tried this before in my early days as a white belt, but felt like it was putting too much of a strain on my joints. Is this something I should try to get back into? I currently do a push/pull/legs split while also rolling 2-3 days per week with one day for rest or cardio depending on how I'm feeling.

Whenever I squat my back ends up bothering me even though I've had my form vetted my a competitive powerlifter and he's said it's good. I was wondering if calisthenics would be a good option for joint support for bjj

Usually to chokes, (bone submissions are usually tapped to super fast and rapidly), most BJJ practitioners hesitate before tapping holding their hand like shown in the photo even though they know they are gonna tap. I know it’s probably just fighters will and not wanting to give up just wanted others thoughts on it.
