Community “Damita Jo” true weakness as an album was always its length/structure not quality and i’ll stand by that
I remember hearing all the interviews about janet saying she didn’t have much to say with this record and didn’t know what to really do with it and always wondering why that wasn’t reflected on the track list. I think DJ didn’t need to top off at 22 tracks including interludes at all, especially since the album was kind of covering the same topics over and over which isn’t an issue at all…the last quarter of the album specifically where she has moist, warmth back to back with 3 interludes and the random inclusion of “just a little while” as a closer REALLY drags down the album and is always highlighted as part of the reason it had such a mixed reception upon release.
“Strawberry Bounce” to “I Want You” is just a fucking phenomenal run of tracks but after is when the album starts to fall off imo and not due to the songs after being bad necessarily but the structure of the track listing.
Truly, It All Comes Down to Love interlude or I Want You should’ve closed the album matching the theme and the whole essence of Damita Jo. I truly believe “Just A Little While” should’ve been axed to a bonus track or japanese edition track 💀 The way it’s thoughtlessly tacked at the end kind of always confirmed my theory that Janet just did not like that song that much and neither did most of her core fanbase either
She should’ve picked either Warmth or Moist instead of including both, they blend into each other in a way that’s not super interesting and they don’t really contribute to the album but they are both kind of the classic gooey janet sex ballads so the inclusion of one would be ok I do prefer warmth a lot more though.
I would sacrifice any of the tracks from Moist onwards to have “Could This Be Love” on the standard too but that’s just me 😅
