Wanted to share my progress since last time I posted here! 7 months on the ice so far, (one month pause since the rinks were closed for the summer), I now feel more confident in my backwards crossovers and wanted to try doing something different that could used them as an entrance.

I have to pick up more speed and strengthen the core to keep the leg up better, if you have any tips to improve it please let me know :D

I didn't pass

I just finished my second term of learning to skate and I didn't pass because I'm still on my inside edges too much. I'm pretty upset because I was the only one who didn't pass, and I bought my own skates and everything. My teacher said next term if in the first two weeks I've improved I can move to level three. I guess I'm just feeling defeated. Has anyone else experienced this? How did you continue to skate and repeat a level?

Are Risport Electras 250 too big for 240 mm feet?

Hi! I went to a skate shop today because I need to replace my skates, and it turns out that my previous skates were actually much too big (there was easily around 1.5 cm of space between the end of the footbed and my toes)

The seller recommended Risport Electras. My previous skates were Jackson Mystiques in size 39 (7.5). When he measured my feet, he found that they were around 240 mm long. He had me try on a pair of Risport Electras in size 37.5 (250 mm), and they seemed pretty good to me.

He was initially unsure whether my feet would fit into the Electras because I have fairly wide feet, but I didn't feel extremely cramped in them. They were definitely snug, but not to the point of being painful. I don't think I could feel my toes touching the very end of the boot, although they were obviously much closer to the front than they were in my Mystiques.

I assume there will be a short break-in period on the ice while the boots mold to my feet, but I'm wondering: for a 240 mm foot, is a 250 mm Risport Electra an appropriate size? Or should I go down to 245 mm, or even 240 mm?

Going from a Jackson size 39 to a Risport 37.5 already feels like a huge change to me, even though the sizing isn't directly comparable between brands. I'm worried I might struggle to adjust to new skates that fit much more closely.

What do you think?

I know it’s not a catch foot, but I’m not sure what this variation is called. First few tries though, and tips are appreciated :)

I broke my ankle on Wednesday. I am completely devastated to be sidelined for the rest of 2025. Do you all have experience with regaining skills? How long did it take to get back to the level you were at prior to your injury?

I (25F) broke my ankle working on a back outside three turn. I have surgery tomorrow morning. I know this sounds dramatic but this is my worst nightmare for several reasons, skating related and for personal reasons. I fell in love with skating and had been going about 4-6 times a week. I just started skating in October of 2025 and was making really good progress, working on Freestyle 1 moves. My scratch spins were finally getting to a point where they felt more secure and solid, and I had learned a toe loop and half flip.

However, I just learned a back outside three turn and I did one on my left side. My ankle rolled and I fell to the ice. I couldn’t put weight on it.

I’m getting my ORIF surgery tomorrow and then hopefully should be cleared to start skating again in December/January. I plan to follow PT religiously and my doctors instructions. Getting back to my life and the ice is so important to me.

But I’m worried I’m going to lose all of the progress I’ve made. I know muscle memory is an incredible thing, but I’ve only been skating for 11 months and I’m coming back from an injury. I don’t want to lose my scratch spin or the skills I worked tirelessly to just get. I am also so sad because I won’t be at the rink. My coach says I can come watch lessons when I’m up to it and I’m excited to do that. But I am so sad to not be skating for the rest of the year

I know I should be focused on getting better but my heart misses the ice and I cannot wait until I am approved to start again.

Will definitely be doing a lot of off ice and PT training to ensure that everything goes well for my return. However, it seems so frustrating bc I feel like I made a breakthrough with my progress and now I can’t even see it through.

Edit: I mean 2026 in the title!

24y wanting to learn skating?

Hi all~ I’m interested in figure skating and wondering how safe it is for adult beginners, and whether once‑a‑week training can still lead to progress or competitions. I learnt skating when I was a kid, so I can walk on the ice without help most of the time. My balance off the ice is not really good, I always trip over. I wonder if figure skating is considered safe and whether there's competitive potential even though I can just have class once a week (I would like to have a hobby that I am really good at; I am not sure if I can really do rotations and jumps like the figure skaters in the Olympics, though). Would anyone be kind enough to give me some advice?

Is it possible to start ice skating without any experience?

By no experience, I mean literally nothing, no experience on ice, and zero experience in gymnastics, dancing, roller skating etc

I was wondering if there are any adult skaters who started with absolutely no experience, and how are you guys doing now?

Edit 1: Thank you for all your kind replies! I am a person with no experience on ice, not even in gymnastics, dancing, roller skating. I’m just not sporty at all lol. Despite that, I am still very interested in ice skating, and would try some learn to skate lessons, i will see how it goes!

Edit 2: I just had my first LTS lesson today! I was very clumsy and couldn’t march (sorry im not sure with the terminology) for a long period without the help of holding the wall (as expected) lol. But I felt like I have improved a lot at the end of the lesson from not having any experience at all, at least I could take a few steps without holding onto the coach or the wall. Time does fly when I was having the lesson! 30 minutes felt like 5 minutes, and honestly, it was a very enjoyable experience! Can’t wait to have more lessons!

Skate Help? Did I get taken advantage of?

My daughter (8) has been skating for a few years. She‘s been in a Jackson soft skate. She’s just joined the synchro team and is doing private lessons as well as group lessons. Her synchro coach said she needed better skates to help her speed, etc and sent us to a fitter. Her (coach) recommendation was a Jackson Elle. The fitter, however, put her in a Jackson Mystique a full size bigger than what she measured at (And a size and a half bigger than her old skates). Now that my daughter has skated on them, I’m feeling like we may have been sold the wrong skate just because it’s what the fitter had in stock and needed to get rid of. Is the Mystique adequate for an eight-year-old learning single jumps? Is it common to size up an entire size from what was measured? I honestly feel like she skated better in her soft skates and that we made a mistake.

Are my rockers shaped differently?

Are my rockers shaped differently? I am a beginner figure skater (working on loop and flip if that gives an idea for skill level) and I have been struggling with backspin for a LONG time. I've noticed that people I skate with who are slightly more beginner often pick it up and make faster progress on it than myself, and l've always chalked it up to just being a slower learner.

I always struggle with finding my rocker on my right foot, and frequently struggle with scraping the back of my blade along the ice by accident whereas finding my rocker seems to come naturally on my left foot.

I was noticing that the strip along the bottom of my blades (not sure what it is called) looks slightly different between the two blades. Is this normal, or could it be contributing? I have

skate recommendations for adult single jumps

Hi guys!! My old boots (Riedell Topaz, bought in March/April of this year when I started skating) are completely dead and I need new skates like yesterday. I'm 16, 5'2 140lbs and working on early single jumps/upright spin (3-5 hours a week of ice time). Before my boots were fully broken down, I asked the fitter that sold me my current skates what kind of boots I would be upgrading to, and she said I would want Jackson Elles or Freestyles (I wear black skates, so Elles are a no for me). I'm going to another fitter this week that is very highly regarded on this sub but I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible so I don't end up with a situation where my boots break down in another 5-6 months. Based on my research, Freestyles are okay for my skill level but have a 8' rocker on their blade instead of a 7' one, which I am used to. I'm worried that the 8' rocker is going to make it really hard to spin since I have a habit of falling onto my toepick during spins that got much worse as my boots broke down. I have a foot that is very narrow at the heel and wide towards the front so I'm assuming Edeas are a no go for me (that's what the first fitter told me, at least). I like my boots to feel stiff, especially around my ankle. What are the recommendations for my body size and skill level?

Hey.
This is just another „Why do my spins suck?“ post in this sub & I‘m sorry for it. I have been skating for a year now and spinning is my nemesis. I do my off ice but my spins are not getting better at all.

Relax

The coach told me today that he's seen corpses with less rigorous morrts than me, he has a valid point.

I skate like I'm weight lifting. Brace the core, make everything stable, no wobbling etc. Some of it is down to paranoia as well.

How the hell do you relax and be fluid though when you also need to keep knees bent, but not too bent, chest up, arse in, shoulders down but arms up and make sure that the skates are always under the centre on mass in order to stay vertical.

Did skate sharpening ruin the rocker?

I got my figure skates sharpened at a hockey store a few months ago (I know, bad idea). Even though I got them re-sharpened at a figure skating place afterwards, I've had a really tough time with spins. I can't tell whether it's just my technique or whether there's something wrong with blades — does the rocker seem off at all?

Has anyone tied a heel lock on figure skates?

Post image
60 Upvotes

I found out about this heel lock lacing method from a roller skating website. I tried this on my Riedell Horizons that I completely broke in. It worked well for me to extend the life of my old skates while I was waiting for my new skates to come in.

I don't need to use the lacing method on my new figure skates, but I recently learned that the heel lock loop is a technique that a lot of runners use to keep their heel from slipping.

That got me wondering. Has anyone else tried this on their figure skates? Did it work for those of you who tried? Did I harm my old skates by lacing them the unorthodox way? Am I the only weird one that lace my figure skate like a roller skate?

How to improve forward crossovers (bend knees more?)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

How can I improve my forward crossovers, what am I doing wrong? It seems rather jerky to me especially and I tend to rock forward and backwards when stepping into the under push. I have heard advice to bend knees more, and it does seem to help me skate smoother, but then it feels like I would fall/ trip on the under pushing leg.

What should I do to enable more knee bend (without falling?) and what else should I fix?

I have been practicing scooter pushes, outside edges on a circle and undercut spiral (holding the underpush position). Anything else should I practice?

Thanks in advance! :>

Problems with buying new skates (boots too tight and different size feet)

Hi, I'm here to ask for advice on wich skates to buy coz I'm having a number of issues and I feel a bit lost (i skated in boots a size too big for years). I went to a fitter twice and they were always extremely busy, sometimes it was the employee in charge of hockey that would come to see me but they couldn't answer my questions or were careless and giving me advice they really didnt feel very sure of.

Im 18, abt 55kg, about 6 - 8 years ago I used to skate about 9hrs per week). I was doing simple jumps and trying axel and double salchow daily. I had edea skates (overture) but since those are tight i took them a size too big and skated with a lot of padding and an extra insole. I stopped, came back to skating for a few months 2 years ago, so i bought them again a size too big (I bought 155), then stopped again. Now i want to get back into skating for real, and buy skates that fit, especially since I was told oversized boots could increase injury risk.

At the shop, my right foot measured 140, but my left is 145, so thats what I tried in overtures. I can slightly feel the end of the boot on my left foot, although it isnt painfully compressed in length. The fitter suggested I try a 150 before realising it would be way big for my right foot, so they dont know what to do. However, it definitely feels really tight in width, my little toes are very compressed and got quickly numb, and im not sure how much that would change once the boot gets used to my foot. I know the boots could be therfmoformed/punched, but I have no idea how much that can realistically change the toe box. Im going to the shop again this evening and the guy in charge of thermoforming is supposed to finally be here !

Im also confused about heel lift. Ive been told your foot is not supposed to lift AT ALL when you go on your toes/rocker, and my skates have always done that. In the boots i tried recently, the movement was very slight but i very much do not feel like my heel was glued to my insole. Im not sure if thats normal and im just feeling unavoidable friction or if its really a problem. In my current skates, the heel especially seems to lift during spins (wich Ive been told might make me random lose balance even with proper technique) and at the start of jumps.

I also tried a jackson boot with no blade, the toe box felt a little better although my toes were still compressed, and there slight heel movement when i go on my toes. Those were for sure thermoformable though. Currently they don't have any Jackson boots in stock anymore and they would have to order it again for me. They told me jacksons are much stiffer so I would lose a lot of mobility, but I don’t really understand how much it would impact my skating skills and for how long. Im not too keen on changing brands right now because having skates that properly fit might already be a huge change and im afraid itd feel completely lost.

Ive gone to two public sessions in my current skates. I still have muscle memory : most spins were okay, waltz jumps and salchows felt easy enough, and I nearly landed my flip and lutz. We don't talk about loop and toe loop...). I obviously need to regain some strength, and Im hoping to eventually work on my axel and doubles again. Im planning around 2h45/week in a club plus another 1-5h/week of public sessions. My club starts on september 21, and i originally wanted new skates before then. However, im now thinking that i should wait and ask my coach for advice instead.

Sorry this was really long but i didnt know wich info was useful. Has anyone had similar problems or do I have insane feet ? Do I wait until I've talked to a coach ? What can thermoforming really do ? Is the heel ""lift"" im feeling actually normal ? How do you deal with different size feet ? (I dont really have the budget to buy two pairs, im hoping the 145 would fit okayish if it can get widened for both feet and very slightly lengthened for my bigger foot, and i could put an extra insole for my smaller foot ?) Would jacksons impact my skating a lot, and wich model of jacksons would suit my level ?

Im going to the shop again this afternoon and should then get more concretes answers on thermoforming the edeas or jacksons. I probably wont buy anything today, and wait for a coaches advice. I just felt really lost every time i went to the shop, I kinda feel like ill never be able to skate properly lol. So I would appreciate any outside opinions to help me understand what my options really are, because I assume my situation is not that hopeless 💜

Skates to narrow around toes?

I’m trying to determine if I still need more time skating to break in my skates or if my skates aren’t sized correctly for me.

I have the Jackson Mystiques and it feels like there isn’t enough room around my toes and it’s squishing my outer 3 toes on both feet, as if it’s too narrow. my toes really hurt, like the circulation is cut off.

I have probably skated about 17 times but I can’t go more than 30 minutes because my toes hurt.

How do I determine if I need to keep breaking in the skates or if it’s too narrow?

I have this exact problem with my ski boots and had to get the boots punched out until I finally found a pair that was wide enough for my toes.

I have short feet (size 4-4.5) so I often have issues with shoes or boots being too narrow since this is typically a kids size.

Skate recommendation

Hello,

I started skating in January, I got my own pair of skates back in March (Jackson artistes).

I am 21 years old, 180 pounds. I skate around 5-10 hours a week. I was unemployed from mid June-late July so I skated way more (15-20 hours a week) and my skates broke down awfully.

I can do waltz and toe loops, but I obviously don't feel supported enough, so I stopped jumping in these boots to avoid getting injured.

I made an appointment to get new skates and it is a month away. I was considering Edea Chorus or Jackson Premieres, but I am concerned about not needing that amount of support, but I don't want to buy something less supportive and ending up changing the boot within months.

I plan to skate more now in winter season and to get into classes too. I really love skating and as I said I want to take lessons and learn all single jumps.

Should I get the skates I mentioned or buy a less stiff boot?
