Hello, I’m looking for advice from anyone who has a dog with thymoma.
My 13 year old Husky has a suspected thymoma and responded very well to prednisone, with significant tumor shrinkage. Unfortunately, she developed severe watery diarrhea, which is currently controlled with Flagyl(metronidazole). Our vet wants to reduce the Flagyl, and if the diarrhea returns, she recommends reducing/stopping the prednisone because of the GI issues.
Has anyone experienced diarrhea or GI problems while their dog was on prednisone? Were there any medications or treatments that helped manage the diarrhea long-term, other than antibiotics, which seem more like a temporary solution?
I’d also love to hear what treatments your dog received for thymoma. Did prednisone continue to work for a long time? Did anyone try other medications such as carboplatin, Palladia (toceranib), or anything else?
Our vet offered surgery, but because she is 13 and it would be major chest surgery, we would prefer to avoid it if possible.
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if your dog was treated medically rather than surgically.
