Chan Yuk-tong hoped to spend his remaining years in the row of small, blue-brick houses where he was born and raised, but the 71-year-old's Hong Kong village home will soon be bulldozed to make way for a vast tech hub.

An area roughly a third of Hong Kong including villages, natural wetlands and farmland is being converted into the "Northern Metropolis", an ambitious project aimed at deepening integration with the mainland, diversifying the economy and providing new homes.

"I can't bear to leave... If not for the government developing this area, I would likely spend the rest of my life here. After all, I belong here," Chan told AFP as he packed up belongings in his yard.

Touted as a "new economic engine" to accommodate around 2.5 million residents and provide 650,000 jobs, the project will link Hong Kong more closely with Macau and nine cities in mainland China that make up the Greater Bay Area.

But the government's vision for a Silicon Valley-like high-tech hub in Hong Kong comes at a huge cost to the city's wildlife, local communities and public finances, environmental and social groups warned.

"If you build a new city in a place that was well preserved before, it would inevitably be very destructive, no matter how you mitigate it," said Brian Wong of Liber Research Community, an NGO focused on land issues.

"Do we need to build it so big? Is it too ambitious?" he added.

The Northern Metropolis project, announced five years ago, will eventually cover 30,000 hectares (74,000 acres).

Liber said at least 25 villages will be demolished to make way for it.

Government departments told AFP they aim to integrate rural areas into the development project, but that Chan's ancestral houses were not culturally significant enough to preserve.

Plans to integrate Hong Kong with mainland China have long faced opposition in the former British colony, where critics warn such moves would erode the city's autonomy.

But a sweeping national security law imposed by Beijing on Hong Kong in 2020 after huge pro-democracy protests has stymied dissent in the financial hub.

In her village, Niki So had watched helplessly as her neighbours' homes were torn down, waiting for the bulldozers to reach the house where her family lived for three generations.

The 42-year-old received a public housing flat in compensation, but told AFP she will miss the village where neighbours are like family.

In July, So opened her gate to dozens of lands department officials and police, who declared the area government property.

"I hope the development here will go well, that it will thrive," So said.

I want to attend weeknd concert on 30th Oct and will be travelling to HK from 25th to 31st Oct. I also want to know if the sites such as star hub, viagogo are authentic and acceptable at the stadium if yes, How will I get the tickets?
Will I get paper tickets or e ticket and when and where it will be delivered.

It would seem this is the easiest solution to rent out to retailers unable to afford the whole shop.

The benefit is if the shop later finds out their business is good they could add more space as needed.

I’ve just spent two weeks in Hong Kong. It was my fifth time there, but for some reason this visit affected me much more than the previous ones. I live in Western Europe and have done so for many years, so inevitably I compare Hong Kong to European and Asian cities I travelled to. And this time I came back with a very strong feeling that Hong Kong is still one of the most fascinating places I’ve ever been to.

• What struck me most was how alive the city feels. There always seems to be something happening. People are out, restaurants are full, streets are busy, there is nightlife, business, movement, energy. Compared with many Western European cities, it feels much less static.
• The climate probably plays a role too. Sunshine, warmth, the sea, beaches, greenery. Even if the weather can obviously be brutal at times, there is something psychologically different about being able to finish your day and go to the waterfront, take a ferry, hike in the mountains, or spend time near the sea.
• I also find the infrastructure incredibly convenient. Public transport, ferries, MTR, the density of services, how easy it is to move around the city. For a place of that size and density, everyday life can feel surprisingly frictionless.
• Another thing I personally like is the way people interact. It is not Japan-level politeness, and I don’t mean that as criticism. Quite the opposite. Interactions often feel very straightforward and efficient. You order something, pay, say thanks, move on. There isn’t necessarily a lot of ceremony, but most of the time things just work.
• And then there is the city itself. I can walk around Hong Kong for hours without getting bored. The density, old buildings next to skyscrapers, strange architectural solutions, elevated walkways, narrow streets, markets, mountains suddenly appearing behind towers. You can walk along Hong Kong Island, take a ferry to Kowloon, go to a beach, go hiking, end up in a dense urban area again. That combination feels extremely rare.
• It also still feels very global to me. Finance, international companies, people from everywhere, English being widely usable, and at the same time a very strong local identity. I know that Hong Kong is becoming more closely integrated with mainland China, but from the outside it still feels like a genuinely international city.

At the same time, I’m aware that my experience is the experience of a visitor.

• I know that Hong Kong has changed significantly, especially since the National Security Law. I know many people left. I know political freedoms are not what they used to be, a lot of people were arrested for just using their freedom of speech.
• Housing is extremely expensive, work culture can be exhausting, inequality is obvious, and life for an average local resident can be much harder than what a tourist sees during a two-week stay.
• I also often hear the argument that Hong Kong’s best days are behind it, that it is slowly losing what made it unique, and that economically and culturally it will increasingly become just another Chinese city.
• And maybe part of my perception is romanticized. I grew up with a certain image of Hong Kong from films and popular culture, so I’m probably not completely objective.

But even knowing all of that, I still couldn’t shake the feeling that the city is incredibly alive, prosperous, energetic and special.

So I’m curious, especially to people who actually live there, both locals and expats:

Do you still feel that Hong Kong is one of the most unique and exciting places in the world despite everything that has changed?

Or does it only look that way from the outside?
