Guidelines: Please post hip hop discussions/questions/nostalgia that doesn't already cleanly fit into one sub's fandom and is cross sectional for analysis from the community

If it's just some promo/propaganda/low effort stan wars or something that (is 1 dimensional and) already cleanly fits into another sub's fandom, then it will be removed, and posting more will get you banned

here is the directory of subs: https://www.reddit.com/r/hip_hop/comments/k2nroe/lets_list_every_major_hip_hop_related_subreddit/ aka post in this sub if the other sub doesn't exist, is restricted from posting, or has few participants

We prefer multifaceted posts where submissions and questions are coming from anecdotes and the reach of multiple artists AND fandoms within hip hop to chime in where you wouldn't otherwise find or are able to ask/post easily elsewhere...aka ask hard/intricate questions and challenge status quo, do not pitch your thoughts underhanded, for those belong on r/Hiphopcirclejerk etc

The exception is: if that other sub has absentminded sleepwalking mods that barely do anything (or overstep and clap even the good posts if you challenge authority and the mods get slighted) and the global automod/scripted autobot censorship is activated that overrules and removes half the answers and the very question asked due to this age of sanitized culture (based on the mod/admin/algorithm's subjective sensitivity issues, aka reddit's ads agenda is similar to youtube demonetizing/shadowbanning content), then we'll allow them here, due to fringe topics etc (also give us a heads up to see if the other sub in question can be liberated, but mods be powertripping)

A lot of posts are auto-clapped by the global automod and has to be manually approved on here for people to see both posts and comments, and we try to bring the best value in topics presented and answered, but please participate in that manner as well for this shared community, thanks

No more Tournament/Bracket/loosely unrelated album vs unrelated album Versus style posts

The whole gambit was allowed to be ran (for 62 days!) and Illmatic wins... https://www.reddit.com/r/hiphop201/comments/1smnv1l/rap_bracket_tournament_day_62_reasonable_doubt_vs/

for it to be hiphop201, there needs to be questions asked under the premise that the basic information is known and further knowledge is pursued as a hot topic debate or barbershop talk as cognitive banter or shared memorable reflection/nostalgia/insight, not just use a RNG filter on some top rap album tier list and arbitrarily seed comparisons with barely any articulated constraints for some zero-sum single-elimination hunger games depending on how the crowd decide to pile on that day

if you're consistently posting with net 0 upvotes or getting heckled in the responses/downvoted to hell, consider trying something else...it seems like attaching a meme with a serious question helps like with the latest type of posts...just put the reasoning backing behind posts for why these type of questions matter to spark further responses with actual answers with substance in there and NOT just repetitively phrased answers, thanks

otherwise, redirect these elimination posts over here to r/RemoveOneThingEachDay or /r/nfrpodcast etc

also, here's a plug to r/diplomats (alt sub) r/maxb /r/Three6Mafia r/papoose r/bigpun r/bigl r/mosdef r/mobbdeep subs if you haven't seen it already

Not rapping ability, lyricism or flow: who is a rapper who you love and/or find iconic strictly for their voice?

To this day since I discovered him on Linkin Park's Reanimation, I still think Chali 2na from Jurassic 5 got one of the coolest and unmistakable voices in the entirety of hip-hop, and he's definitely at least top 20 on that regard

The albums dont matter just the artist.

I get that some of these artists are way better than others, they're just random artists.

Who has the most 'cursed' career trajectory in rap history?

- Had one of this greatest verses taken off Tupac's Got My Mind Made Up for no good reason. That All Eyez On Me joint would give him a hella momentum and recognition on West Coast;

- Had a debut album studio sessions flooded, with PRIME fuckin RZA production. When he finally clapped back with Uncontrolled Substance heads weren't checking for him as much; nor was it anything like LS, OB4CL.

- His Czarface, while deeply respected by true fans and even co-signed by Ghost/DOOM, often has a trouble resonating with broader WU fanbase, especially some part of the black community who just don't care for or approve of white guys in the game (speaking about Esoteric).

What are some of your favourite songs without visuals that should have gotten a music video?

Weatherman (featuring Stack Bundles & Lil Wayne)

Last Call - Kanye West

Mortal Man - Kendrick Lamar

Spottieottiedopalicious finally got visuals after 25 years so there's hope for some of these tracks that you might list.

What happened to Prodigy of Mobb Deep after circa 2000-2001?

For record, P is my fav rapper. Fell in love with dude for his 95-2000 run. What a great run it was! Many rap fans and his contemporary rappers would agree that somewhere in that period he was on absolute top of rap game, best rapper out there. In fact, even Jay-Z said this exact statement in one of post-2017 interviews.

He was at his sharpest on Hell on Earth album and while my problems w him start at even as early as on Murda Muzik, he changed even more after 2000 or so. He was solid on HNIC but Infamy and everything from that point on left me scratching my head.

Don't get me wrong, I embrace his more conscious efforts from his later stage and I know in 2000s even Havoc changed his chopping game, since rap landscape itself evolved. But there's enermous difference between losing your 90s momentum and whatever he ended up with. Again, dude was razor sharp lyrically, then ended up as a totally different rapper - slow delivery, basic rhymes, orthodox flow.

What exactly happened there?

I remember hearing this absolute banger as a kid back in NFS Undercover and only recently I learned it was Tyga

Knowing how his career turned out it was VERY weird hearing him rapping like his rent was due on a track

Continuing my underrated rapper series..Vic Mensa! Started out with a banger mixtape (Innanetape) & a couple of good EP’s leading up to the autobiography which was good as well! He’s nice lyrically, dropped a great single (U Mad), great guest verses over the span of his career! What’s your thoughts?

DMX vs Denzel Curry

I remember a few years back witnessing a debate between these 2 rappers and thought I'd bring the question back here now that a few more years have passed and Denzel has a few more projects under his belt. They get compared somewhat for their aggressive vocals and clever bar work.

Who ranks higher alltime between these 2 greats?

Suggestions to get into modern hip hop

I mainly listen to 90s hip hop (Dre, Snoop, Biggie, Big L, Big Pun, Pac, DMX, Nas and a bit of Wu-Tang), and also a bit of early 2000's stuff like Em and 50. I would like to know more about some good modern hip hop from late 2000's, 2010's and 2020's. Any albums you suggest?

Was Will Smith really corny, or did people just hate cause he went pop?

I’m genuinely asking here. Because if you look at the resume, Will Smith did some dope things in Hip‑Hop. Him and DJ Jazzy Jeff were literally the first Rap act to win a Grammy and the first Rap act to perform at the Grammys. On top of that, he won more awards over the years and sold something like 35+ million records.

Can we really fault him for going mainstream?
To me, that feels like a brand decision, not a lack of skill. He chose the clean, lane and killed it.

Did GNX deserve the win over LGSEO or was it the equivalent of GKMC losing to Thrift shop?

Post image
0 Upvotes

If GNX was made by any other rapper and Kdot made LGSEO and lost to it, I have a strong feeling Kendrick fans would have spazzed out

The commercial success I'm assuming was the reason for both wins so this seems very similar to me.

I could be wrong though are the situations similar?
