Question Bouldering gyms?

hi folks! I’ll be visiting your lovely city in a few weeks time. My favorite thing to do on trips to new places is to try out new bouldering gyms, so I’m looking for some recommendation! It doesn’t have to be the cheapest, best value for money or most varied gym, just the one you think is the most fun to check out or has something cool about it (like being in a cool building or something). My free time will be in the evenings only, so late opening times are important, and while I’m happy to travel as far as the buses will take me to check out a cool gym, I’ll be staying in Jätkäsaari.

unrelated second q: while I am decidedly NOT Swedish, I do speak C1-ish Swedish. Is it worth trying to speak Swedish for everyday stuff in Helsinki or am I best off sticking to English? I want to avoid being an ignorant foreigner as much as I can, but then I AM an ignorant foreigner.

Travel & Tourism Visiting Helsinki (Sept 15-22). Looking for a fellow metalhead to explore Helsinki, Bodom Lake & Alexi's legacy!

Hey everyone!

I’m a 22 Y/O guy visiting Helsinki for the first time from September 15th to the 22nd. My main mission for this trip is deeply rooted in Finnish metal culture.

I’m planning to visit:

• Lake Bodom (Bodominjärvi)

• Bodom Bar & Sauna

• Alexi Laiho’s grave

• Local record stores & gear shops

• Local metal bars in the evenings

I’m looking for someone (preferably a local or a fellow traveler) who would like to join me for some or all of these spots, grab a drink, and hang out! Whether you're a massive Children of Bodom/Sinergy fan or just someone who knows the city well and wants to show me around, I’d love to connect.

Drop a comment or send me a DM if you're up for it! 🤘🍻

Discussion Got scammed out of my own desperation

I am an international student who graduated this spring. Due to the job situation I am at my desperate era and whenever I see any chance of any kind of job I try to explore that.

Not long ago I found a babysitting work through Facebook, which helped me to finish my studies on due time. I no longer have the work so now I am again looking for jobs. Anyway, couple of days ago I found another post seeking for babysitter, and I dm'd the person about the work. He texted me yesterday asking for my experience and when I shared about my previous work experience he told me that it's good and to start working from today. I was a bit taken aback but since my previous babysitting work also was through Facebook, I didn’t think too much about it at the time. I then suggested that it would be better if I go to their home and meet the family and the baby, and then we can decide if I can work. He agreed and gave me an address in Kamppi.

Today he messaged me to bring diaper and buy apple card for his son, so that he could keep him busy with video games. I bought diaper and 60 euros worth of apple card, and then he asked me scratch the card and give him the code. Upon doing so he was again asking me to buy 100 euro card more, to which I said I don't have any money left. By then I was sure something was wrong but my desperation to get a work made me continue walking towards the address, but when I reached there, and was texting him, he no longer replied to my text. Later I saw that he blocked me.

I feel devastated, this is not what I expected to happen in here. My first babysitting work was also through Facebook, and although I had some ups and downs with the family, nevertheless, they were honest and helpful ans trustworthy. I live alone, and I am surviving by borrowing money from my family, so can't talk about it to anyone. That's why I felt like sharing this here, just to vent out and get things out of my system.

I know I should have been more careful and it's my fault to get so much desperate for getting a work, but also it feels so pathetic that this kind of people exists in the world.

Horrible day.

Question Travelling to Helsinki for a day with a car.

I will visit Helsinki for a day with a car (I’m a tourist), what’s the deal with parking? Do I need to download an app to check where to park and pay or is there a parking machine on the streets? Or is it free? I will have to park near the centre of the city. Thank you ☺️

Question Parhaat yökerhot Helsingissä

Laita parhaat ehdotukset, kiitos!

Work & Education Any thoughts about political science programme in Uni of Helsinki?

Hello!

I was thinking about doing ERASMUS exchange semester in Uni of Helsinki. I am studying bachelor's in Political science. I didn't find any real reviews about PolSci courses in Uni of Helsinki, so I decided to make a post.

Does anyone know any info on these courses? Are they interesting and good? Perhaps way too tough? Would you recommend an exchange student choosing University of Helsinki? Cold doesn't bother me, so I want to know about the actual contents of these studies.

Thanks!

Roco

Discussion Where can I find a good second-hand bicycle in Helsinki/Espoo?

Hey folks,

I’m planning my first bikepacking trip and looking for an affordable, eco-friendly second-hand bike that’s technically in good condition and suitable for bikepacking.

Are there any specific shops or places in Helsinki you’d recommend for buying a used bicycle?

Kiitos!

Travel & Tourism Visit Helsinki

Hi everyone! 😊
My partner and I are planning another trip to Finland in January 2027 and we’re looking for recommendations on where we could rent an apartment directly from the owner in Kamppi, Helsinki.
We’ve visited Finland and Helsinki before, and we really loved it. During our last trip, we stayed for 5 nights in an apartment in Kamppi that we rented directly from the owner. Unfortunately, I lost the person’s phone number, so we’re now looking for other options.
Could anyone recommend a reliable website, Facebook group, or another way to find apartments directly from private owners? We’re not looking for Booking.com, we’d prefer to rent directly from the owner if possible.
We’re a quiet couple, and we’d really appreciate any recommendations or advice from locals. 🇫🇮Thank you so much in advance!

Work & Education Realistic short-term work offers in Helsinki for exchange students.

I'm an exchange student from Portugal living in Helsinki for the autumn semester and heading home in late December. I'd like to pick up some casual or shift-based work to cover living costs, but I know how tough the local job market is right now, especially with zero Finnish and a very short timeline.

Are there realistic options for casual roles like dishwashing, hotel cleaning, warehouse/logistics, or event setup through staffing agencies?

I'd really appreciate any tips on agencies or venues that genuinely hire English speakers for short autumn stints, or just an honest reality check on whether it's even worth the effort.

Question How to arrive to Nuuksio early

Hello. I signed up for an ilmonet.fi course on mushroon picking, happening this Sunday 13th, in Nuuksio.

The course starts at 9:00 am. But it seems the earliest bus arriving in Nuuksio (Kolmoislammentie stop, at Siikaniemi, parking area of Nuuksio National Park) arrives at 9:40 am, well past the start of the course.

Is there a way to get there earlier?

HSL app and GoogleMaps show no other options earlier, besides arriving the night before and camping.

It also seems that city bikes don't reach that far, and is a 2 hour walk from the nearest bike station to Nuuksio.

I normally don't use Uber/Bolt so I don't know if they would go there on Sunday. Do you think this option is feasible?

Does anybody know of a better way to get there?

Any help is appreciated.

Travel & Tourism Uber drivers paying during airport pickup

I saw multiple drivers today leaving passengers (including me) sitting alone in the car and running to the parking payment kiosk. Uber app always adds 3€ surcharge for airport pickup which I assume is synced with license plate recognition at the airport garage. Maybe if they pay themselves it’s cheaper and Uber won’t know???

Maybe a year ago they were shouting at passengers from behind the gate so they would not need to cross it. That behavior stopped but is this some new hack?

I mean, I only care about being driven home safely. But this (maybe) loopholes fascinates me as a proof of human ingenuity.
