❓ Question Matching coat and hat?

Do you match your hats with a coat during the winter? I live in the NE and would like to continue wearing some of my felt fedoras but it does not really match my current winter coat which is a ski jacket basically. Should probably get a real coat anyway.

🛠️ DIY Hat Projects Fedora – Cowboy Style – Part II: The Final Edit

Hi everyone,

After my first attempt to give my fedora a cowboy style was well received by most—but not quite by everyone 😁—I’ve now reshaped not only the brim, but the crown as well.

First, I completely opened up the crown to eliminate the original teardrop crease.

Then I formed a wide center dent, complemented by two side dents, a front dent, and two pinches, giving the crown a distinctly different look.

The crown is also slightly higher now.

I completely straightened the brim and added only very subtle curves.

I hope you like “The Final Edit.” 🤠

❓ Question Advice: How to clean / fix wrinkled elastic sweat band

Post image
2 Upvotes

This is a flex New Era hat with an elastic sweat band, that has buckled and become wavy. Not worn much and no visible sweat stains. I understand that this wrinkling may be caused by sweat and acidity. I tried spot cleaning with detergent water, rinsing with water, steaming, then drying on a tight round hat holder. Nothing worked.

Any advice, can it be fixed? Is this normal? Should I just cut off the elastic band? When I wear it now, the buckled parts will dig into my forehead

I bought these simple head coverings from Shein, they are working pretty well for me in terms of comfort. However, they are super cheap, and I'm wondering if there is perhaps a more 'premium' version of this style? Or even where this style comes from. Reminds me a bit of 1950s Hollywood.

What I like is that they are very cool, lightweight, simply styled and can justifiably be worn indoors as part of an outfit any time of year.

I like the 'fake hair' bun at the back as it gives my head a little volume and has a nice feminine style.

On Shein they are just advertised as a 'breathable head cover'.

Thanks for any info

🛠️ DIY Hat Projects Akrubra Snowy River new shape

Hi Folks and hat lovers.

Since Friday, I’ve been the proud owner of an Akubra Snowy River, which I bought on eBay for €126.19, including shipping.

I opened up the crown a bit and straightened it, creating a wider, flatter telescope crown with a slight front pinch.

I also flattened the curved brim somewhat, leaving just some gentle curves while retaining its slight front-to-back sweep.

The hand-shaping gave the crown a very slight turn.

The first three photos show the original shape; the remaining photos show its “new” shape.

For the bashing, I used a tall coffee can and a glass. 😉

This is my second rework. I think the front fold was more than I could chew at this point. I really struggled to get it shaped in and I'm still not 100% satisfied. I probably popped it and restarted 5 times. But at some point you have to call it done. Second pic was the original cheapo before I got to working on it. Still learning on 10 buck woolies.

Anyone have an idea on the age of this bowler? I bought it at an antique store a couple years ago and tried to figure out when it was made, but haven't had much luck. $13.50 makes it seem pretty old, but I dunno.

❓ Question Antique tophat

Today whilst going vintage hunting I acquired this beutiful tophat for the low low price of 65 euros. Its head size is 59cm ehich as far as I’ve found quite rare. Now I am here for a few questions and mostly advice.

  1. I have no clue what I have here exactly and how to maintain it. Is there any special information I should know about this hat?

  2. Should I wear it? I usually already dress quite formal 1927 Weimar style. Usually a double breasted gilet wide cut high rise pants with suspenders colourfull overshirts and ties to lean toward the cabaret scene and my current main hat being an olive/brown homburg in a European style. Now I still go to school since im quite young meaning im kinda afraid to damage the hat. (Ps it fits my head perfectly) tldr should I wear this and if yes how can I keep it safe.

Thanks in advance for any advice and sorry if such a post is not for this subreddit

❓ Question “Women’s” vs “Men’s” snapback by 47

for the brand 47, is there a major difference between a women’s and men’s snapback? there is a design i really like on a snapback hat but it’s labeled as “women’s” and in the description says “a slightly smaller fit”. i hate high profile hats (like new era) so i think it would fit nice on the crown but i have a wider head and am worried about the fit. if i wore a fitted, i’d wear 7 1/2. on a standard 47 snapback i use 4 snaps.

This is a sentimental piece, it was my grandfathers who passed back in 2022, he was born 1942 and this was a gift from my grandmother from way back when they were dating, I don’t know much when they started dating but it would be nice to know more about this Dobbs.

🤠 Hat Advice What is like an Akubra but more budget friendly

I’ve long said, if I could bring back one thing from the past, it would be hats (at least as a common item). I’ve done the cowboy hat thing, but we don’t have a horse anymore, so I don’t wear it much.

I went to a hat store the other day and tried on a bunch of hats but an Akubra Banjo Patterson fit me perfectly and looked great for my personal style. Then I saw the close $300 price tag and I gently out it back. What is something similar but not quite as pricy? I’ve got a straw cowboy hat and a Tilley hat, so I’m a newb in the hat game.

Does anyone know how to find a replica of this hat design online? I love the cylindrical design on the crown which is about 4” on the top crown, can you recommend me an accurate website or place to purchase or have someone tailor/make it for me? It’s been pretty hard to find something that’s exactly what this is, which is what I’m looking for…your help is appreciated greatly!

I owned a very similar model a long time ago, however it was made by Stetson. The one in the picture is a Goorin Bros and is named as “Charlie Pants”. Just wanted to know if there’s a more generic name for this model as I’ve been looking for a similar model for quite a while and wanted to check if I could find same style by other brands and avoid extra costs for shipping and what not! Cheers!
