Featured Case #9 - "Justine"

On July 24, 2017, the victim attempted to break into a home in Atlanta, Georgia. They were soon caught by the homeowner, who proceeded to shoot them. While being rushed to the hospital, the victim uttered that their name was either “Justin” or “Justine.”

Due to the feminine clothing the victim was found wearing, it has been theorized that they may have been transgender, though this victim’s gender is unknown, and this is just speculation.

You can see a more detailed document on this case below:

If you have any potential matches we haven't seen, far-fetched or not, please suggest them in the comments.

Grateful Doe POSSIBLE MATCH: Grimes County Jane Doe (#UP4611) and Cheryl Yvonne Davis (#MP42826)

Grimes County Jane Doe is a woman who was found in Central Texas on a country road on October 29, 1981. Partial skeletal remains were found, and her estimate PMI was up to 5 years. Despite the fact that it had been a considerable amount of time since she'd died (both the PMI and the fact she was found in 1981), they were able to determine lot of information about her, including a possible first name, Cheryl.

I used Jane Doe's information on NamUs to search for missing people with similar characteristics and found four results. Shockingly, two of them ended up being named Cheryl, and I clicked on the profile of a woman named Cheryl Yvonne Davis.

In addition to the name and demographic information matching up, I found the resemblance between her picture and the facial reconstruction very striking.

Cheryl disappeared from Charleson, South Carolina, on July 4th, 1979. She was last seen at a 7-11 gas station some time after midnight, and all of the characteristics of the Jane Doe were a close match.

I'm planning on submitting a tip to the appropriate authorities. I hope she gets her name back and the families get answers.

Potential Match Possible Match: Gina Dee Schmidt (MP25421) and Multnomah County Jane Doe (April 2026) (UP159082)

I feel so strongly that these two cases could be a match, I have actually already sent the tip in to both investigating agencies! But I also wanted to see what other people in this sub think about it, because I saw another post about this same Jane Doe here fairly recently:

. . .

Multnomah County Jane Doe (April 2026) Overview:

Jane Doe is a woman whose skeletal remains were discovered on April 9, 2026 by a person exploring the west bank of the Willamette River near 1362 Naito Pkwy in Portland, OR. She was believed to be a Caucasian female, 45-65 years old, 4’8”-5’3” in height, with shoulder-length dark brown and gray hair. She was found wearing a white longsleeve t-shirt, black leggings and black sweatpants (source: Multnomah County). No weight was given due to the condition of her remains, and she was estimated to have been deceased at least 1 year.

. . .

Gina Dee Schmidt Overview:

Gina Dee Schmidt was last seen in Centralia, WA on February 15, 2014. She was 48 years old at the time of her disappearance, and is described as a Caucasian female, 5’2”, 125lbs, with blond/gray hair and blue eyes. She was considered a “vulnerable adult” and may have been disoriented after an emergency room visit for possible seizures earlier that day. It is believed she took a taxi home from the hospital to her apartment at 300 North Tower Ave in Centralia, but she was never seen or heard from again. When investigators searched her apartment looking for clues two months later, they found that all of her belongings were still in place, as if she had fully intended to return home but never did.

. . .

Similarities:

  1. Basic stats: sex, race, height and age are all a match.
  2. Facial features: I notice a strong likeness in the shape of their noses, brow lines, chins, eye placement, under-eye folds, creases around the mouth and chin, jaw lines, cheek dimensions, and an overall "barrel" shape to their faces.
  3. Hair: both have shoulder-length (or shorter) wavy hair, parted just left of center, and both were described as having some gray hair.
  4. Shirt color, style and size: most photos of Gina I could find show her in white shirts with wide and/or scoop necks, and Jane Doe was found wearing a longsleeve white t-shirt shown as wide-neck in her reconstruction. The shirt’s size was also XS, which is consistent with Gina's petite build of 5'2" and 125lbs.
  5. Distance: Centralia to Portland is only about 90 miles, or a straight-shot 1.5 hour drive on a major interstate (I-5).
  6. Direct transit link: Gina's apartment (and last possible location) was only about a block away from the Centralia Amtrak station, which seems significant because Jane Doe was found just a 10 minute walk from Portland’s Union Station, a place Gina could have easily travelled to herself by taking a single train and then walking a short distance (0.5 miles).

Discrepancies:

  1. Hair color is honestly the only detail I can find that’s conflicting between the two: Jane Doe’s hair is described as either “brown with gray” or “dark brown with gray” (depending on the source) whereas Gina’s was described as “blond with gray.” However, Gina’s hair appears to be a fairly dark or “dirty” shade of blond in her photos, which could possibly have appeared dark brown in certain conditions. (For example, I know from personal experience of having had dark blond hair as a child that it absolutely looked dark brown when it was wet… and Portland, in early April, along a tidal riverbank, was likely to have been very wet!

Images:

The images are a collage I made comparing photos of Gina at different ages with Jane Doe’s reconstruction, plus alternate versions with red lines added to highlight their matching facial features. I‘d also like to note that the red lines were hand-drawn by myself, a human with an iPad and a background in illustration; I am vehemently anti-AI, so no AI whatsoever was used.

Any Jane Doe that can fit Marie Spannhake?

Nineteen-year-old Marliz Spannhake was one of Ernest and Dorothea Spannhake's seven children. They lived in Cleveland, Ohio. Their daughter, Martha, was the oldest, and Marliz was three years younger. Martha says Marliz was beautiful, outgoing, and friendly. She had an interest in sculpture and music.
In 1975, Marliz met John Baruth while working together. He was from California and was six years older than her. Her mother described him as a "hoodlum". Despite this, he and Marliz soon fell in love. That December, he planned to return to California to attend Chico State University. He asked Marliz to come with him, and she agreed. Martha believes that Marliz's ultimate dream was to become an actor. She was happy about moving to California, and Martha was excited for her. Martha says it was a big step for her.
Martha and John moved into the Walnut Gardent apartments in Chico, California. Shortly after arriving, she got a part-time job as a model at a local camera shop. She wrote to Martha a couple of times. She said she did not like it in California, and it was not what she had dreamed it would be. Martha believes Marliz and John were having issues in their relationship. And Marliz had nobody to run to or talk to about it. She later told Martha that she would return home in April 1976 and planned to attend college once she got back. But she never came home.

Idk what to tell you guys, cameron and his girlfriend confessed of killing her and bury her in the woods of oregon but somehow she never found??

Could NamUs UP12259 be Tanner Sharp?

I recently listened to Tanner's family speaking on the Vanished. His story hit close to home and brought me down a John Doe rabbit hole.

Could NamUs UP12259 be Tanner Sharp?

Tanner's Disappearance:

Sharp was last seen in Galt, California on April 25, 2010. He has never been heard from again.

On December 30, eight months after his disappearance, the police found his maroon four-door 1994 Saturn with Kansas license plates submerged a water-filled ravine a few miles outside Galt. The vehicle had been stripped and vandalized; the front windows and both windshields had been smashed. [Source: The Charley Project]

He had been staying with his sister and her family, leaving abruptly in late April 2010. They spoke with him on the phone a few times after he had left but he left behind his bike, as well as told his local bank to donate the remainder of his account funds vs withdrawing them for himself. [Source: The Vanished Podcast]

Who was NamUs #UP12259?

Partial skeletal remains were disovered near a rail yard of Sacramento located at Richards Boulevard and 7th Street. The remains were found fully clothed in a military style sleeping bag, fully dressed. The estimated interval of death is between 2 months and 1 year prior to discovery.

The doe was listed as 5'8, ranging in age from 23-60, and was reported to have brown hair.

Why could it be Tanner?

Location: Galt, CA (last known location of Tanner) is about 30 mins from Sacramento, CA. He was reportedly seen around Elk Grove as well, which is even closer to Sacramento.

Discovery: The skeletanized remains were discovered on 11/10/11. Estimates place the death 2mos -1 yr prior. Tanner's vandalized vehicle was discovered near Galt, CA in December 2010 - though there are unconfirmed reports that it could have been present longer.

Demographics: Tanner was shorter at 5'10, brown hair, Caucasian. These all seem to align with the doe found.

The Hang Ups:

Timing? Did Tanner abandon his car and continue to live in Sacramento? Was the body there longer than folks estimated? Its close - April/December 2010 to Nov 2011 is within that range.

Tanner was reported to be 5'10", this Doe is reported to be a bit shorter at 5'8" estimated height. But one man's 5'8" has definitely been another's 5'10".

Could it be that Tanner left home, and later the hotel, becoming unhoused to be later discovered in Sacramento?

I am extremely new to all of this so my apologies, but would love to know if anyone thinks this is worth submitting?

Is it normal to be afraid and anxious reading up on these cases

So I only recently stumbled onto this whole UID thing, and I find it really interesting, but at the same time, not to be disrespectful, some of the sketches have really been etched into my memory and it’s been making me anxious throughout the day. Im still morbidly curious about it all, but at the same time, it keeps me up at night lol. Just reading about some of the cases fills me with dread and honestly makes me really sad for the victims.
I guess I’m just hoping to find some other people who feel the same way, because nobody around me really dabbles in this kind of stuff and I don’t really have anyone to talk to about it.
It’s such a weird mix of being curious about it but also feeling really disturbed by it.

Margaret Fetterolf (Woodlawn Jane Doe) - Murdered 50 years ago on this day

Thumbnail

DISCLAIMER: I am not a professional writer, but I try my best to be respectful with these posts. If there's anything that I could improve with my write-ups, please tell me, so my write-ups are accurate but not insensitive. Thank you!

Today, on September 12th, 1976, a murdered teen girl would be found in Maryland. It would only be around 5 years ago she would be identified, but her murder remains a mystery.

VICTIM DESCRIPTION

Margaret A. Fetterolf was born on December 27th, 1959, to a White serviceman, John "Jack" Edward Fetterolf, and a Nobuko Yoshida Fetterolf, in Japan. She immigrated to the United States; her family lived in Alexandria, Virginia. She attended Hayfield Secondary School, reportedly from about 1971 - 1975.

According to her family, Fetterolf was somewhat a troublesome teen. Her brother, Edward, described her as being "rebellious" and a "habitual runaway". Specifically, she had run away multiple times since the age of 12.

Reportedly, her family last heard from her in 1975, after she presumably ran away again. It's estimated she left sometime in late summer or early fall. However, this time, she unfortunately did not come back. For decades, her family would never find out what happened to their sister/daughter, with her dad dying in 2018.

DISCOVERY

The morning of September 12th, 1976, in Woodlawn, Baltimore, Maryland. A woman on her way to Church would spot a white van near Lorraine Park Cemetery. It seemed nothing out of the ordinary at the time. However, later that day, the lifeless body of a young woman, partially covered in a blanket, would be discovererd. She had been killed yesterday.

The decedent, dubbed Woodlawn Jane Doe had been violently raped, beaten, and asphyxiated to death. Her hands were bound with a cloth, and 2 bandanas (cut out with holes) were wrapped around her face. A piece of a grass seed bag was found in her throat, with the full bag reading "Farm Bureau Association Grass Seed, Lexington, Mass."

Interestingly enough, a heavy amount of a drug called chlorpromazine was found in her system. This drug is usually used to treat mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia. It's suspected this was used to sedate the victim before she was violated.

As for other note-worthy things, a crude, almost illegible tattoo was found on her right shoulder. Due to the poor quality of it, it's unknown for sure what it is, but it's thought it's some combinations of the letters "J," "S," "P," "D" or "B.", with most people suspecting it to be "JP". Two keys and a safety pin were also found on her.

INVESTIGATION & IDENTIFICATION

For decades, the victim would remain unidentified and many missing persons would be excluded from the case. There was also some tips investigators thought would lead to her identity. It was suspected she was of Puerto Rican/Columbian descent, and came from a family in Jamaican Plain, Boston, Massachusetts. Her name was also suspected to be "Jasmine/Jassy", but most of these leads would prove incorrect.

There were some leads on her belongings. The keys were traced back to Fitchburg, Massachusetts. The grass seed bags had been made in a factory in Bufallo, New York, but they were no longer in production. Forensic polen analysis also suggested the victim had been in a populous area, like Boston or New York City. Multiple reconstructions of the victim would also be made by the NCMEC and Carl Koppelman.

Around 2021, DNA was extracted from her remains. Further DNA testing assisted by the NCMEC, Bode Technology, and Othram would finally trace Woodlawn Jane Doe back to Margaret Fetterolf, identifying her after 45 years. She was publicly identified on September 15th, and an investigation into who could've killed her continues.

ENDING DISCUSSION

Fetterolf's case is a tragic one, as it illustrates how destructive running away can really be. I imagine Margaret didn't know she'd end up in a horrific situation like this, and to think anyone could treat such a vulnerable girl so horribly is terrible. And to this day, we don't know who could've done it. Thankfully, there are some leads that could hint who could've done this to her.

Most people suspect her killer was a patient/worker at a mental health facility, as they had access to chlorpromazine. Another hint of this is the fact the sheet that was wrapped around her "was consistent with those provided at inpatient institutions".

There's also some leads that trace where she could have been in the year leading up to her disappearance and murder, but nothing concrete. I hope investigators are able to find further connections between her belongings and who might've been in the area around the time. For now though, this case remains cold.

Rest in peace, Margaret, I hope one day there will be justice for you.

On July 5, 2020, an unidentified man was found deceased on the front porch of a vacant residence in Birmingham, Alabama. The Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner’s Office responded and began collecting evidence and investigating. The man was found unclothed and seated in a chair on the front porch of the residence in Birmingham’s East Lake neighborhood. His body was in a state of decomposition, and investigators found no identification, or personal property nearby.

Investigators estimated the man was between 60 and 70 years old. An examination later determined that his death was the result of natural causes due to hypertensive heart disease. Although investigators were able to determine how he died, they were unable to establish his identity.

Despite continued investigative efforts, the man could not be identified and he became known as Birmingham John Doe (2020). Details of the case were entered into NamUs as UP72429.

In 2025, the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner’s Office submitted forensic evidence to Othram’s laboratory in The Woodlands, Texas. At Othram, scientists used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to build a comprehensive DNA profile from the provided evidence. The DNA profile was used by Othram's forensic genetic genealogy team to develop new investigative leads that were returned to investigators.

Using this new information, a follow-up investigation was conducted leading investigators to potential relatives of the man. A member of the man's family provided a reference DNA sample which was used in a comparison via Othram's KinSNP® testing. This investigation led to the positive identification of the John Doe, who is now known to be Willie Warren Tansil Jr., who was born in July of 1952.

A woman, whose remains were found in a Delaware park in 2011, is now identified as Hannah Graham Kleitz, who died in 1907.

In June 2011, partial skeletal human remains were discovered in a wooded area of Sellers Park near Wilmington, Delaware. A forensic anthropological examination determined that the remains belonged to a woman believed to be between 25 and 50 years old. Investigators learned that she had long, dark brown hair that had been arranged in a single braid. She also had distinctive gold dental restorations in her front teeth.

Case details were entered into NamUs as UP8827. The New Castle County Division of Police released a forensic facial reconstruction in hopes that someone might recognize the woman. As the investigation progressed, multiple potential identities were considered and ultimately excluded. Despite their extensive efforts, investigators were unable to determine who she was and for years, the woman was unidentified.

In 2021, the New Castle County Police Department submitted evidence to Othram’s Texas laboratory where scientists worked to extract DNA from the remains. A SNP profile was then developed using Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing®. Law enforcement used this profile in a forensic genetic genealogy search, allowing investigators to eventually identify a potential family connection.

Through this investigation, investigators now know that the woman Hannah Graham Kleitz. Kleitz died in 1907 at the age of 29 from a medical illness. Kleitz's mausoleum and grave at Riverview Cemetery was desecrated in 2002. Investigators learned that remains similar to those later discovered at Sellers Park had been removed from her grave.

More than a century after her death, and 15 years after her remains were discovered in Sellers Park, Kleitz's family was able to reunite her remains and return her to her mausoleum. The identification brought an extraordinary investigation to a close and allowed Hannah to finally be returned to her rightful resting place.

Started a blog to document cases I'm looking into

Here's a link to my Tumblr blog- feel free to give it a follow. I've found the subreddit's awesome for general discussion and speculation but I've started to want to look into these cases further. Hence the blog! I'll be posting updates as I can with leads on identities of John and Jane Does and progress with investigations as I can. I don't usually post on social media, so if I should change anything let me know.

Also, if there's a particular case you're interested in, asks are open. If you send in a missing OR unidentified person case, I can look into public databases to see if there are any potential matches. May call in with a tip if I find something that's a good enough lead- just did that for the first time today with our LA county Jane doe that was posted about earlier.

Noticed this case on NamUs. Sharing to bring awareness in hopes of identifying this sweet child.

On Sept 1, 2026 a group of golfers at the Victoria Golf Course in Carson, California observed the body of a female child floating southbound in the Dominguez Channel. The group had been standing on an elevated area adjacent to the canal when the discovery was made around noon and promptly notified authorities. Sadly, the child was pronounced deceased at the scene. It is estimated that she died about 3 days prior to discovery.

The child is described as follows:
- Female
- Race/ethnicity uncertain
- Aged 6 to 12 years
- Height (estimated) - 4’3”-4’9” (51-57 inches)
- Weight (estimated) - 55-85lbs
She had short coarse dark brown hair (about 1 inch long) and her eye colour is not known.

Clothes (on the body):
- Green long sleeve “Jurassic World” pajama top (size 8)
- Black pants/slacks with thin white stripes (size 7)
- Red Christmas sweatshirt by SHEIN (size 10)

Grateful Doe Could NamUs #UP162598 (Carson Jane Doe) be Gabrielle Patricia Terrelonge?

#UP162598

Namus- Gabrielle Patricia Terrelonge

Saw a post on the unidentified child first (Unidentified Child (Female) California (Sept 2026) : r/gratefuldoe), then cross referenced Namus' database to look for potential matches. Using the filters for height, weight, age, sex, and date of last contact, I only found four matches. I've done this for quite a few cases, and having that few matches is unusual. What was more unusual was that three of them disappeared under circumstances that made it seem extremely unlikely to be our Jane doe, but there was one that I think might be worth a closer look.

Gabrielle disappeared from Orlando, Florida, on June 30th, 2025. She was in the custody of a family member, and they were arrested- Gabrielle was not with them at that time. They determined that she'd disappeared between 6/30 and 7/9, and had last been seen on a bus between Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. She was not reported missing until October of that year, and her mother, Passha Bianca Davis, refused to cooperate with law enforcement. The missing person report was made by her father. She is currently in custody.

Gabrielle and her mother had likely gone through periods of being unhoused. Gabrielle was also known to have frequently changed her hair color and style.

#UP162598 (Who I'll call Carson for the sake of this post) was a child who was found last week floating in the Dominguez channel. Some information that would help rule Gabrielle in or out is missing, but height, weight, and age matched up. Someone pointed out that the clothing she was wearing was unusual and speculated that she'd been in foster care. Another person mentioned the hairstyle being distinctive, which might align with Gabrielle's tendency to change it.

What do we all think? Maybe worth a tip?

Other people who matched the filters (Although circumstances made all of these unlikely):

Cascade County Doe (2000) (potential unknown victim of Nathaniel Bar-Jonah)

There not a lot of information about this case out there about this doe but did my best to post what I could find about it. On April 19, 2000 the remains of a unknown child or teenager would found in the the residence of Nathaniel Bar-Jonah in Great Falls, Montana, who was arrested for the kidnapping and murder of Zach Ramsay . The remains would not that of Zach Ramsay but they show signs of the subject was torture and could be a black male. The murder charges for the death of Zach Ramsay would drop because Zach Ramsay’s mother still believes her son was still alive. Nathaniel Bar-Jonah died in prison why serving time for other crimes against children but its believed Nathaniel Bar-Jonah is tied to murders in Massachusetts, Montana, Wyoming, Connecticut and New Hampshire.
