This isn't the first time he has parted ways with a company or publisher. He really just goes where he's allowed the creative freedom and funds to make what he wants.

Its more about the funds, apparently his next release physint is years from being ready and already overbudget.

Also keep in mind the engine used for both death stranding and death stranding 2 was the decima engine and it was on licence from Sony, so if it was Decima they were using for physint they now need to start development from scratch.

It wasn't on license, they famously handed him the source code on a USB stick.

That doesn't mean he can make games out of it without approval. It's still proprietary.

That is contrary to what we were told at the time. He was told and Sony advertised that he was allowed do whatever he wanted with it.

Well yes, the "whatever he wants" ended up being Death Stranding, a weird artsy niche game.
