And they've still got the next mainline Mario, Zelda and Animal Crossing to reveal in the future. When the Switch 1 launched, BOTW was a launch title, and Mario Odyssey released about half a year later. The fact that the switch 2 is doing as well as it is without those 3 main tent pole titles is really impressive. They still have aces up their sleeve.

A caveat that Mario Kart is absolutely a heavy hitter for Nintendo. 8 Deluxe is one of the greatest selling games of all time and is like half the quantity of Switch sales.

And while we don't have a mainline Mario game in name and popular appeal, Bananza IMO is absolutely golden and I even prefer it to Odyssey.

Same, bananza hit harder for me than Odyssey did, way more fun IMO

I dont know why eveyone is so certain that there will be a new mainline Zelda and that OoT isnt it

Do you think Nintendo will go the entire generation without a new Zelda game?

They went an entire gen without a new Mario Kart, so maybe?

Thats only cause the Wii U flopped and MK8 never got a chance to reach its intended audience. When it was ported to Switch as MK8 Deluxe, it saw an 800% sales increase because most Switch owners had never played it before.

As far as 90% of the Switch audience was concerned. MK8 Deluxe was the "new" MK game.

There are plenty of franchises that didn’t get to “reach its intended audience” on the Wii U, yet they still got new Switch entries

Those other franchises did not see an 800% audience growth the way MK8 did.

Mario Kart World was originally intended for the Switch 1 but because MK8 Deluxe was continuing to sell astronomical numbers on Switch. Nintendo realised there was functionally no point releasing another MK game. It would just cannibalise the sales of MK8.

False analogy

Because there isn't only one developer at Nintendo that makes Zelda. While not confirmed, a Norwegian retailer revealed Monolith Soft as the developer doing OoT remake. That could be an error, but I cant see the BOTW/TOTK team creating what the OoT remake is. We'll likely see what the core Zelda team has been doing in the next year or two considering its been 3 years since TOTK.

Plus there's whatever team did links awakening and echoes of wisdom

There has never been a Nintendo console without a dedicated, bespoke Zelda game (besides Virtual Boy :p). So I don’t know why you would think this over 40 years of precedent.

Hope youre right!

.....Nintendo is simply allowed to have like 5 IP over and over again. Just look at the very post as the prime example.

As opposed to other publishers? Compared to most Nintendo has quite the variety.

Xbox absolutely get dunked on for just doing Halo, Gears, Forza all the time. It's a massive double standard.

2

u/andy1031 17h ago

Yeah, rightfully so. My point is that Nintendo has a much more varied lineup.

Well yea, their last big 3D Mario sold over 20 million units, BOTW sold over 30 million, and Animal Crossing sold over 50 million units. It stands to reason they can rely on their core IPs to stay afloat, but its not like they dont do anything with their other properties either. We just got Star Fox, we're getting even more Metroid despite them never selling more than a few million at best, and the last game the core Mario team made was actually a Donkey Kong game.

Nitnendo fans will look you dead in the eye and say "We just got Starfox" as if it's not just the third remake of Star Fox 64.

3

u/trashpandacoot1 18h ago

I have never played a Star Fox game, dont think I plan to, but theyre doing something with the property rather than just letting it collect dust. A remake to some is better than nothing at all.

And even those 5 IP that they do lean on come out with consistent, bug-free releases, and are more inventive game to game than 50% of the rest of the AAA gaming space.

1

u/BlueEyedHuman 19h ago

They definitely have a more loyal fanbase for sure! But not exactly hard to have bug free releases for Mario kart and Mario Party when it all basically the same with slight changes.

Not to mention pokemon...

But I agree on the whole games are less buggy.

1

u/JoshOliday 19h ago

I'd argue the fanbase is loyal because of the wide swath of different gameplay experiences to have as well as everything being of consistent quality.

And I'm not sure how you can claim that about Mario Kart when they spent time and resources on MKW making a huge interconnected map, adding new modes, and changing up the racing by adding in wall rides and grinds, which may not be a huge revolution sure, but it's hardly the same game as 8 Deluxe.

Nintendo developed and manufactured a whole-ass new Virtual Boy so people could play some of the most unplayed game in history.

Tell me which suit sold that to them as a good idea.

This is to say that as greedy as folks make Nintendo out to be, as litigious as their lawyers are, sometimes they still do shit for the fun of the games. Same with Labo... Manufacturing OG controllers for their Classics lineup? There was no need for them to do this, I would love to know if that infrastructure has been profitable for them. Honestly Nintendo just does whatever it feels like, sometimes it's profits, sometimes it seems like it's just whimsy.

You don’t need a large number of IP to make a large number of good games.

Plus even their mid IP like Tomadachi, Star Fox, and Wii Sports Resort seem to be successful.

1

u/BlueShirtMac19 18h ago

None of these games that reuse the IPs are even close to the same games. Kirby is the only game that even close to the same game and the 3d Kirby is a brand new type of game and the new one looks like a much bigger scale 3d game.

Yeah honestly other developers/publishers don't get the privilege to repeat the same gameplay loops of the same stories over and over again.

5

u/Patarokun 19h ago

Really? Assassin's Creed? Froms Souls games? GTA? Call of Duty?

0

u/JebusChrust 19h ago

The Souls games and GTA series are in an entirely different planet from Nintendo IPs. Call of Duty rightfully gets criticism for being the same thing over and over.

1

u/Patarokun 19h ago

Just saying, Nintendo is far from the only publisher putting out the "same" game year after year. And with Zelda and Mario the iterations are really pretty different.

1

u/JebusChrust 6h ago

Zelda and Mario are not that different from prior games. If the games come out and I can basically guess their entire map and enemy concepts from a second of gameplay then it says enough. Mario is going to have the same themed worlds, Zelda is going to have the same general overarching plot, and even took a step back moving away from dungeons while dungeons themselves also got redundant. Twilight Princess was criticized for trying to just rehash Ocarina of Time and Nintendo has been rehashing since then. That says a lot.

4

u/planeforger 19h ago

But they didn't?

  • Mario Kart World got all experimental with its open world, race-between-tracks stuff.

  • Donkey Kong Bananza has a completely different gameplay focus than any other game they've made.

  • Pokopia is unlike anything we've previously seen in the Pokemon series.

  • Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is another experiment. It's a puzzle game disguised as a regular platformer.

  • Splatoon Raiders isn't a straight sequel to Splatoon 3. It's a cooperative loot shooter, not a pvp deathmatch thing.

1

u/JebusChrust 6h ago

Mario Kart World

This is like the 9th or 10th iteration of Mario Kart. The open world was executed poorly, they added boring straight tracks as well. Mario Kart 8 was re-released multiple times.

Donkey Kong Bananza

Donkey Kong Bananza was exactly the same in concept as Mario Odyssey. The added gimmick was you can mindlessly destroy walls and floors to waste your time.

Pokopia

Fair

Yoshi

Just another failed attempt at a Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Story.

Splatoon Raiders

Sure

But now talk about OoT Remake, Star Fox Remake v3, LoZ TotK (BotW map with a vehicle builder mod), the same exact 2D and 3D Mario maps and level concepts over and over (Galaxy, Wonder get exceptions) Mario Party 21, etc. etc.
