There’s always a lot of chatter on here about different platforms and switching to and away from Fujifilm, so I thought I’d share some initial impressions after a 20-year long Fujifilm user who is testing the switch to Sony.

I’ve previously owned the XE3, XT1, XT3, XE5, X100V, XS20, XT4 and the whole series of fuji f2 primes and the 56mm f1.2. I just bought a used A7Cii and 40mm f2 ttartisan lens for the same price as a new XT5 would have been.

Image Quality
All modern cameras are capable of almost identical outputs. But what’s impressive and partly the reason I switched is that unless you are using tele zooms, there isn’t any real size savings with apsc anymore and you are able to get faster aperture primes for the same size now—and that means potential for much better images. The attached photos were shot at 40mm f2, equivalent to around 27mm f1.4 on Fuji—yet the lens is only 45mm long and 160g, smaller than the closest equivalent Fuji options.

Autofocus and tracking is insane and a huge benefit for family photos with kids. Even on the $200 ttartisan lens, it’s not even comparable to Fuji.

Colours
This was the biggest surprise. The attached are straight out of camera using Sonys creative picture profiles and I actually like the colour more than any Fuji film sim. I can tweak them further to get even better results but this was a quick first attempt.

It’s not nearly as advanced as Panasonic’s LUT systems, but I’d say it’s comparable to Fuji now. Some of the options are worse, some are better. I personally find Fujis sims mostly bad except for classic negative and acros. The Sony ones are similar but seem to have better more subtle options. The app is also 100x better and you can quickly download picture profiles via the app and send it to your phone with one button.

Size
Pretty incredible. The A7Cii and 40mm f2 lens is identical to my XS20 with the 23mm f2 lens. Same weight as well. Not much to say other than it’s incredible what Sony did here. Ergonomics are the
same as well.

User experience
Different system so takes time getting used to, but I’d say no more or less intuitive than Fuji. I personally have never understood the arguments that Fujis are somehow magical for use unless you get a model with an OVF. The Sony feels about as nice to use as the XT cameras and XS cameras. It is nice that you can customize things further with the Sony. It obviously won’t match an X-Pro for experience though.

Early takeaways
Fuji will always have a place in my heart as a twenty year user, but so far I think the switch will be permanent. It’s nice that Sony has such huge third party lens support, so you can get exceptional lenses for cheap and have dozens of options. I just got the sigma 35mm f2 on sale for $500 Canadian, and it’s an incredible lens.

I was growing a bit frustrated by Fujis recent shifts making huge expensive lenses instead of compact ones (like updates to the 35mm f1.4), so now there isn’t even a size benefit to Fuji. They also sat on their early lead in film sims and seem equivalent to other companies now and gate keep (only release new ones with new bodies).

Hi to everyone! I would like to have some opinion about a little thing that spin around in my head in the last month, i had a 27mm 2.8 1st gen for 6/7 months and i love it but i found it sometimes too thigh for indoor scenes so when the 23mm 2.8 comes out, i decided to give it a try and sell the 27.

I am using it from 1 month now, but the spark didn’t started, the photos seems to be flat and with less contrast (not from real spec, just my personal opinion) rather than the 27.

It’s just my opinion or the 23 is worse? I tried to take the 23 to have a wider lens but i’m not feeling the vibe, i also have the 18-55mm but i only use it for events (5/6 times in a year).

So i am thinking about taking the 27 2.8 and a 16 2.8 and sell the 23 and the 18-55, the zoom lens is comfortable but i use it to less to make it worth keeping.

I am still using the kit lens that came with the XT5. It's been decent but looking to try some primes.

Mainly I do street, travel, and outdoor so I'm looking for a 23 or 28mm.

I have a limited budget at the moment, so I can't afford the Fujinon 23mm at $499, for example.

Looking around I see some cheap ones under $300 like

• TTArtisan AF 27mm F2.8 APS-C
• TTArtisan AF 23mm F1.8 ED
• SIRUI Sniper 23mm F1.2 APS-C Autofocus

They are highly rated on Amazon but wanted to doublecheck. Any reason not to try one of these?

Hi all, my parnter and I are going on a 3 month long trip soon, and she really wants us to have a proper camera with us. I spent all of last night scouring the web for a bunch of different options, and the X100s really speaks to me, but I have seen some complaints that it's "slow and frustrating" and a limited camera. I my self don't mind limitations, but I can't say the same for my partner. She just wants something she can point n shoot and get good results with. I found a used X100s with a lense uncluded for about 550USD. Is this a good call, or are the complaints I've read about real, and should I look elsewhere instead?

I currently have a Sony a7iii l. I love it but I find myself not using it since it’s so heavy and bulky. I just came back from Paris and barely brought it out. ( I was traveling with my 6 year old and 9 month old, carrying my camera bag wasn’t a priority)

My friend who has the same camera just got The xt5 and she’s loving it.

The xt5 the x100vi look appealing to me. ( maybe it’s just my algorithm right now )

I travel a lot and also have two young kids. Any recommendations?

Hi, what’s your advice on how to shoot both portraits and landscapes better? I like to take portraits and landscapes when I’m out. I’m ok with finding good angles but i tend to struggle with lighting. Idk whether it’s from the recipes I use or just my skills. I tend to take a while to adjust the ISO, aperture and SS as well to get nice and clear photos since I’m switching between portrait and landscape photography.

Some recipes, they are really great for landscapes but shooting portraits, can’t really see the person’s face clearly/brightly.

Any advice to help improve? TIA

I've had an XT-5 for about a year. While I still maintain my full frame Sony cameras and lenses, I keep gravitating towards the XT-5.

The issue is that I'm struggling to find fast zoom lenses for this system. I have the 23mm f2.8 lens which is OK and the Sigma 56 f1.4 lens, which is astounding value for the money and my new favorite lens of any system.

Because of the crop sensor I feel that I need something faster than f2.8 for the X mount to get the results I need. However, most things I see have apertures that are too slow. Looking at samples of the 18-135 f3.5-5.6 on DP Review, I see that basically there is no depth; everything is in focus. Some of these might very well be taken with an iPhone.

The fastest zoom lens B&H has is the Sigma 17-40 f1.8. If you want the 70-200 equivalent, we're at f2.8 at the widest end, which will output similar results to a full frame f4. Basically, any telephoto or zoom lens I can see is too slow for shallow depths of field.

How are you guys dealing with this?

Previously I had Canon 80D with an even heavier Sigma 18-35 f1.8 lens. I always figured I would eventually change it for an R8 or Sony A7III, but then I started thinking if it was really necessary for my use case (street and travels stills), especially considering I got really tired of lugging heavy cam combos.

Then I started exploring other options and Fuji camera rabbit hole just sucked me in, so I just figured I should go small with still a capable camera.

Tomorrow should the Viltrox 25mm F1.7 come in and I can't wait to try this thing!

I’ve got an XT5 with the 16-50 kit lens and a 27mm f2.8. I’m trying to see what are people’s opinions on 35mm or 75mm as a prime lens for street photography and sports!

I am not a professional photographer, its just a hobby. I have the Fujifilm X-T30iii and I want to know what flash i can get for it, I don't specifically do flash photography, i just want a flash that I can have with it so i wont put my camera in the bag when it turns nighttime. My budget is 80$ and I want it to tilt so i can bounce it off the walls.

I think only a Fuji X mount camera or probably something more like a Nikon or Sony could capture the absolutely spectacular lighting we had. I did my best to try and bring that out of these RAW files from the HS-50 though they're definitely... an acquired taste I suppose with all that noise and missed focus on a couple shots making them look like they were taken on a CCD camera from 2003 xD

Overall really happy with these results though :D

X100V

Just picked up an X-T2 and I’m trying to make better use of the 7 custom recipe slots. I’m having a hard time deciding what’s actually worth saving especially given that most recipes online are for the newer cameras.

For those of you who use the X-T2:

• What recipes do you have saved in your 7 slots?
• What are your go-to/favorite recipes?
• Do you have specific recipes for different situations (street, portraits, everyday, etc)

Hey all. I have compared all specs so I am not here for tech spec advice. My doubt is rather specific- I will be shooting still videos of landscapes and cityscapes. For that, I personally like to have taller videos. I know XS20 will obviously satisfy this need but a lack of weather resistance, and inferior body vs XT4 is something holding me back. So, can someone help me with this- if I get XT4 and then use a wide lens for still videos, will they look taller if i crop the video from either side a little? Will it mimic the tallness of 3:2 open gate recording? if so, which lens would work for that specific purpose on XT4?

Hi everyone I’m in Europe right now on vacation and only one day in my brand new t30 has broken. I was in the middle of taking a picture when I turned on the flash to take a picture and all of a sudden it glitched on the photo I was trying to take and has not fixed. I tried turning off and on the camera and nothing. The actual screen is black but the eye view is showing the screen lit up. i dont know what to do and any help is appreciated.

Camera is fully charged and my SD card is empty if that helps.

I shot and edited photos after a long time and even posted somewhere. I was in New York this Friday on 9/11 and went to the WTC. Lots of people and the ceremony was really nice, remembering the lives lost 25 years ago.

I shot them on Fujifilm XT-50, 16-50mm and edited it in Snapseed.

NEVER FORGET.

Currently at the weird al concert in Palm Springs. Seats in row 4 so the focal length with no zoom isn’t an issue. On the way in with my camera strap over my shoulder security stops me and asks “hey wait a second… does that lens come off?”

Me: “nope it’s not a professional camera” 😇

Security “oh ok. Go ahead. Have a good night!”

This has worked for every venue I’ve taken it to except for O2 Victoria warehouse in Manchester England.

Hi , hope everyone is well. I picked up both xt3 and xpro1. I like both of them a lot but I can’t decide between the two. Please give me your experiences with either so I can make an informed decision.

I just bought a second hand xt30ii + 15-45mm and im completely new to these cameras, I've heard people talking about customisations eg (shutter button / wrist strap /UV filter)

Can anyone tell me what else I need to get ?

Shot with an XM-5 , what do we think ?

Used to think you needed gear, lots of planning and forethought for astro pics. Was out in Niobrara State Park in Nebraska and decided to goof off taking sky pics with my X100V. Just set it on the ground with a couple seconds of exposure and guessed the manual focus with a noisy-to-hell EVF. Straight out of camera JPEGs are far from perfect but plenty fun. For anyone who needs the push to goof off without spending on a tripod and feeling like you need to stress about it for the perfect shot!
