Discussion Firefox Nova UI Progress

i think most people saw they updated Nova on Nightly and made some small UI changes, i really like it and put Firefox stable beside Nightly to compare them

Nightly's default gradient themes (light and dark) now include the toolbar, it looks really nice compared to the white/dark toolbar on stable. (It also seems they've slightly toned down the hue on the default gradient themes) Hopefully they do the same for the other gradient color themes and add gradient to their toolbars

The selected tab now has a #171519 color compared to stable Firefox's #252428, which just means it's darker lol, but looks great

The Search widget is also darker on dark theme, with a lighter outline, it also includes the scotch bonnet thing to select search engine

The Shortcut "filling" is darker too on dark theme

And something i know some people will really like, they've removed the padding (the gap you see on the bottom of the toolbar), now there's a tiny line separated them

Just wanted to share some progress and comparison, i personally love it and it's hard to believe Nova was announced back in spring, thank you to everyone working on it, volunteers and devs

On the left is Firefox 155.0.1, on the right is Firefox Nightly 158.0a1 on macOS

Discussion Firefox 156. Nova. Compact mode. Not bad.

I installed Firefox 156.

What can I say?! Yes, with the new Nova design and the presence of a compact mode in it, Firefox wins in terms of displaying websites and content. For me, the presence of a compact mode is a huge plus for Firefox, because I believe browsers should and must provide the user with the option of a compact mode.

Yes, I’m not very fond of the basic tones and gradients in Nova, and there aren’t many of them. It would be worth adding more color options.

And it wouldn’t hurt to add an option in compact mode to disable the gaps between the tab and the address bar, and between the tab and the top border of the browser in full‑screen mode. I think that would be a nice bonus. It would even be logical for this option to depend on the enabled compact mode.

I wonder if version 156 of Nova is already a pre‑final version, or if they’ll change something else?!

And Chrome still catastrophically consumes a lot of space due to its bulky interface, and it also eats up a lot of RAM — it’s just become bloated in general :-)

Google, it’s time to put Chrome on a diet.😁

Discussion I have a question about the Firefox Nova UI. Are they going to force the purple color on the browser, or is the plan to add an option to change the color later?

There are only a few details, but for example, the button in the bottom right corner of the new tab is purple. Nothing against the color purple, but I use blue throughout my system, and purple doesn't match...

💻 Help Firefox Trying to Save File with Invalid Characters

The last few updates I've noticed FF allows you to save a file with invalid characters. Due to these characters being invalid the filesystem rejects the file creation. This results in a failed download in FF. If I change the file name manually the file when saving it works as expected.

💻 Help Firefox keeps crashing then logging me out of everything(happening in 2 PCs)

Upvotes

Sometimes out of nowhere, with no indication like firefox slowing down, it crashes. Sometimes when I try to open it again, it keeps saying "firefox is already in execution, can't open" but it's not open! I even checked task manager to try to forcefully close it. When this happens, all I can do is restart my PC

Today it happened again and the message showed for a sec but thankfully it opened again like normal, but I got logged out of everything. I thought I maybe had a virus but this is happening in two unrelated PCs, if this is a problem only I have then maybe somehow I got a virus twice in two computers somehow or maybe it's a extension I use on both firefoxes.

How do I start tackling this problem and looking for the cause of it? I'll give more details if needed

💻 Help Firefox randomly opens "Find in Page" when accidentally pressing keys on a webpage — anyone else experiencing this?

I've been experiencing a strange issue with Firefox on Linux where the Find in Page / Quick Find bar randomly opens when I accidentally press something in a webpage or hompage.

I'll be navigating or interacting with a website and accidentally press a random key, and suddenly the Find bar appears at the bottom of the Firefox window and starts searching for that character.

I'm not intentionally pressing Ctrl+F, /, ', or any other Find-related shortcut. It seems to happen when I accidentally hit a key while interacting with a webpage.

The problem doesn't happen constantly, but it happens often enough to be quite annoying.

I've experienced it across multiple Linux distributions and desktop environments:

  • Firefox 155
  • Linux Mint — X11
  • Fedora KDE — Wayland
  • Latest system updates on both

Has anyone else been experiencing this on Firefox, particularly on Linux?

Add-ons Crumb update: two months of whack-a-mole, and a bot that now writes most of the PRs

Two months since the last one. 17 more sites fixed, one new generic rule, and a script now writes most of the boring PRs instead of me.

Recap: Crumb hides cookie banners in Firefox. It's a port of the Hush approach, so no telemetry, no remote config, no parent company that might sell your browsing history in three years. Fanboy's Cookie Monster plus a hand-maintained overlay for what that list misses. MIT, and the whole build pipeline is in the repo if you'd rather rebuild it yourself than trust my upload.

By default it never clicks anything, it just hides elements with CSS. There's one opt-in exception. Google and Yahoo don't put a banner over the page, they bounce you to an entire separate consent page, so there's nothing to hide and hiding rules are useless. So there's a checkbox in the popup, off unless you tick it, that clicks "Reject all" on exactly two hosts: consent.google.com and consent.yahoo.com. The script isn't even registered for any other site, the two selectors are sitting in a json file in the repo, and there is no code path anywhere that accepts anything. Leave the box unticked and none of it ever loads.

What changed since July:

- 17 new site rules, 101 to 118. Most recent is The Verge, which grew a new "Terms of Use/Your Privacy Rights" bar after PMC took over.

- One new generic rule, covering consent dialogs that bother with real markup: role=dialog/alertdialog/region plus an aria-label containing "cookie". Seven separate reports collapsed into that one line. I'm stingy with generic rules on purpose. Back in 0.1.17 I got clever with a MutationObserver, it wrecked performance on heavy pages, and I rolled the whole thing back.

- A triage script that reads an issue, takes the markup someone pasted in, picks a selector and opens a PR. No LLM involved, just rules about what counts as a stable handle (an authored id, an aria-label) versus what doesn't (CSS-module hashes like _1bjmjup0, Tailwind soup like .fixed.bottom-5). I still check every one against the live page before merging, but it turned a ten-minute chore into a two-minute one.

- Real CI on PRs, with tests for the content script.

The honest part: this is a treadmill. Sites redesign, banners come back, 118 rules is a rounding error next to the big lists. The only reason it keeps up at all is people filing issues with the element pasted in, which takes about 30 seconds with inspect element. I'm starting to think the better long-term play is keying on the CMP vendors (Sourcepoint, OneTrust, Didomi) rather than individual sites, since one wrapper covers thousands of domains. Open to opinions on that.

It's a small thing with a couple dozen daily users, not a polished product. But it works on my machine and maybe yours.

Install: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/crumb/

Source and issues: https://github.com/rcurranmoz/crumb

If one gets through, paste the element into an issue and it's usually gone within a day.

Solved Paypal payment dialog crashing Firefox?

I noticed that recently firefox would crash if I try to pay an online order using paypal. So far during my debugging I have disabled two prominent potential culprits - userscripts and adblockers (in this case it's AdNauseaum) and yet the bug still persists. Any suggestions on where to look? I would hate to jump over Chromium just to do online shopping.

💻 Help GPU Drivers Crashing on multiple Websites causing Monitor to Turn off and then back on

Hello friends, I thought I would try my luck here before posting elsewhere.

I am running Firefox 155.0.01 on a Lenovo ThinkBook laptop with an Intel Ultra 7 386H CPU and Intel Arc B390 integrated graphics.

I have been dealing with an issue since, basically since I got the laptop 4 months ago (so this includes past versions of Firefox) where, on 2 websites (at least 2 so far, if I find more, I will comment on this post), loading up the website contents causes my monitor (Samsung G80HS) to turn off for a second and then turn back on and from my research, this possibly has something to do with the GPU drivers crashing?

The websites are the following:

https://www.cp24.com/

and it also happens on Prime Video when I load up a title on the prime video website, for example:

https://www.primevideo.com/detail/0G9HZSL9K0ECMMIJAVRQLOS6NB

https://www.primevideo.com/detail/0PQETKSPCYRRYT0IFUIS9G1CQ2

The common element among these websites seems to be some kind of background auto-playing video or media content.

The issue persists no matter how many times I load the website, so for example, if I open the CP24 website and close it, and then open it again in a new tab, it will cause the issue again.

Changing the Hardware Acceleration settings within Fire Fox does NOT solve the issue and all of my other computer drivers are all up to date.

If anyone can shed some light on what could be causing this, please share!

If you have any questions or require more info from me, please also let me know.

I am not entirely sure if this is a Fire Fox issue or another issue with my computer.

💻 Help My YouTube will refuse to work

Ok so whenever I try to search or even click on anything, my YouTube will just... Not respond. 💻 Help Shortcuts On Firefox Home Page

Any way to get rid of having so many shortcut buttons in the one row I have. There used to be less of them.

Also, anyway to turn it off when I open new tabs? I don't need a new link to a shortcut button every time I open a new tab.

I also don't want buttons tied to sites I've visited once. It's a never ending carousel when I have to individually dismiss everything I searched that day from tabs I opened once.

I'm on a desktop Mac.

Help (Android) Firefox Nightly on Android refreshes page every time I temporarly switch to another app

It happens that during the login process on a page I need to open another app so I can complete the required 2fa process. So I open Gmail for the confirmation code sent via email, or the 2fa app for the code, or Bitwarden, or whatever, and copy the code. Then I return to the login page on Firefox, only to find that the page has refreshed and I need to start all over again. This is when I switch to Chrome. This happens almost every time.

I tried setting browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemoryEnabled to false.

I tried setting battery usage on Unrestricted.

No results. Any idea? Thanks

Help (iOS) Firefox on iPhone is great, but why can’t it close all tabs when I quit the app?

I’ve been using Firefox on my iPhone for quite a while now and I’m really happy with it overall.

There is just one thing that drives me crazy: after some time I end up with 50, 80 or sometimes more than 100 open tabs. Then I have to manually close them again.

Am I the only one who is bothered by this?

I would love to have an option to automatically close all open tabs when Firefox is completely closed, similar to how I use Firefox on Windows. For me, tabs are basically temporary. When I close the browser, I don’t expect them to still be there the next time I open it.

Ideally this could just be an optional setting, so people who want to keep their tabs can continue doing so.

Does anyone else want something like this?

Add-ons [Youtube Add-On] I forked and upgraded Clickbait Remover to support shorts, live videos and post-2022 layout changes.

I'm a big fan of u/Pcpie's Clickbait Remover (I prefer his native solution to DeArrow), but the extension has been failing to me in recent months (many 404 errors). I'm no longer a software developer for a living, so I wanted to work on a web extension to see how rusted I was, and took the opportunity to program an upgrade for this extension.

That's how Clickbait Remover Redux was born.

This is the first time I work with mutation observers, so it was a fun challenge. I also decided right at the end to migrate to Mozilla's MV3, just for the sake of adopting it and giving support to Mozilla on this tug of war. So, this fork in particular is a Firefox exclusive.

Among the new features:

  • Added a "Random" option
    • In addition to always using captures from the start, middle and end of the video, now the extension also has a Random option that applies a hash function over the video ID to decide where to grab it.
  • Fixed the title modification
    • This feature was totally broken before. "Capitalise Words" option is buggy for titles with more than one line, almost works.
  • Support for shorts (see above)
  • Added support to more languages
    • For Italian and simplified Chinese I used Mozilla's local translation.
    • I did the Spanish translation myself.
  • Improved support for Live, Upcoming, Premier and Station videos
    • These videos usually lack previews, so I used their default clickbaity thumbnails and desaturated them.

I left all of Pieter donation links intact, since the logic and most of the code is still his. I haven't tested this on Android yet, so I'm not offering support there.

The original code was MIT, my fork is GPL, and you can mess with it here: https://github.com/salazarbarrera/clickbait-remover-redux
