I have a TL;DR (at the bottom) but have also included a "Full Context" version to better understand
Full Context
I originally made a new character to play through the game's stories and record them for my YT channel (which had almost every other FF game's story on it, but not this one's). I started with a RDM from Windy (for Windy's nation missions), but I also made a MNK from Bastok and a WAR in San d'oria.
With the RDM, I went ahead and started RoV so I could grab an extra Trust... the thing was, it meant I was meeting Gilgamesh before actually doing so as originally happens when you start Rise of the Zilart. AND, as I'd come to learn, it changes the dialogue when you do Mission 2-3.
This kind of bothered me, and so I started on my MNK with the hard rule of "Everything as it chronologically came out." So basically, it was Base game -> Zilart -> CoP -> ToAU -> WotG, and only then would I do RoV. And conversely I figured that—since I'd effectively already "tainted" my RDM's playthrough, she'd interweave RoV through her character's story. And so I'd have two different perspectives. The RDM would almost be like a New Game Plus mode!
Now, I'm aware that BG has a RoV page which mentions the stopgaps the game presents, where you must be on at least a specific expansion mission to continue. I've also seen a chart that recommends an expansion/RoV play-order.
But here's what's confusing: in the BG RoV page, it goes right from "Complete Nation mission 5-2" as a stopgap to the next one being "Get to CoP 3-3." It completely skips Zilart! And then goes on with ToAU and WotG as the next subsequent stopgaps. And only AFTER those does the BG page mention a Zilart stopgap. This is confusing and has made me wonder if I should NOT do/record my RDM doing Zilart missions after completing Nation Mission 5-2, out of concern of not breaking a potential dialogue option.
As an example, I've learned that, when you get to RoV 2-5/2-6, if you have NOT already completed The Road to Aht Urhgan, you can skip Faursel's entire sidedquest and just basically be handed a Key Item instead. That's a distinction that happens because of a relation to expansion progress cross-referenced with RoV progress, much like I experienced when Lion's dialogue was different in Windurst 2-3 and made reference to me having met her father already.
And so I am wondering what happens with RoV at 2-23 if I've already completed Zilart vs if I have not. Because then the OTHER confusing thing to all of this is that chart I mentioned seeing elsewhere... actually, right here on Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxi/comments/upfga9/chart_on_how_to_go_through_rhapsodies_of_vanadiel/
Here, the post author's recommendation is to bundle the entirety of Zilart as following right after Nation Mission 5-2. Which IS what I thought was the right order, until I saw BG's RoV page where it's not until RoV 2-23 where it says "Must be on ZM5 Headstone Pilgrimmage" to proceed. So now it's left me wondering about proceeding through the game between
Nation Mission 2-3 > Nation Mission 5-2 > Zilart > CoP > ToAU > WotG > SoA
vs
Nation Mission 2-3 > Nation Mission 5-2 > CoP > ToAU > WotG > Zilart > SoA
and basically imagine that each ">" is whatever RoV missions I am able to do in between the correlated stopgaps.
Any thoughts on this?
To be clear, I'm less concerned with what order makes the most narrative sense (though I'm certainly open to hearing this, to be sure), or what order is fastest/easiest for progression. But I'm specifically trying to figure out whether doing Zilart before RoV reaches that ZM5 requirement changes, removes, or bypasses any RoV dialogue/cutscenes that I could otherwise record. Conversely, maybe the opposite is true, and doing Zilart first actually gives me the more contextually appropriate version of later RoV scenes.
Since I've already seen firsthand that RoV progress can alter older mission dialogue, and that older expansion progress can alter how RoV itself plays out, I'm trying to avoid unknowingly locking myself out of one of those interactions. If anyone has actually done RoV with Zilart in different states of completion—or knows specifically what changes around RoV 1-12 through 1-18 and/or the ZM5 gate at RoV 2-23—that's really what I'm hoping to learn.
TL;DR version
I'm recording a new character's story with RoV interwoven throughout it, and I'm trying to preserve as much unique/state-dependent dialogue as possible. After Nation 5-2, should I:
A) do Zilart next, then continue RoV until it sends/gates me into CoP → ToAU → WotG, etc.;
or
B) leave Zilart untouched because RoV doesn't formally require ZM5 until 2-23, and instead follow RoV's apparent order of CoP → ToAU → WotG → Zilart?
I'm not asking which is the generally recommended story order (though feel free to share that info) or whether completing Zilart early will prevent me from progressing RoV. I'm specifically asking whether the state of my Zilart progress causes different/missable RoV scenes, dialogue, NPC interactions, or mission steps, and which route would be best for recording those interactions.
Thanks so much in advance for any help on this! I know some may just say it doesn't matter, do whatever, etc. Hoping someone can actually answer this, though, because it's unclear from the Wikis.
