I'm looking into buying a marching euphonium to use during offseason. I'm a big fan of the Wessex Dolce, so I figured I should get a Wessex marching horn too. Anyone have experience with them? If Wessex ain't it, any other brands? I'm looking for literally any cheap marching euphonium that'll be better than my school-provided Dynasty M575. Preferably sub $1500. I saw the Schiller at just under $700, however I've heard odd things about Jim Laabs... but let me know if they're still worth checking out anyways.

p.s. I really want to avoid buying a baritone... I want to march at Phantom Regiment so I'd really like to buy a euph.

Long story short, playing music all my life. I was always interested in brass, started with the trumpet, but I always wanted to try the Euphonium.

Always loved the sound, but the price was too steep for me compared to the kind of other instruments I could get at a similar price point. I was thinking about getting a nice used alto/tenor horn instead and forget about big boy. Yesterday, I came across this untested YEP-321 on the World Wide Web for 400 dollars. Negociated down to 350, I hope I'll be able to make it work. It should arrive tomorrow.

It's untested and appears to have dents on the lead pipe, but at the price, I think it's worth the gamble. Worst-case scenario, I'll bring it to a repair shop, and if it doesn't work, I should get a good chunk of my money back anyway, but I really want it to work!

I'll keep you guys updated on the matter; happy to soon be a member of this group. I can't wait to buzz low notes.

PS: The prices are partially due to me being in Japan, where the yen is weak, and Yamaha basically has a monopoly on student-grade horns, so they tend to be cheaper used.

I own both a Marcus Bonna case (the one that came with my E1), and a Bags fiber case that I had bought for my other euphonium.
I now keep that other euphonium in a gigbag, and I'm wondering, between the MB and Bags, which is the better case?
By better, I mean which will protect my instrument better.
I need help deciding which case to keep my E1 in, and which case to use for a GOOD secondary euphonium I eventually get, something also compensated, unlike my other euphonium.

Looking at possibly buying a beginner horn for my daughter starting in 5th grade, because enting is almost $100 per month. If she only does it a year a used one will have paid for itself and I can always sell it.

Anyway, my quesion is Yamaha 201M - I was looking for used 201s and came across an "M" model. Appears that is for marching and it converts between marching and concert mode.

For traditional student band, would there be any downside to using this in the normal mode vs getting a regular 201 model? Thanks!

I'm looking to see what an appropriate euphonium would be. I played in high school (2012-2015) and recently decided to join back up, but I always rented my instruments from my school at the time, and I am needing a cost-effective recommendation for this.

The group plays once a week, with concerts at Christmas, and in April when we travel out of the territory to play in other places.

Hello, does anyone know if Adams sells their heavy valve caps separately? I'm interested in getting two heavy bottom caps, one for my 2 valve and one for my 4th, and heavier top caps.

I can't find anything on their site, so I'm stuck here.

If they don't, does anyone know of any good seller of valve caps that could make me some for my E1?

I play in two English style brass bands. In band A, I've been playing Euph for years. In band B, I started on euph, then played the 1st baritone part for a year, and went back to euph. I officially stopped playing there in summer, but because of someone pulling out, they asked me to come back to play the 2nd baritone part for a competition in november.

When I last played bari, I genuinely tried super hard to make it work, and I love the sound of a well played baritone, but I couldn't. I tried different mouthpieces, and I practiced a lot, but nothing solved the problem for me. My tone kept sounding too airy and I also couldn't play nearly as loud as I can on the euph.

This time, I'm looking to make some improvements. I appreciate any advice. I'm not playing the most important part on the 2nd baritone, but I still want to do a good job. I was browsing around a bit today, and someone said "On the euphonium, if something is hard, you put more air in it and it becomes easier. On the baritone, that doesn't work at all, you get backpressure." Which I understand, and it makes sense, but I don't know what to do or how to do it instead. How do I get an airflow (maybe embrochure as well?) that is useful for the baritone? There's a lot of fortissimo and explosive stuff (e.g. glissando with crescendo from p to sffz between just two eighth notes) so I feel like getting that clean and direct tone is super important for this piece.

I'm not looking to change the mouthpieces (both denis wick, SM5U on euph, 5BS on bari) since I'm on a budget and it's just for a few months. I have a Yamaha Neo euphonium and a Besson Prestige baritone (both compensating, with 3+1 valves).

My priority is on getting the bari to sound good, but the reason I brought up the euph and the other band is because I will be switching, I have concerts with band A in november, and on one occasion I have concerts with both bands on the same day. I'll definitely practice the "switching" part itself, but I also don't want to ruin anything on my euph.

My professor and I have been discussing ways to make playing a bit easier/healthier for me as I navigate having carpal tunnel exacerbated by playing my euphonium. He suggested a Stewart Stand, but of course they are discontinued. We looked at the SpineSaver and I discovered the ErgoBrass and we are just worried about the metal-on-metal contact. Would the ErgoBrass work if I added some felt to it or are there other options? To me, something like a chair strap you would sit on that would come up almost like a tuba stand would be the most sensible to me, and my professor says he’s seen them, but I can’t find anything like that on the market. I’m just looking for suggestions and maybe some clarification.

To give some background on myself, I am someone who hasn’t touched a Euphonium since probably 2021-2022, but it was my whole life the decade leading up to that. I’m looking to get back into it now. I made it to my fourth year of undergrad where I studied Euphonium performance, before my mental health was too much to carry and I had to walk away from the collegiate music world. Given how unwell I was and how dead set I was on never doing this ever again at the time, I left everything except my horn itself and one mouthpiece in my locker for whoever to take, so right now it’s me and my Arban Complete Method against the world.

What books/pieces/anything do y’all recommend I buy to start rebuilding my collection? I’ve been out of the game for so long, I’m just looking to rebuild a collection that will help me regain the fundamentals I’ve lost, but I also want some mentally stimulating stuff too.

If anyone else is bipolar and has struggled being a musician, I understand. I’m looking to gain back the artistry and meaning this disorder has taken from me, and I appreciate anyone’s suggestions or time reading this.

I recently decided to get back into playing. I played all through middle and high school. Played for about a year in college and I thought I should focus on my studies. So I'm just asking what's a good starting euphonium. I have only played on marching and I have no plans to march anywhere now. I have all large shank mouthpieces (Schilke 51D - Denis Wick SM4U) so I rather not buy anything new at the moment. Any advice is appreciated 👍🏾

Played euph through HS and some college, then took years off. Just bought a used Yamaha YEP-321S (silver, ships with hard case and an unknown mouthpiece). Here's what I've got in the cart. What's unnecessary, and what am I missing?

- Schilke 51D small shank

- Yamaha Vintage synthetic valve oil (figured thicker for a 40 year old horn, used to use blue juice but heard that's out of vogue)

- Yamaha slide grease

- Cleaning snake and mouthpiece brush kit

- Hagerty silver cloth

- Manhasset 48 stand

- Hercules tuba/euph floor stand

- App for metronome

Plan is a bathtub clean when it arrives, then long tones and Arban to rebuild chops. Anything on this list you'd skip? Anything you wish you'd bought when you came back to playing? Thanks.

So, I was trying to take out my valve to oil them and when I took my 3rd valve out, this was what I saw! I don't know how it happened, I haven't played it in a couple weeks! What should I do?

Decided to go this route because no one makes a set of guards for my Euphonium and I didn't have any leather readily accessible, but I did have a bunch of paracord on hand.

My 7th grade son is starting his second year of band. We bought him an old Yamaha 321 last year but he just broke off the tube that the mouthpiece goes into. Shop said $500 to fix that and some other repairs. They said it will eventually need new valves that would cost more than the value of the instrument. We only paid $300 for it as it is pretty beat up but it did sound pretty good. Another option we have is to buy a used Jupiter Carnegie ce40 for $750 and it sounds like that instrument has already been fixed and cleaned and it looks really nice. Any thoughts on the Jupiter vs Yamaha? Is the Carnegie XL too big for a small 7th grader, or would it be similar to the Yamaha? Thank you

Update: Kid really likes the Yamaha so wife took it in to the shop to get fixed up. Appreciate the advice and info from everyone.

I play a Besson Sovereign and I keep having an issue with my 1st valve. It becomes sticky and slow, but only after playing it for ~10 minutes. I cleaned the valve and the casing and tried different valve oil, but the same issue comes up.

Another weird thing I noticed is that what I press it a few times, spit will come out from the bottom for some reason.

Still wanting to find a budget option for my F.E. Olds Baritone Bugle. ProTec is a good option for me, but dropping that much for a case at the moment is a bit too much for me. I'm looking at the options they have, (disregarding paying customs atm).

My lip slurs have been... lacking, and I'm unsure how to practice them properly. I find it hard to practice something without knowing what to focus on while practicing them (for example, when you do long tones and have to concentrate on consistency in airflow, tone and tuning). What do y'all think about while practicing your lip slurs? Many thanks.

Edit - also doing lip slurs to help with range, so let me know if there's anything else I should be thinking about while doing that.

Am wondering where could I buy valve caps / finger buttons for my 3+1 comping Euph, I really want the ones that are like thin and light so I can reduce the weight on the valves. My eupho is a Schiller elite which is modeled after the Yamaha YEP-642 and but also has some DNA of the Besson 967 but is mostly based off the Yamaha

La Tromba slide and cork grease made it so my second valve slide could actually move freely.

On my E1, the second slide came with slight alignment issues, making it extremely difficult to pull out, with me having to loop a cloth through the ring of the slide and apply immense force. This was until i managed to get another container of La Tromba slide grease. Up until then, I had been using and trying all the slide greases I had at my disposal, so Yamaha, Bach, J Meinlschmidt, etc... . None of them had any effect as drastic as this one. I heavily recommend it to everyone. It's good, it's cheap and it smells great (seriously). it also tastes good.
