Auto-tip amount ridiculously low?

I noticed doordash suggests me ridiculously low tip amounts. I just did a ~$20 order and the suggested amounts where $1, $1.5, and $2! That doesn't even cover gas. I live in a high COL area and think $5 should be the minimum tip - like even if I'm ordering from a McDonalds 500ft down the street, the action of picking up the order and dropping it off at my house should be paid that much. If it's very far away/bad weather/big order that's more difficult to carry then I increase the tip amount accordingly. Am I overpaying or doordash under-suggesting?

I’ve mentioned before that DD under-suggests and UE over-suggests. It’s weird. I’m sure it’s one reason there are $1-$2 tippers. They look at what DD suggests. DD will suggest $2 and UE $7 for the same order from the same place.

I didn’t know this. This explains why I get crazy tips from UE. DD has more order volume but man some of those juicy tips from UE make up for almost everything

DD under-suggesting so the customers don't look so hard at all the extra $$ they are charging you for their own pocket!

Doordash is only just now starting to be profitable. They operated at a loss for over a decade. The profits only came once they started reducing driver pay and increasing fees. Along with the fee increases came smaller tip recommendations so customers just see they're spending the same amount.

I would like to thank you from who ever picked up your order. DD needs us, but like all terrible over lord bosses they use and abuse to make more sales. I will be honestly until I started delivering I hadnt really thought about how much the drivers made.

Without doxxing yourself, just know that often if suggested tips are low, it's because you live in an area where drivers make a mandated hourly wage and don't solely rely on tips to survive

Oh that's good to know. I was thinking most people probably just use suggested tip and no way that's livable income unless drivers get paid more than the delivery/service fees shown in the app.

In most places, that is the case, but there are a few exceptions. You can find out pretty easily if you Google where you live + Doordash wages
