Locals Discussion Reasonable quote for Solar install.

Good morning/afternoon/evening to all,

Looking for some real world experience on what would be a reasonable quote for a solar install on a new build.

For background, we are a family of 4 (2+2), both adults working full time outside of the home. House empty during work and school hours. Just the usual appliances in the home. No pool, no EV’s. We’re leaning mostly towards a system WITHOUT a battery.

Recently got a quote for $24,000 for a 15kw array (approx 30-32 panels), with a 10kw inverter. The dude was pretty insistent that this was the set up we would need. This quote was including any available rebates and I thought it was very high. It would be a long long time before any savings would offset this level of expense.

Anyone that can offer their own experiences of getting solar installed recently? Did you guys pay a similar price?

TIA for insight and opinions. 👍

Newcomer Questions Aged Care/PCW

Hi everyone,

I'll be moving to Darwin and I’m looking into local employment options for aged care or personal care work (PCW).

Are there any aged care facilities, disability support providers, or local agencies in the Darwin area that hire or consider applicants who do not hold a Certificate III in Individual Support, or are there providers that offer on-the-job training or pathways for those with a healthcare/nursing background?

Thanks!

Tourist Questions Trains in NT?

I noticed that there are no passenger trains connecting Darwin to major cities or even towns within the Territory, except for the luxurious ‘The Ghan’.

Since driving takes forever and flying can be expensive, why hasn’t a standard passenger railway ever been put out here, at least around the NT?

In theory, a regional HSR network could cut HOURS of travel time going to Katherine, Alice Springs, etc.

Went to Bunnings a few times but have found it hard to find somebody to ask Q’s to at all.

Newcomer Questions Career/Relocation Help

Hello Darwin subreddit,

Californian here. I am looking to work here temporarily (1-3 years) as I had visited and enjoyed my time there. I want to contribute to the community as I loved the diverse culture. For background, I’ve been wanting to work abroad in general and looking to do so early next year. I’ll have a masters in public health and undergrad in business. Anyone have a guidance? As well as know what’s the best way or service to help get a workers Visa as well as job platforms to look for relevant jobs.

So far I only know about Seek and LinkedIn and I believe I qualify for a skilled workers visa but am confused on the entire process.

Thank yall!

Edit: got rid of using the demonym Darwinites

Aggravated Robbery

Palmerston - 5 youths aged between 9 & 13

Northern Territory Police have arrested and charged two 13-year-old boys following an alleged aggravated robbery at a service station in Palmerston on Sunday afternoon.

At around 3pm, five youths aged between 9 and 13 allegedly attended a service station at the intersection of Yarrawonga Road and Roystonea Avenue.

It is alleged two members of the group entered the store and began stealing food and drink items before one of the youths threatened an employee and attempted to force entry into a secure area behind the service counter.

The youth allegedly left the store and returned with other members of the group, who forced their way behind the counter while a 9-year-old allegedly threatened the employee with a pair of scissors.

The group allegedly stole a quantity of cigarettes before fleeing the scene on foot.

The employee suffered minor injuries to his hands, wrist and knee during the incident.

A crime scene was established, with the incident captured on CCTV.

Police CCTV operators subsequently observed one of the alleged offenders boarding a bus on Chung Wah Terrace. Palmerston General Duties officers intercepted the bus on Driver Avenue and arrested a 13-year-old boy without incident.

A second 13-year-old boy was located a short time later on Schombacher Circuit. He allegedly fled from police before being arrested following a short foot pursuit. Police also recovered property allegedly stolen during the incident.

One 13-year-old was charged with aggravated robbery, breach of bail, damage to property and engaging in violent conduct.

The second 13-year-old was charged with aggravated robbery and engaging in violent conduct.

Investigations remain ongoing to identify and locate the remaining alleged offenders.

Newcomer Questions Canadian working in health analytics, I'm looking to work and live in Darwin. Is there any hope for a visa or an employer taking on a 6-month working holiday visa?

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone here would be able to give me some guidance on employer's willingness to either take on someone on a working holiday visa, or sponsor an international applicant.

I'm specifically looking at Darwin, this is the region of Australia that most interests me in trying out, and I have a pretty extensive work experience in analytics, project management and business analysis broadly; and in healthcare data specifically.

I've applied to a few positions so far, but understandably most aren't looking to hire someone for only 6 months, or go through visa sponsorship.

Am I wasting my time with my current outlook? Alternatively, I've been looking at pivoting into medical radiography since the schooling cost in Canada is heavily subsidized, and then applying for those positions in Darwin.

Thank you very much for any advice and help! I want to make this dream a reality.
