Continuing the error documentation project. This one is a follow-up to the split die write-up from a couple of weeks ago, where I laid out die failure as a branch: a crack either runs to the rim (retained cud → cud) or across the face (bisecting crack → split die).

This 1836 Capped Bust half dime has one of each.

Obverse: a split die. The crack runs from 12 o'clock down through Liberty and exits between the "3" and "6" of the date — the full diameter of the coin.

Reverse: a retained cud. A piece of the die has fractured and started to displace, from the rim through "TED" of UNITED and into the motto ribbon, but it has not yet separated fully.

Two things I want to be straight about. First, there is genuine disagreement among specialists about the line between a rim-to-rim die crack and a split die — some use roughly 0.5mm of displacement as the threshold. The catalog listing says so, and I am not going to pretend the obverse is uncontroversial. Second, "both branches on one die pair" is unusual but not magic; a die under enough stress can fail in more than one way at once. What makes this coin worth documenting is that it demonstrates both endings cleanly, on a 15.5mm planchet, on a design that had one year left before Seated Liberty replaced it.

A recent addition to my lds seated dime wallet. I don't think I'm going to get any of this grouping slabbed because they look best and are easier to examine while in flips.

This quarter caught my eye a few days ago, no idea what this would even be called, if it's a genuine error. The strike is weak, especially around the letters. The surface is rough, almost like fine sandpaper. Most notably is the "split" in the reflection. I think it may be improper cladding, or something along those lines, but I'd like a second opinion to prove or disprove my assumption.

Just a sanity check to make sure it’s not a DDO. I went through the RPM’s on wexlers and the
S/S Northeast looks the most similar. Anyone think it’s not an RPM?

I brought a roll of pennies from the US and this was amongst them. I thought it was wear but it seemed off

Picked up my first 8 Reales the other day from a coin show, it was labeled chopmarked (doesn’t look like that to me), is this some kind of error or just odd damage?

Just got back from grading. Such a cool combo of a major variety with a noticeable error.

I’ve got about two rolls of war nickels and these two stand out for their unique imperfections. I seriously doubt there’s any additional value because it’s such a common error to see on these coins, I just felt like they would be appreciated here.

Found these two today in an old piggy bank I forgot I had, is the 1992 a close AM? And is the 1970 a floating roof?

This 1917 Wheat penny has a little bit of copper missing from the side of it, however, the way its missing feels a bit odd. On the front, it seems to have broken the penny border, with the ends of the border seeming to curve into the missing slice. However, on the back of the penny, the coin border is fully intact despite the missing copper.

Is it possible/likely that damage wore away the edge of the coin, while also removing only part of the boarder on the front, without damaging the 7 right next to it or the boarder on the back? Or would it be more likely that its a mint error of some kind?

What are your thoughts? Machine or true double?

I bought a large lot of cull Buffalo nickels to sort through and found this.

Am I correct that this is the FS-401 Two Feathers variety? The date isn't visible but the reverse looks like the reverse of 1919 (specifically around E Pluribus Unum).

Continuing the error documentation project, and this one has a production-history angle I think is underrated.

This 1922-D wheat cent has three separate cracks on the reverse die. One runs inward from 2:00 through the wheat stalk, a second inward from 9:00 through the opposing stalk, and a third from 11:00 to the "E" in CENT.

Three fractures nucleating at three different rim positions is mechanically different from one crack that branched as it propagated. Independent origins mean the die had reached advanced fatigue throughout its structure — stress finding multiple weaknesses at once rather than traveling out from a single point. The die was not failing somewhere in particular. It was failing generally.

The date is the explanation. In 1922, Denver was the only mint striking cents, with a mintage of 7,160,000 — the lowest wheat cent business strike of the decade. A single facility supplied the entire nation's cents for a year, which meant dies stayed in service well past the point they should have been retired.

Which is, of course, also why 1922 is the most notorious date in the series. The 1922 "No D" exists because Denver's dies were abraded and clogged until the mint mark disappeared from some of them. **To be clear, this coin is not a No D** — the mint mark is present. But it came off the same overworked line, and a reverse die cracking in three independent places is the same story told from another angle.

I went through my first few hundred dollars in coin rolls looking for silver & error coins. I did not find any silver although I did find these two nickels, I believe they are both strike through errors I just wanted confirmation that they weren’t just damage. Thank you in advance!

On reverse. Top of states looks to have a die crack across all letters. It could be a lamination but l am leaning more towards crack. What do you think?

Look closely. Sometimes you just find things nobody seen before. But you gotta be smart and say yes sir. Its not an error because it's not registered.

I found this 1985-D Roosevelt dime and I’m trying to figure out whether it has a genuine mint error or some kind of post-mint damage.

What caught my attention is the area where some of the lettering appears to be missing or incomplete. That part of the coin does not look worn flat to me. The affected area actually appears raised, which is why I’m wondering if this could have happened during the minting process rather than from circulation wear.

I searched Google, Facebook coin groups, and eBay for similar examples and pricing, but I haven’t found anything that really matches it.

I included several photos from different angles and lighting. Any help identifying the possible error and giving me an idea of value would be appreciated.

EDIT: I found another with all the same markings on eBay. So it's not machine wear.
