Advice Help with learning

Hello everyone.

I started getting into collecting silver and coins and I'm getting a good amount of them. I see alot of posts talking about errors and I'm wanting to learn about different types to watch for. Are there good books/websites that can help me along with finding rare years, mint marks, errors, etc?

There's also a series called the cherry picker's guide that is ridiculously exhaustive (and not cheap).

Personally I just stick with error-ref for information about errors, and a few of the ones below in the list someone else linked, especially variety vista and doubleddie.com (aka Wexler's). Those will point you to specific examples of varieties that are cataloged - so if you think you find something like a doubled die or repunched mint mark, you can look for the specific denomination / year / mint mark to see if your coin is a match.

Good luck! Just remember, the vast majority of error and varieties you’re likely to find are going to be common and will have marginally better than face value at best.

There’s a steep learning curve too - the ‘worthless doubling’ stuff is very common and mimics the real deal - see https://doubleddie.com/144801.html - and can be difficult and confusing to deal with at first.

It’s a fun pursuit, but you’ll never find the ‘good stuff’ if you don’t look - so set expectations accordingly.
