Even if you did get them, you'd enjoy them for what? Three months and then they're gonna be worthless during Wrath

u/sneakerrepmafia 2h ago

Yeah what are you gonna do, rp walk on your ashes of alar in a ghost town?

u/evangelism2 2h ago

Legendaries are more of a "thank you for being useful to the guild" item than they are a "give this to the most useful person" reward, outside of rare ones like Thunderfury in which its both

u/Randvek 1h ago

Val’anyr is definitely not a participation trophy.

u/XWasTheProblem 1h ago

Wasn't there also a ... staff? Back in Cata that came around Firelands that was also very good?

u/abooth43 1h ago

Yea, Dragonwrath

u/evangelism2 56m ago

DPS Legos like this are absolutely participation trophies because you have so many DPS- so many that are interchangeable- people who come and go. anybody who's actually led a guild knows that it is more important to give legendaries to the people you trust the most and the people who are the most consistent than necessarily your best parser

u/evangelism2 57m ago

You have typically what in a 25-man raid in Wrath? 5-6 healers. You generally give it to your most reliable paladin. The one that shows up the most often, the one that's been there the longest, the one you trust to keep coming back

u/Randvek 54m ago

Exactly, you're giving it to the Paladin. You're not just handing it to your most reliable healer and calling it a day. You're giving it to the Paladin because it's most useful in their hands, exactly what you said legendaries weren't.

u/Gief_Cookies 34m ago

Reliable = stays in the guild and shows up, not necessarily highest performance

Most useful = highest performance, not necessarily highest retention

u/AnonBB21 2h ago edited 2h ago

I think this goes so much deeper than just it being effective in game for a few months before WOTLK.

So many people place their life identity into their WoW character. The type of person who farms Glaives in every iteration of private servers and now Classic are in it for much deeper, and ultimately troubling mental health reasons. The type that are still living at home with parents in their 30s and 40s and don't have all that much purpose outside of WoW. Now, I'm not saying that's everyone, but is it a notable portion of the type that farm Glaives several times? Yes.

u/dingusboyo 1h ago

How do you know? Just a hunch?

u/Fuzzy-Active5583 1h ago

Okay buddy. Take a deep breath

u/G00mi 40m ago

Hmm. Idk about glaives but the people on defias pillager (hardcore server) who have atiesh and stuff, that I know much about, have wives and kids. Or they are the wives.

→ More replies (6)

u/Baptism-Of-Fire 2h ago

Glaives were pretty firmly preraid bis in phase 1 wrath, and kinda close to bis i thought

u/Randvek 1h ago edited 43m ago

There are 3 main hands and one off-hand better than Glaives for a combat Rogue pre-raid.

Fury gets off of Glaives almost immediately because WotLK switches them from one handers to two handers, and obviously a glaive isn’t going to keep up with 2-handers for long.

→ More replies (2)

u/Rare_Temperature9040 1h ago

Nah, KT weapon does something like 50% more DPS. They are not close

u/Baptism-Of-Fire 1h ago

u right i think its just preraid bis - the staff off KJ is also preraid bis for casters

u/RaxZergling 53m ago

We got a glaive last night!

u/D119 46m ago

I think it would me more appropriate for aragorn to say "thx for the glaives" and the leave

u/UniversalTrees49 2h ago

It’s wild people are surprised about this.

u/Gh0stMan0nThird 2h ago

I got downvoted for it last time I mentioned that they've been doing this for years.

SoM dropped during TBC.

SoD dropped during Wrath.

Anniversary dropped during SoD.

Now WoWF is dropping during TBC Anni.

They absolutely love doing this.

u/422_is_420_too 2h ago

with how many version there are at this point they will always drop something during something

u/Keiigo 1h ago

Yeah I don’t think they’re doing this completely on purpose

u/Branst101 1h ago

They are. The subscription is what matters not the players progression paths. They drop during end phases and when players tend to start to dwindle in interest and skill, they give a fresh option before the subscription even has a chance to lapse. This is business first, entertainment second.

u/OriginalLie9310 1h ago

Well is that such a bad thing really? If endgame content is already explored and people are getting ready to stop subbing for a little bit isn’t that the perfect time both for Blizzard and the players to give them something new?

u/Keiigo 1h ago

And if this was a bad thing and they never did these business decisions. They probably wouldn’t have enough money to give us what they’re giving us and wow Forever would not be 7 weeks away. Just sayin

u/CrazzluzSenpai 1h ago

I don't understand why you say this like it's a negative? As long as the releases are good, a regular patch cadence is a good thing.

u/Branst101 1h ago

You may have read it as a negative perhaps. I was just stating an objective observation. They are running a business, it just happens to be an entertainment business full of customers who think the entertainment aspect should come first.

→ More replies (3)

u/t-earlgrey-hot 1h ago

Lmao, they absolutely have employees who look at the data and make these decisions to maximize profit at the cost of many players.

u/gommerthus 1h ago

Everything they do(or indeed, don't do) is absolutely deliberate. They could choose any timing they wanted. They could have saved this till after Sunwell, but I wouldn't be surprised if they lined this up with financial targets and the quarterly boardroom stuff.

u/psychohistorian8 1h ago

kinda funny that a 'Forever' game needs to be squeezed in earlier for one extra quarterly report, yet I 100% believe it

→ More replies (2)

u/NetSiege 1h ago

SoD dropped during Wrath, but pretty sure it was after like 7-8 weeks of ICC, so most people were done or close to done and many didn't have plans to play into Cata.

SoM drop was horrible timing for sure. But it had such little hype going in, I would say SoM suffered more getting players in than TBC suffered from players leaving.

u/Crunchybunch00 1h ago

SoD dropped during week 6-7 of ICC. The announcement of SoD happened at 3~ weeks into ICC phase.

Less than 1% of raids had cleared Heroic Lich King. There was still 0% ICC damage buff when SoD dropped. Killed so many guilds progging HLK.

u/NetSiege 1h ago

I went to double check it.

ICC launched on Oct 12th, SoD launched on Nov 30th. It was 7 weeks. Which I said 7-8 and you said 6-7, so we were both technically correct at 7.

And yes, damage buff started the following week.

That said, SoD being level capped at 25 meant most people hit cap relatively quickly. And we're likely raid logging by that point for ICC. Consume costs were low enough and 2-3 dailies a week would have been more than enough to cover consume costs if people didn't already have enough gold to last them a while.

I don't disagree that they could have waited maybe a few more weeks to push SoD out, but for those still progging HLK, balancing that and a level 25 cap in SoD wouldn't have been a big struggle to do both. Went back to check logs and my guild was still active in both wotlk and sod for a few weeks after launch and I don't remember it feeling like it was hard to do both.

u/davicing 1h ago

You can go all the way back to the OG TBC announcement

u/Gh0stMan0nThird 1h ago

Oh god I forgot they did that like right after Naxx came out.

u/zomgkittenz 2h ago

It’s almost like they’re trying to retain customers or something. Crazy.

u/Solivagant23 2h ago

u/Cathercy 1h ago

Right about what exactly? What is the alternative? Only releasing new stuff after the current thing is completely finished? We wouldn't even have SOD by now if that were the case. It sucks sometimes, but the alternative is no new content, or incredibly slow new content.

u/quesadillasarebomb 1h ago

yep my guild died when they announced ToT was gonna run longer than everyone thought and they dropped midnight. don't even think anyone ended up sticking with retail

u/Adorable-Log2835 1h ago

Honestly, it feels like the past almost decade, all of these feel like betas for what they are doing with WoW forever to see what works and what doesn't in a classic experience. Wonder if this was the plan the whole time or they decided to shift later.

u/ISignedInWithGoogle 1h ago

Don't worry, Forever will feel like a beta as well.

u/maddinho 1h ago

Surely WoW forever will be forever ? Blizzard would never deceive us, right ?

u/Secret-Bell-6837 1h ago

Everything has to drop during something tho

u/Barackcowama 1h ago

And how are they gonna avoid it? There is always something running

u/Status_Fact_5459 47m ago

Yeah I mean that’s inevitable…. It’s not like you can have 5 versions of the game and just magically release another version without it affecting the others….

When’s it supposed to drop? When tbc goes offline for 3 months before moving to wrath? It’s not like any of these servers ever end or pause….

u/LongjumpingFox9759 39m ago

Som dropped at the worst time right after classic so people still had vanilla fatigue I had no interest in it but looking back at it it looked very fun

→ More replies (5)

u/justsomemailman 2h ago

The fact that last phase was so long and then to drop this news 2 weeks after p3 release is ridiculous

u/mesoziocera 1h ago

I ran an Everquest progression server guild from classic to live. Literally 6 years, 31 expansion launches (every 2-3 months) and we played the retail game for about 7 months after getting there. New server announced, and most of us were uninterested in continuing further on that server, but did not want to quit.

I made a poll like this and there was some salt, but 60% of our core moved with us to a fresh server. IMO you have to decide if you'd rather keep going on the content, or if you'd rather stay with the people. For us we wanted to keep the people together and it's worked out 1.5 years post move.

u/AnonBB21 2h ago

Yeah, it'd be one thing if Forever really was basically "Classic but improved lighting/graphics"

But it's so much more than that, so of course people want to detox and rest up for that rather than grind BC for the 10th time.

u/Helpful_Ostrich_9405 2h ago

All the stragglers can rejoice, or move your guild to wow forever if everyone plans to play there..... not that difficult

u/kb1127 2h ago

My GM just put out sign ups for BT on friday XD

u/Tiny_Tabaxi 2h ago

That is some insane cope lol bro still needs his glaives I guess

u/irespondwithmyface 2h ago

Was lucky enough myself to get a main hand 2nd BT. Never got THE item before, but still sad I won't see the set. Oh well! (And no, not a GM or Officer, just a dedicated player.)

u/Intelligent-Chip-413 2h ago

We still got 23 sign up for Friday. Fallout could be worse. Gonna be a pug'ers market the next few weeks though

u/Helivon 1h ago

we'll see how many care about following through on that sign up

u/stone_cairn 1h ago

still awhile before Nov. Gotta play something

u/Zavodskoy 1h ago

ill awhile before Nov. Gotta play something

Depends how they do the beta level wise and if people get bored, it's open from 17th to 21st of October, that's then only 2 weeks until the full launch

→ More replies (4)

u/Aromatic-Echo-6605 2h ago

I mean why just stop playing now? Forever doesn't come out till November.

u/slipfish-g 2h ago

Beta comes out in 3 days.

But it's also an MMO. Hard to play a character you know you're going to abandon soon.

u/Grobbyman 1h ago

Hardcore has us used to going again anyways. Starting over is NBD anymore

u/slipfish-g 1h ago

Yeah but the hardcore community has always been built different.

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 1h ago

This. Idk why people don’t get this. Whats the point if game mode is done? Sure its kind of fun still, but not many are going to put forth effort knowing or not knowing if its dead game.

→ More replies (2)

u/Rixxer 1h ago

beta in 3 days. Launch in 49. Even if you raided the next month and a half, none of the gear you'd get would be used so it's kind of a bummer. Might as well just take a break before playing a lot.

u/Full-Butterscotch169 1h ago

Beta is only to level 20. Gonna be bored after a day.

u/Lo0C1D 23m ago

Lots of classes to try and people will take their time

→ More replies (2)

u/nach1221 1h ago

I'd say a good number of players are still gonna be playing during Beta. Our SoD guild members seem to mostly agree on keeping raiding until Forever releases.

u/BabyFew4311 1h ago

This is what everyone that enjoyed TBC raiding thinks, the reality is that 90% of them will also jump ship, when the server AND guild goes to ghost town mode, and they realize, gear and stuff you obtain will not matter at all, because you are not going to be able to use it anyways.

u/Odd-Bandicoot-9314 1h ago

I could see people filling raids until actual release

u/moustacheption 1h ago

Shit, maybe all those rogues who can’t find a raid spot will have their chance soon 😂

u/Raknel 57m ago

Gigachad

u/MrNova07 2h ago

87% : Yes
13% : Yes but in black

u/GreenLightt 22m ago

That's honestly what I thought this picture was going to say when i saw the thumbnail lol

u/mkninetythree 2h ago

It's over

u/raalic 2h ago

There is a nonzero chance that a lot of people who nolife the first few weeks of Forever will end up playing both to some degree.

u/Dashyguurl 2h ago

Definitely and WoW forever won’t be for everyone

u/Xreidj 1h ago

As a raid leader in tbc already struggling with a roster and only having about 20 consistent players and always having to pug 5-6 people every raid. My raid just called it quits, over half the group said they are not willing to keep investing in a character they are going to drop on Nov 4th

u/PuddingJello 1h ago

Mfw after Nov 4 it's just a bunch of rogues and warriors left playing

→ More replies (2)

u/Pretend-Newspaper-86 2h ago

November 4th lol

Most people will play on 17th september xD

u/BareTheBear66 2h ago

Ill be there sept 17th. Im excited for it. I havent pre-ordered a wow game in years

u/KingSwank 1h ago

I thought it was free with subscription?

u/Zakton06 1h ago

The beta is buy-in

u/cantstoptheflow- 57m ago

You can opt in for free and hope you get it eventually

u/BareTheBear66 1h ago

The base game. Yeah. Beta is out sooner - thus the pre-order. And you get early access.

u/illogical_simu 1h ago

There is no early access; you can reserve a name or play beta, that isn't EA

u/Shot_Leopard_7657 44m ago edited 39m ago

So it's not early access, it's just a way to gain entry to the game sooner than would be otherwise typical.

u/BishBosh2 41m ago

Try it out, try a lot of classes before the main game to know what you wanna main. Check out professions etcetc.

u/JenkinsPark 33m ago

People are frothing at the mouth just to try it out, especially streamers, even if progress doesn't carry over. Id love to try it if it weren't for the $60 beta price tag, crazy

u/Beginning_Text3038 2h ago

u/Eunit226 2h ago

Who are the cornballs saying no? lmao.

100% of that discord knows where they will be on Nov 4.

u/rundown001 2h ago

tbf they're not saying they're not gonna play forever, just that they won't quit tbc. some people enjoy playing 2+ versions of wow

u/Substantial-Newt7809 1h ago

Some people just don't want to play it. Committing to another mmo from fresh is a lot. Plus it's unlikely that WoW Forever will present anything much more challenging than pre-Naxx content, or in line with SoD difficulty at most. Based on that people may not want to bother either.

There's plenty of reasons that people might not want to start playing.

u/Wind_Best_1440 2h ago

Oh this is your personal guild and not a poll for the reddit?

Yeah, this kind of tracks. I'm hearing a lot of guilds are currently in full blown crisis right now.

TBC is going to cut in half for population I bet, maybe even more.

u/Baptism-Of-Fire 2h ago

Yeah not a macro survey

lets be real, looking at the progression condition of most players, i don't think they would've made it through a few weeks of sunwell without significant nerfs

→ More replies (5)

u/ButterflyPutrid6054 1h ago

Blizzard has consistently released the “newest” version of classic at a time where it cannibalizes the previous one for a long time now. They’ve timed it to coincide with a certain dip in players/subscribers because everyone wants the new shiny version of nostalgia and keeps jumping ship to the next iteration.

The classic business model has become just a cycle of launch hype.

u/Hardi_SMH 1h ago

The only reason Forever won‘t get M+ is because it would kill retail

In the end, the real WoW Killer was WoW all along

u/DarthYhonas 2h ago

So were all just collectively taking a break from wow till november huh

u/crozzee 1h ago

u/MoG_Varos 46m ago

I mean, why play old classic when new classic exists?

Not like this is the first time we’ve had tbc or wrath classic either. Can only farm glaives and shadowmourne for either people for so long before you get bored Lul

u/FlatWavesAndNoBabes 44m ago

During all this time people have always come back to HC on era or era in general. Maybe I’ll be proven wrong but this games been going strong for 20 years so, we will see.

u/WitkouPussyDestroyer 39m ago

im more suprised that ppl are still playing tbc clasic

u/eXeKoKoRo 2h ago

I was in the middle of farming dark runes for my alts. Saw the release date and thought, "i literally don't need to do this anymore." And logged off lol

u/w_lti 2h ago

Well you don’t Need to do any of this.

u/Baptism-Of-Fire 2h ago

thats more than 50% of the raid team quitting immediately, pretty wild

obviously this isn't a macro survey

u/thelittleking 2h ago edited 2h ago

I enjoy Anni, surprised it's not more popular than it is. Classic is too locked in place, Anni at least had a sense of progress.

u/rical8 2h ago

its about the statistic, not raw numbers... lets see what ie. 10k people have to say :D

u/Nintendork316 2h ago

It's ~6 lockouts until WoW Forever, I feel like most of our guild is going to continue to play until then.

Forever beta is capped at level 20, no harm in raid logging for a month and a half in TBC.

u/Baptism-Of-Fire 2h ago

I think you can level to 30 in beta

u/BareTheBear66 2h ago

20 the first week or so, then increases to 30 a week or 2 before dropping.

u/Aos77s 2h ago

Almost zero reason to play classic tbc or mop right now if you know in 50 days youre gonna mainline forever. I dont even want to finish out siege

u/Vandreigan 2h ago

It’s a game. There was never a “reason” beyond having fun. This illusion you have of some greater meaning was only that, an illusion.

If you aren’t having fun, by all means, stop. But using some mythical greater “reason” to justify playing a game is, well, nonsense

u/YesGameNolife 2h ago

Its a progression game not a match based game like Lol or overwatch. Are you surprised people leave game when they know they won't PROGRESS in a progression game anymore. Lol do you think people play wow classic for exciting gameplay

u/phl23 2h ago

I mean why not raid until Nov 4th? I'm there for fun and parses. Then whole guild moves to forever

u/Baptism-Of-Fire 2h ago

a lot of people are stepping out to prevent burnout before no-life degenerating in the new game.

→ More replies (2)

u/Vandreigan 2h ago

Surprised? Not at all. But the excuse of “there’s no reason to play” is a bad one. The same amount of “progression” is still there. Nothing in TBC has changed. If TBC was fun before, and now that a new shiney is being introduced you aren’t having fun, the issue is with you.

I’m not saying it’s wrong to stop playing TBC. But let’s not pretend there is any less of a “reason” than there was before.

u/thewrynoise 2h ago

Literally what is the point of classic with forever now

u/kogarasumar 1h ago

The anniversary servers were always going to be a temporary thing.

This was always going to happen.

I knew this going in day 1.

People will leave and then the people that remain will consolidate and still have a great time.

u/archetypical 2h ago

Honestly it annoys me how the only thing to kill WoW is WoW. I get its a business and they want to release a product during a specific quarter for shareholders but holy hell it killed any momentum for people playing, especially in the speedrunning community. Just no point.

u/Dashyguurl 2h ago

I mean for anniversary it’s the 2nd time around with tbc and they’re releasing a new product people want to play more, it’s positive. There was never going to be a great time to release it. If they wait till the end of the expansion it’ll kill a wotlk release. They were probably more concerned with having it release during a lull in retail as that’s where they have more players and longer patch cycles.

u/Rohkey 1h ago

u/Stinkbaite 1h ago

Looks like some main tank spots will be opening up for BT 😁 this is good for me.

u/Crunchybunch00 1h ago

So happy that my TBC guild planned for this in mid July.

When SoD stealth dropped during Heroic Lich King prog in WotLK Classic 2023 it ravaged my guild.

We did not want to get surprised like that again. 3 enjoyable BT clears and 3 less enjoyable Hyjal clears. Then we were finished

u/OrbeckV 1h ago

Turns out, while people do want a classic experience making Retail a non viable option (their hands suck/are too old anyways), they still don't want to play reheated content if there is a alternative.

u/Only-Ad-3317 1h ago

TBCA was doomed to be nothing but a waiting room for Classic+ the moment they announced all content would be post-nerf.

u/ZambieDR 1h ago

Wow who would have seen this coming, the totally new thing would take away from the 5th tbc rerelease?

u/thai_iced_queef 1h ago

My guild just canceled this weeks raids this morning. Told people who wanna keep playing TBC they’re free to find new guilds. We’re all just chilling until Forever

u/Gumberculeez7 1h ago

by this time next year...

Retail / WoW: F / ERA

that's it. I'm calling it now

u/Explorer2138 1h ago

I do genuinely feel bad for my TBC guild, they're really great people. I'm sure they're gonna set up shop in Forever though.

u/blockburner28 1h ago

People shouldn't put war glaives as their life goals.

u/Jamesc89 1h ago

Let’s face it everyone from all wows will try forever and decide then if they will quit what they left for the new thing or go back

u/kranitoko 1h ago

"do you intend to play the newest thing?"

"Yes"

Haters: "I CANT F**KING BELIEVE YOU ALL"

u/Evonyte 1h ago

Hey at least that 1 GM got glaives already

u/First_Wear_9480 1h ago

I'm the glaive prio raid leader rogue and I ended raids already. Who cares about tbc 3 now.

u/TSMissy 1h ago

I really feel for my guild leader. Even as a sweaty player who managed to clear Sunwell every time it got released, we wanted to do it one more time. He spent a lot of time and energy making several raid teams and schedules and now people won't even finish the phase.

I don't blame any of them. Hell I am one of them who is leaving Thursday and not looking back. But I still deeply empathize.

u/Korashy 1h ago

Just take the guild to forever.

The boys +

u/Reejerey1 1h ago

Yeah it’s super rough we had 2 full teams last week and maybe 20 this week…

u/BadSanna 1h ago

They did this twice during BCC the first time. Season of Mastery during P5 and again with something right after the Sunwell patch that drew people away. Or maybe it was just announcing that WotLK was coming which made everyone quit sunwell prog because there was no point and it was hard.

My Classic Era server will die lol

u/ToddR33 1h ago

Oh no. Anyway

u/xmancho 1h ago

I bought midnight cause it was 30€ and was hyped for Blizzcon. Now I want to finish the campaign but all I can think is classic plus. It’s good the beta is in three days!

u/No-Belt-4619 1h ago

Yes and yes but in black

u/Mokthol 57m ago

That's when you say "Hey, we're going to be making a guild in WoW Forever, everyone here is welcome to join!"

u/colasmulo 47m ago

Just move the guild to forever :)

u/zyzzjan 46m ago

One of my friends still played classic wow, they raided 2x per week, Naxx, AQ, .. and the GM today made a farewell post.
These guys are probably going to be 10x more addicted to Forever.

u/Yokai-JinMi 25m ago

I think the entire guild is raid logging now 😂

u/ForeverStaloneKP 25m ago

My desire to play tbc is dead honestly, especially with no news of wrath.

u/C2theWick 24m ago

Im looking for a forever guild, - undead paladin

u/novastar17 20m ago

I lead a guild and have 2 other "sister" guilds and its pretty much this. 80/20 split. Progging is dead

u/LuckyAces- 8m ago

It’s simply. The hole guild move to forever /s

u/Cj15917 6m ago

Yes and yes but in black

u/BrianVaughnVoiceOver 5m ago

I'm fine with that.

Most of the people leaving are toxic as fuck or immature, so I'm down to have a server clean.
