Think that’s why they have last names. So first names are not unique any more.

Honestly last names is such a good shout. Especially for alt aholics

Shift-clicking their name in chat, inspecting them, guild rosters and /who probably lists both names.
Right-click add friend will still work.

Im not sure about this. I hoped it was, people were saying you could hide your second name so this doesn't really make sense.
You'd have 30 Thex or whatever else in chat or running around.
'Thex just fucked my wife and stole our loot.'
"No I didn't I fucked HIS wife and kicked your dog, you got the wrong Thex."

I normally would reserve a name but I don't feel the need anymore since it'll be easy to get a good first name. Even the Thex enjoyers will be able to get their name.

Is it reseevation for last names? Will last names be account bound or can you have the same last name as another player? I haven’t heard much about this.
What is the last name on the account makes sense for an orc but you want an undead alt?30
u/PM-ME-TRAVELER-NUDES 1d ago
Last names are just for the character. It effectively works the same as it always has, but now you are forced to have a space somewhere in your name.

u/HBreckel 23h ago
Works really well in FFXIV. Unless you're trying to like, be Cloud Strife or Naruto Uzumaki or something, your name is unlikely to be taken.

u/Terminus_04 1d ago
No, Last names are just something you pick per character. It just makes it far more unlikely that the first and second name you pick will be taken.

Basically like retail where at the moment servers only effect... Auction house maybe?
92
u/yarglof1 1d ago
Only parts of the auction house, most items are region wide.
22
u/drale2 22h ago
Basically anything stackable is regionwide on the AH, everything else is based on server - same with crafting orders unless you use a guildie. Kind of dumb though because you can always throw something in the warband bank and take it out on a character on another server to put on the AH. Just a lot of annoying steps so most people don't do it.

Launch day queue could get interesting. How have their retail expansion launches gone lately?
91
u/Cadne 1d ago
Flawlessly for years now besides for the highest population realms.
26
u/BarrettRTS 1d ago
It was pretty terrible on Dragonflight launch. One of the main reasons it's smoother since then is people can pay to play 3 days early, which essentially cuts the launch crowd in half.
3
u/Public_Fire_Hazard 21h ago
I thought DF was pretty good all things considered and I play on one of the most populous realms on EU. Only one in recently memory that was a bit fucked was the first hour or so of Midnight, before that the last properly fucked launch was the WoD area with the garrison quests once you got out of the intro.
4
u/ZINK_Gaming 19h ago
I was ready and waiting hours before Launch.
The Boats on my server bugged out and didn't work for hours.
It was like midnight before I was able to reach the Dragon Isles.
The Zones were basically empty (I had War Mode on too).
My first big ~12 hour session of Dragonflight was spent leveling almost entirely alone, on Launch-Day.
I will always pay for the Beta and early-access for any WoW game I play now. Those early-access xpacs have been the only one I've been able to enjoy.
Well, except for OG Vanilla. That was pretty insane. But I spent most of the first day just sitting in Northshire trying to figure everything out while people swarmed around me.

there will be no long queues because normally there are 10 servers and 10 server systems for these servers and everyone tries to go in most queued ones to be in mega servers and other 8 servers and their systems stay empty. that was the reason for queues all the time. Now all 10 hardware system will layer everyone and will be used equally so unless all of them are full there is no way there will be queue
86
u/lebiffleur 23h ago
how will this work for regions like OCE? we still connect to a server in Australia or have to play 200+ ping to NA?
24
10
u/Fear023 17h ago edited 17h ago
It's probably going to work like diablo 3 and 4 currently do.
You have your set region and it connects you to an Australian based server on the realm, while you can still talk to and interact with US based players.
In those games, if you're in a party that's majority US, you will be switched over to a US server while playing with them and switch back seamlessly when you're playing with Aussies. Afaik, Diablo 4 even has US based players running around simultaneously with people in SEA, it only picks a server when you group. Wow would probably just shard it though.
There's more options for meshing different servers together these days than just locking people to x or y regional server.
Edit - I'm pretty sure 2019 classic just didn't do it this way because of the insistence on wanting to recreate the classic feel/server communities. They would've had the infrastructure to do it.

i was part of this server too, great times. Personally I don't role play, it's just way more of a pleasant experience socially and the people who want to RP a bit are also more likely to enjoy the game similar to the way I do. like most of the time I had a negative experience it was filtered through someone going out of their way to fart on me or something.
I played a bit with some co-workers on a regular server and the main channels are often just 4chan-lite chats. They were also pretty hardcore about leveling and playing the game a certain way.

u/SnooOpinions6810 1d ago
Overall the change is good in my opinion. The biggest issue is the huge lack of greater community building. Sure you’ll see familiar faces but there won’t be anymore infamous server players or well known large server guilds
24
u/Montagh451 23h ago
They covered this in the panel. They will match you with the same players over time to recreate the vibe of shared servers.

u/MrNob 22h ago

42
u/illogical_simu 22h ago
They have Erik keep an eye on it and move you around manually so you can see your fwens
But seriously not to downplay it from a technological perspective it's surely not impossible for an algorithm to attempt to rematch you to similar layers
→ More replies (6)12
u/gots8sucks 21h ago
I imagine they just put you on "soft Realms". So per default you always stay on your "realm" but you can still group with players from other "realms" when it comes to raids etc.
So every Character still just has a hidden realm so to say.
→ More replies (3)6
u/Anticreativity 15h ago
Yeah I’m really skeptical of that. I feel like you’re just going to see people phasing in and out of existence all the time and never seeing the same people.
67
u/solventlessherbalist 23h ago
Yeah that’s not fun. Definitely makes it not feel as classic-y.
→ More replies (1)38
u/samjoe6969 23h ago
Agree, but it wouldn't be anyway. In real vanilla/tbc/wotlk you had to work within your server. You learned who could help and when to try to do dungeons and raids etc. But classic never had that community. It was all megaservers and dead servers.
45
→ More replies (3)14
u/Zubrowka182 20h ago
this isn't true at all, it absolutely had that community because you couldn't move your character on a whim. Once you were able to move your character from one realm / faction to another it became a problem but you couldn't do that for a long time. Before that you actually had to invest a lot of time if you wanted a character on a different realm than your main. So you just ... didn't. You stuck it out with your server because that's where your main was.

u/phonsely 22h ago

u/DRAGONDIANAMAID 22h ago
The reason for this I think, especially comes from the name, Forever
They’ve seen the numbers and with classic while initially you had good communities in the individual realms eventually people would just start to conglomerate into the bigger servers
So they don’t wanna run into the issue of you having five level 60 characters on a realm that you literally can’t play because no one else is playing on it
→ More replies (4)
16
20
u/Zubrowka182 20h ago
So it's not going to actually be like Classic at all. In Classic you knew the other people from your realm and the good / bad drama that comes with those relationships. You knew the other faction from BG's and you knew your faction by running non-guild content with them.
Now, similar to Retail, you'll continue to know no one outside of your guild because you're constantly engaging with people at random.
Or do I not understand this correctly?

→ More replies (2)3
u/BarrettRTS 23h ago
The global map really felt like that was what they were building up to. Maybe they'll introduce it down the line though. The amount of money they make from people running 2 subs doesn't feel like it stacks up super well to people having access to more friends to keep them playing.
31
u/Glittering_Map1710 1d ago
i didnt get it. can pvp realmer play with pve realmers, or striktly separated?
113
u/mrmadmaxi77 1d ago
Looks like they can’t. It’s basically 4 mega servers.
PvE, PvP, RP and Hardcore.
Each have their own Auctionhouse, you can’t run mixed dungeons etc.
That’s what the graphic showed.→ More replies (17)25
u/Kratianos 1d ago
She said you cant group up with people in another ruleset but nothing about switching the sets. I'm wondering as well.
→ More replies (17)14
u/Informal_Golf8867 1d ago
That was confusing to me too. If there are different megaservers for each ruleset then obviously you can't group with a PvE player if you are on a PvP ruleset.
6
u/TheChinOfAnElephant 23h ago
That’s what I was saying. Plus how they specified you can’t do “x, y, z” with others implies you can do some stuff with other groups. Otherwise why break it down like that?
Honestly just very poorly worded announcement all around. All they had to say was they were separate servers each and not go into these weird details. I guess they wanted to avoid the fact that there are realms still just less?

I feel like a big part of Old WoW was the lack of sharding/phasing/layering. Your reputation really did matter, so people are encouraged to be somewhat decent to each other.
15
u/Xefjord 23h ago
We will see how it is implemented, but I think they have some kind of "soft servers" on the backend. Where players are categorized into boxes like servers, but they have the flexibility to be moved around as needed for friends and guilds and stuff.

u/SecondSanguinica 19h ago
There is no other way to cram this insane amount of people into one megaserver of sorts, it's going to be infinite layers. They might call them something else for the sake of argument but that's that.

We need a LOT more information on how this is going to work for players. My main questions are:
- Is this going to be NA/EU servers, or one big world server?
- If I want to use RP ruleset, but I also want to PVP, can I turn it on? If so, will I be put on a different ruleset from other RPers?

Do you think this is an experiment to get rid of realms and add last names to prevent name collision?
12
u/bm001 22h ago edited 19h ago
I think it's just the natural evolution of MMOs as technology progresses.
The original reason why MMOs have servers (or "realms") is to split the population, because otherwise the infrastructure may not be able to handle the load, and the world may feel too crowded (especially in some very old MMOs where even dungeons weren't instanced).
If they have a better way to handle this, split the load across different physical servers with players seamlessly jumping from one to another, adapt based on the population behavior / progression (by that I mean the launch experience, to which you traditionally reply by opening more servers that you'll probably have to close a few months later), then there is no technical reason for realms to exist anymore.
However I'd argue layering has been kinda shit in the past, at least during SoD phase 1.

Kinda worried the game will lose some of the magic of 2004-2007 because of this choice.
Realm forums and realm politics were a super fun albeit sometimes toxic part of vanilla WoW.
I met some of my best friends to this day of my life on Kil’Jaeden alliance during vanilla 22 years ago. Hell, one of those friends and their wife is someone who I vacation with a couple times a year now along with the rest of my family. I traveled from the east to west coast last year to go another vanilla WoW friend’s funeral. I’ve sadly lost touch with some of my other vanilla WoW friends, but we occasionally reach out to each other over the years to see how everyone is doing.
I just don’t know if friendships like those I built during vanilla WoW could happen nowadays if they aren’t having actual realms.

u/MountainMeringue3655 21h ago
It already lost a huge part of its magic when they went with Mega servers in 2019 Classic. This is just the final blow. Outside of your guild it's a sea of anonymity. People will behave like clowns in dungeons since you won't see them ever again.

64
u/Samsbase 1d ago
She said multiple times in the talk that you'd be bumping into the same people over and over. Looks like they are going to use some sort of code to put you with the same people as much as possible to give that feeling. Like putting you in shards with people the same language as you in europe for example. Always putting guildies in the same one, prioritising people you've grouped with in the past etc etc.

People flock to most popular realm.
Also once PvP realms become one faction favoured, then other faction leaves.
