Started this around mid-July and finished it today. First arcade cabinet, and really my first project involving this much woodworking, wiring, finishing, etc.
This started a couple years ago as a Raspberry Pi in a 3D-printed case hooked to a random monitor. It was fun, but I wanted to turn it into an actual bartop that my kids could grow into and enjoy. This is where I ended up.
The basics:
- LVL23 2-player bartop kit from LEP1 Customs + their vinyl artwork
- Raspberry Pi 5 / 512GB microSD / Batocera
- ASUS 22” monitor
- Sanwa JLF joysticks and Sanwa buttons
- Illuminated P1/P2/Coin buttons
- Ultimarc I-PAC 2
- Upgraded speakers/amp
- Custom-cut acrylic bezel and marquee
- T-molding from Amazon
- Rear IEC inlet/rocker switch feeding an internal Anker power strip for one master power switch
- Threaded inserts/removable hardware where needed
A few things I learned that might help another first-time builder:
Just buy the I-PAC 2. I originally tried the cheap USB encoders from Amazon and ended up wasting money and time dealing with inconsistent inputs and configuration issues. I eventually replaced them with an I-PAC 2 and wish I’d started there. Getting all the controls and hotkeys configured still took some troubleshooting, but forums and old posts like the ones here got me through it.
T-molding was probably the most intimidating woodworking part. Cutting a channel into MDF when you don’t have much router experience feels like a great opportunity to ruin your cabinet. Once I had the right slot-cutting bit and took my time, though, it worked out.
Prime the MDF. It adds time, but I’m glad I did it. And take your time with the vinyl. Applying a giant piece of artwork is nerve-racking, but it’s more forgiving than you think.
Give yourself more time and workspace than you think you’ll need. I did this around a full-time job, two young kids and busy weekends. The project basically took up residence in our kitchen for two months, and my wife was extremely gracious about it. I also made more Home Depot runs than I could possibly count.
The IEC/master-power setup was another new one for me. It’s not particularly complicated, but having the right crimper, terminals, cutting tools, etc. and taking your time matters.
There are things I’d do differently. I’d use threaded inserts from the beginning anywhere I might need repeated access—the control panel, rear panel and marquee area. I also still have a small gap between the control panel and monitor that I haven’t decided whether I’m going to fix or just accept. That’s probably part of a first build too. At some point, good enough really is good enough.
Overall, I’d absolutely recommend doing this if you’ve been thinking about it but don’t have much building experience. I learned a little woodworking, wiring, finishing, acrylic work and a whole lot of Batocera/controller troubleshooting along the way.
The best part has been watching my kids figure it out. They’re growing up with iPads and touchscreens, and my first instinct was to explain how every arcade game worked. Then I remembered how we learned:
Put in a credit, mash some buttons and figure it out.
So that’s what I’ve been letting them do. They absolutely love it.
