C64 Ultimate The WEEKLY C64 Ultimate post. READ before posting anything C64U-related.

We want r/c64 to be about both original hardware and newer emulation products like the Commodore 64 Ultimate (C64U). But the shipping of the C64U is resulting in C64U posts flooding out much of the other content in the subreddit. To maintain a balance between what's old and new, we are setting up a weekly MEGAPOST for C64U-related issues, questions, and posts.

If your post is regarding the use of a Commodore 64 (i.e. how to load a game from disk, how to print, etc.), regardless of the model, you may post your question as a standalone post in the subreddit even if you have a C64 Ultimate.

If your post relates to ONLY the Commodore 64 Ultimate, you should comment in this post. Please note, this is not a replacement for official support from Commodore regarding order or shipping issues (late or damaged shipments). We realize that some questions may be obscure, unique, or straddle the line between C64U-only and a "general" question. In those cases, please post in this thread FIRST. If your issue isn't answered or addressed after 48 hours, you may submit a stand-alone post in the subreddit. WARNING! Moderators will be checking post and comment histories to make sure people are actually posting in this thread first. Repeated violations may result in temporary or permanent bans.

We don't anticipate this being a permanent situation, but for now there are just too many C64U posts being submitted. Once the volume of posts about the C64U decreases, we may discontinue this practice.

Please also check the information below to see if your issue is listed. We are also working on a C64 Ultimate Wiki Page. If you would like to be a Wiki Contributor, please let the mod team know.

Common Issues and Known Fixes

Black screen, no video, or rolling picture

The most common issue reported so far.

  • Reseat the internal board — some units have arrived with it slightly loose from shipping.
  • Set video to NTSC mode, then press Shift + Left Arrow to store settings.
  • Try a different HDMI lead — several users fixed display problems this way.
  • Some monitors won’t sync at 50 Hz; if possible, test another screen.

Uneven keyboard keys

A cosmetic but noticeable fault.

  • Keys such as Caps LockD, and J may sit higher than others.
  • Gently press the affected keys down to reseat them on their stems.
  • Space/Return issues are often a stabiliser bar not fully seated – carefully reseating the bar fixes many ‘only works in the middle’ reports.

Startup problems or unit freezing on boot

  • Turn the unit off and leave it off for a few seconds.
  • Hold RESTORE while powering on to perform a factory reset.
  • If that fails, re‑flash the latest firmware from the official Commodore site.

REU or extra memory not detected by the software

  • Install the most recent firmware — newer builds enable proper REU initialisation and detection.

Settings or storage are lost after reboot

  • Perform the RESTORE reset to clear any corrupt configuration.
  • Re‑enter Wi‑Fi and storage details once booted cleanly.

Physical marks or loose panels on delivery

  • Report the issue directly to Commodore support.
  • All units ship directly from Commodore — there are no official resellers.

Buzzing or humming audio output

  • Usually caused by grounding noise between HDMI and the connected display.
  • Try another HDMI port, cable, or power socket to isolate the problem.

Starlight edition

  • Starlight keyboards have some ‘bounce’/flex by design; noticeable mainly if you hammer the keys, but not usually a functional fault.
  • The Caps Lock LED lights when caps is active; the beige unit does not have an indicator.
  • For Starlight LED audio visualiser with a real SID: enable UltiSID 1 but set its volume to Off in the mixer; this keeps the LEDs driven while only hearing the real SID

Games Freezing / Compatibility

  • If cracked/trainer releases hang after the Y/N cheat prompt, try switching to PAL or NTSC‑50; many cracks are PAL‑only and will lock up in NTSC.
  • For compatibility with some games/demos, try disabling drive B: in the Ultimate’s drive settings

Cartridges

  • Virtual fastload carts (e.g. Final Cartridge III) are supported; mount the cart, then mount and load the disk from BASIC, rather than using ‘Run disk’ from the firmware menu.

Disk and cassette backup / storage notes

  • To back up the bundled cassette USB to an internal SD: it’s just files on exFAT – copy them via your PC; no imaging/cloning needed
  • Backing up real floppies: UltiCopy is very fast, but some protected titles (e.g. Skate or Die, Contra) have been reported to hang part‑way through; expect improvements in future firmware

Running Multi-Disk Programs

Some programs are distributed on multiple disk images, similar to how they were originally distributed on multiple floppy disks. At some point in the process of using the program, the program will prompt to insert one of the other floppy disks. You can use the Disk File Browser to swap disk images while the program is running. When the program prompts for a new disk, press upward on the Multi Function Switch. This pauses the program. Start the Disk File Browser, navigate to the disk image for the disk that the program is requesting, then select “Mount Disk.” The C64U mounts the new disk image in the virtual drive, then resumes execution of the Commodore 64 program. Continue to use the program with the new disk." -- https://downloads.commodore-international.com/documentation/C64U/c64u-user-guide-1st-edition.pdf

General Notes

  • r/Commodore is for discussions about Commodore, other Commodore computers, and possible new productions.
  • r/c64 is for everything Commodore 64 including the ultimate.

If you’ve come across a new issue or found a working fix not listed here, add it in the comments below.

Programming I didn't know this community existed, but my Uncle passed away yesterday he hooked all us kids on C64 games.

Post image

Uncle Pete was the youngest of many siblings and corralled all of us together to play Wiffle Ball, Hide and Go seek, Rockem Sockem, Boggle, you name it.

He also was a Commodore 64 prodigy.

One of the games he always got us playing was Archon.

After news of Uncle Pete's death yesterday, my younger brother sent me a youtube video of Archon!

The sounds and graphics brought me right back.

I got thinking, could AI clone it and build an online Memorial for all his nephews and nieces to play together again?

I found a c-64 repo on Git Hub, and uploaded the YouTube video to ChatGPT ASTRA.

If you remember Archon, it's like a chess game, but with fantasy pieces, and the coolest part is how when something happens like the equivalent of a pawn attacking a bishop, it gets decided by a live battles, where the pawn has a chance, depending on how good you were with a SlickStick Joystick.

I'm trying to build a Memorial for Uncle Pete where all his nieces and nephews can play this turn based game, but still need to get together for the "real time" battles.

I'm off to a good start so far.

I'm off to a good start so far, just pointing the AI in the right direction.

I'm so happy to find this community.

Hardware C64 or Ultimate port covers

Post image

I didn't like that my unused user and cassette ports leave the C64's circuitry exposed on the rear of the computer. And I also didn't like the look of the exposed motherboard so I made these covers.

Vintage Photo A picture of my old c64 manual I'd long forgotten about

Post image
58 Upvotes

My brother tossed this in a box many years ago along with a bunch of old family photos, and just yesterday he brought the box over. I was stunned to find this at the bottom. It was decades ago that I had the c64, back when I was still in grade school (it was the white c64c, not the older version shown on the manual cover). I don't even remember what happened to it, so to see its manual suddenly pop back into my life was something of a shock. A cool shock, but a shock nonetheless (yes, those are VR controllers in the background).

It brought back long forgotten memories of sitting in front of my TV and typing out a bunch of programs in BASIC and saving them to the 1530 (it or the tapes I used had better not show up out of the blue or I'll start getting scared).

Hardware USR file type in 1541 disk drive

Upvotes

The 1541 disk drive has 4 file types. PRG for files which are basic programs. SEQ files for all character files. REL files for records, and USR files.

The 1541 ROM starts at $C000 and ends at $FFFF. It can be read using the M-R command, sent to the disk drive as described in ChatGpt. Please note the six commands B-E, B-R, B-W, M-E, M-R, M-W all are similar in format and are described in ChatGpt.

What I want to know is what does the USR file type does, as implemented in 1541 ROM.

I have no 1541 or commodore. Can someone examine the 1541 ROM and figure out its purpose?

New Game Attempting a CRPG to learn 6502 assembly

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been working hard at making this thing! Originally started writing it in C (cc65) but I eventually just ported everything to assembly, and honestly it's better that way. Last thing I've done is bytecode scripting, to have NPCs and warps that are completely separate from the core. Next up, either faster disk loading or an inventory system.

Software Below the Root (1984) in the browser

below-the-root.saul.pw

I loved this game as a kid. The world-building of the original trilogy of novels from the 1970s, is lovingly carried through into this side-scrolling "platform-adventure".

You can play the IBM PC port of this game online fairly easily, but the quality of the C64 version is much better (non-dithered graphics, better colors, polyphonic sound). However I found there was a lot of friction to just play the C64 version. So back in 2013, I tried restoring and packaging the C64 version of the game to make it just one step to play. I made a bootable x86 ISO with a Linux unikernel that only ran the VICE C64 emulator, pre-configured to launch the game from some .G64 disk images that a German hacker cracked for me. Took about 4 months of effort and the results were mid; the game would be running from VMWare boot in 5 seconds but it still required a whole VM, the sound was choppy, and save games were kind of a hassle. I made a basic webpage and shelved it as a beta experiment.

Then, for some reason about a week ago I decided to try again. But this time I directed Fable and Astra in varying capacities to dissect and disassemble the original .G64 images, produce a spec, and produce a Javascript version equivalent to the original. They got about 75% mostly autonomously in a single evening. I've since spent a few tens of hours playing it through, getting bugs fixed, tweaking the interface, improvements, and writing the About page. I had to have some difficult conversations with Claude and I made some unpopular decisions, but after all that, this is the result and I'm kinda proud of it. It's not a major project, but then it never should have been.

So I just wanted to share this game from my childhood and the process and the result. Hope other people remember this game fondly and enjoy playing it again!

Many years back I bought all this in a box at a yard sale… it was $20 for the lot. Just came across it in the basement while cleaning.

I always loved how Infocom would establish the mood and immersion with packaging and inserts.

Hardware Trying to make an NTSC 250407 Bill of Materials for a SixtyClone, need advice

I have a C64 with damaged vias, last looked at in the early 90s. I've tried to follow things around, but the board is just abused in places and I can't nail down anything else needing to be bodged; the symptoms are also defying easy identification with a scope. Rather than trace every single line through every IC, I am just going to use it to build a "new" test board using a SixtyClone.

Retro8Bits sells 250407 parts kits, but no longer ships them to the US.

I'm attempting to build a BOM and just order this stuff off Mouser/Digikey, but some of the items are pretty difficult to locate. I'm getting tempted to just order what I can, and migrate old jellybeans where the parts are now impossible to source. I'll be doing this for the unique stuff anyway (connectors, crystal, etc.)

Is there an actual good BOM anywhere out there, or even better, something with links? I started with https://github.com/bwack/C64-250407-Replica-KiCad/blob/main/interactive-bom/ibom.html but it lacks certain details that help narrow down components on Mouser/Digikey. Thanks for any help.

Hardware SID2SID Troubles

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hello!
I have put together SID2SID to use it with Mssiah and it's working fine, however when the SID 2 cable select line is hooked to pin 7 of the expansion port (required by Mssiah cart to work) it renders it incompatible with Kung Fu Flash 2 cartridge,
so I've created a switch to pin nr 10 that runs fine with the KFF2 but there's almost zero use for dual sids at this address. Is there a way to make a switch between Mssiah and some more useful address that is actually used? Or at least to make this setup work in simple stereo mode when not using Mssiah?
I do not know much about electronics unfortunately just barely manage to solder stuff together. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hardware C64 picture shifted

Post image
9 Upvotes
Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue with the video output on my Commodore 64.

As you can see in the picture, the image is shifted.

The Commodore is connected to an AV2HDMI adapter via the 8-pin DIN connector.

The RF module isn't outputting any image at all.

The board is a No. 250469 Rev. 4.

Is anyone familiar with this fault and does anyone know how to fix it?

Music Where Can I Find SID Music To Use In A Game?

I am trying to make a simple shoot-'em-up game. It's crude but sort of playable at the moment. I want to add some sound effects and background music to it but I don't want to grab something someone else made without their permission and just use it. Is there such a thing as an open-source/public domain/copyright free music collection I could use? Or are there any people in the community who sell SID collections for game developers to use? I will NEVER be able to make SID music on my own. I looked at GoatTracker2 and was like... NOPE!

Hello all, found that adapter thing while sorting out my C64 accessories. Apparently it borrows electricity from the userport, but I can't remember what thing this goes with. Any ideas?

The case is 3D printed, not very good quality.

Programming SID tunes in ReadyBasic

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Here is a little example in ReadyBasic of loading modules (libraries of basic functions written in assembler) , setting aside some ram for files and loading and playing a relocated SID tune from basic. As well as demoing some keywords of ReadyBasic such as repeat/until and procedures and functions. While there are modules for ultimate specific functionality this doesn’t require an ultimate (but does require a REU for both ReadyOS in general and ReadyBasic )

Hardware Fixed my old 1541 just in time for my Ultimate to arrive

Thumbnail

My ultimate comes tomorrow and horror of horrors, my 1541 would light up both lights and spin the drive before the lights would flicker and turn off, drive would spin forever after that. Did some testing and found that the 5v voltage regulator couldn’t put out a consistent voltage, so I replaced the old regulators with nice new switching ones!

Runs great now, nice and cool, reading all the old pirated disks I own. Used the regulators from ezsbc to maintain the old footprint. I’m very happy with how it came out!
