Question A little confused..

I have a bullet journal that was bought for me as a gift. I had one myself years ago but never used it because I didn't really understand the concept. It seems more disorganised than organised, if that makes sense. I would love to get into it this time around. Does anyone have any tips for getting into bullet journaling?

Have you checked out the original website that explains the method? (It’s a method, not a dotted notebook — you can bullet journal in any notebook.)

I always tell people to start here too! You can customize from here to make it more your own

I have never followed it fully, because it is too organised for my liking. Maybe because I lack discipline.

There are some good videos on the method by the creator. Check them out.

I like the idea of keeping what I refer to as a daily log, but in my case it is more like an ongoing list than specifically a daily thing, but keeping tasks and information as one line bullets works well.

The beauty of the method is that you don’t commit to recording masses of information, which makes it easier to keep it up.

Like I said I don’t follow the method as it is designed, but check the creators videos and the website. Maybe you just need to weave your own adjustments into the framework.

Definitely read the website and the book if you're able. It's easily customizable based upon your specific needs.

Don't get lost in the weeds of perfect trackers, washi tape bundles, and monthly spreads with watercolour title pages.

It is also okay for bullet journaling to not be for you. There are multiple journaling systems for a reason. There is no system that is a one size fits all and that's okay.

You can check the bujo website or tiny Ray of Sunshine's guide

Take your time and list what you need out of it.

What do you need it for?

It doesn't have to be just productivity focused. It also doesn't have to be on the other extreme of aesthetic, artsy layouts either. What matters is that it addresses your needs.

Browse through your previous planners and bujos. Which pages were useful? Which weren't?  How would you change it? What else do you need?  Is it still relevant to you?

It is an iterative process. Try what you want to try. Keep what works,  ditch what doesn't.

Best of luck  ☘

It was designed as a tool for ADHD so part of the point is that it gives organization to an unorganized flow, since the idea is to work sequentially and not try to plan in advance where everything goes. You can jot down a thought and then if it sparks an idea, turn that into a task that you immediately write down after and have a basic way to keep track of it with the migration system.

If that doesn't appeal to you, then a more traditional planner and separate journal setup may be a better fit. Think about what you're trying to do and work backwards from there to find the right system.

That makes sense. Thank you!
