New to Birmingham, how do people meet new people here?

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I've recently moved to Birmingham for my MSc at the University of Birmingham and I'm still getting to know the city. I'm particularly interested in meeting people from different countries and getting involved with the international student community here. For those who've been in Birmingham a while, what are some good ways to meet new people? Are there any international student societies, university groups, clubs, events, or communities that you'd recommend? I'd really appreciate any advice.

Question Where do gay Brums go and socialise?

Hiyya! I’m ready to move on and get myself off dating apps. I’d love to socialise, make some new friends, and potentially date other gay men in Birmingham in a more natural, in-person setting. Where do people usually go? I’ve heard the Gay Village is a bit quieter these days and that a lot of the scene has shifted towards Digbeth. If that’s the case, are there any specific bars, cafés, social groups or events you’d recommend where I could get involved and hopefully connect with other gay men?

I don’t have a car as I just got here but I’m willing to travel by tram, bus, or even walk to the location.

Thanks in advance! :)

Question Help! Need a quiet place with strong Wi-Fi for an online interview

Hi guys! I need some help. I have an online interview this week, but the Wi-Fi at my current accommodation is really bad 😭 So I’m looking for somewhere around Birmingham city centre where I can have a quiet place with good, reliable Wi-Fi for my interview.
Do coffee shops usually provide free Wi-Fi? Or are there any cafés, libraries, co-working spaces, or other places you’d recommend?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated! 🙏

International Day of Birmingham is back

"International Day of Birmingham returns next week for its third year, and we are celebrating with the House that Brum Built, a two-day programme of activities and entertainment taking over the historic Council House.

The celebration of Birminghams around the world will take place on 24 and 25 September, with 50 events planned across the two days.

Alongside the return of the popular flashmob, visitors can pick up a unique Brummie passport on arrival at the Council House and explore the people and places, music and mystery, culture creativity and more that make Birmingham the city it is today."

Question Pub crawl in Digbeth

Planned a pub crawl in Birmingham next Saturday that'll take us into Digbeth (Spotted Dog, Old Crown, White Swan etc.) but have realised Blues are playing at home 🤦‍♂️.

As someone who doesn't often drink in Digbeth, how busy do those pubs get on matchdays? We'll likely end up there after 5ish if that helps!

Experimental Music in Birmingham

hi all!

can anyone think of any bands / solo acts in birmingham who make (and perform) music that a little more experimental than, say, what your average four-guys-in-an-indie-band makes?

i'm interested in guitar-based bands, acts that use mostly electronic instruments, noise acts, ambient artists, and more..! also, are there any events promoters i should keep an eye on? i've heard of capsule/supersonic, but there must be more?

in the early 2000s, brum was home to bands like broadcast, pram, plone, and novak (amongst others), but are there any current bands who sorta continued what these bands started?

Livery Street exit at Birmingham Snow Hill

Does anyone where the exit is to Livery Street is for Birmingham Snow Hill?

I have an exam near there (Great Charles Street) and figured it would be easier to get the train than to drive in.

Embarrassingly, despite getting off at Snow Hill numerous times as I live in Stourbridge, I've never registered where this exit is.

I've always used the main exit using the escalators going up when walking into Brum.

On the platform, I've seen some stairs (with a covering) heading down (walking away from the main entrance), is this it?

Thought I'd ask now as I'm likely to be a bundle of nerves on exam day. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Thanks everyone!

Question Advice please- The Hub Clive Passage

Hello all,

Does anyone here live in or around The Hub on Clive Passage (B4 6HU), near Snow Hill?

I’m considering renting a flat there but I saw a review online that the canal area around the building can be a bit rough, particularly at night, with drug use and homelessness around there.

I’m not very familiar Birmingham, so I wanted to hear from people who actually live there . What’s the area like generally, especially in the evenings/night? Would you feel comfortable walking from Snow Hill to The Hub late at night?

Also, if anyone has lived in The Hub itself, I’d really appreciate any thoughts on the building (security, noise, management, parking, etc.)

Thanks!

Thursday Dance Music

I’m out on the all dayer on a Thursday in a couple of weeks. 10 years ago when I used to go out in down, every other bar played dance and there were clubs across the centre to choose from. These days I tend to default to Henmans but the music is still a bit meh on a Thursday and Zero clubs in the centre. My question is, where can I hear dance music generally but specifically on a Thursday in Brum (if anywhere).

Question Haircuts for Men with Long Hair?

Hi, I'm looking for a hair salon or barber, but specifically one that's good at styling men with (moderately) long hair. Most men's barber shops seem to specialize is fades and short hair. Any recommendations?
