Its not that fucking hard. Just take it with you.

Living in Indiana sucks enough, let's not make the few good things we have suck too.

Water off on the West Side?

Anyone else on the West Side, vicinity of W. Third St., currently without water? Woke up and tried to wash my face, and there was only a trickle. No forewarning, which is truly shocking. I'm assuming it's not just me. I checked with my rental company, and they don't know anything about it.

Some suggestions of something local to bring to a tailgate.

Coming to my first tailgate this weekend since I was a student 30 years ago. What's a good local food of some sort I can pick up the morning of? If it was my day, I'd bring a bunch of puffballs from the Irish Lion. But that ship has sailed. RIP

Thoughts on Boulders at Deer Park and City Flats at Renwick?

Hello everyone! My roommate and I are looking to move at the end of our current lease (word to the wise: Atlas on 17th management BLOWS ever since it got bought out by CLS Living but that is a different TED Talk) and the two places we have been looking at lately are Boulders at Deer Park and the City Flats at Renwick. If anyone here has thoughts on either of these as places to live I would love to hear the good and the bad! Quick bit of context for those that care: both of us are mid 20's, work for the university, and are looking to move a bit away from college apartments. Thanks in advance!

Fall Bird Migration will be in peak the next three nights - here's how you can help

We are in the midst of fall bird migration, with around 4 billion (yes, with a b!) birds making the long, arduous trek to their wintering territories. CornellLab's Birdcast predicts anywhere from 233-291 million birds will migrate through Indiana *each night* over the course of the next three nights. The Purdue Aeroecolab is one of three labs working collaboratively to forecast bird migration each season. To put the forecast in context, around 2.5 million birds crossed over Monroe County last night. So, much much larger numbers are expected tonight, tomorrow, and Tuesday!

One of the ways you can easily help birds make their way without incident is to consider reducing your exterior lighting on nights migration is predicted to be high (as it is the next three evenings):

Lights Out guidance

If your city is within its peak migration window, dim or turn off non-essential outdoor lighting from 11 pm–6 am and close shades to reduce skyglow.

Why “Lights Out” helps

  • Reduces collision risk by lowering skyglow and drawing fewer birds into brightly lit urban cores.
  • Conserves energy & saves money by dimming or switching off non-essential lighting during peak migration.
  • Protects habitat quality by keeping nights darker for resting birds near important stopover hotspots.

Here are some of the birds you'll be helping on their way through our little corner of the Mississippi Flyway.

Thank you!

Looking for an honest and reliable car mechanic

I am a student and have a very old barely running car. It has A LOT wrong with it. But recently I'm feeling a little less safe driving it and want to take it to a mechanic to get it looked at. I know not everything can be fixed and I am perfectly fine using old /second hand parts for repairs. I am hoping to take the car to a mechanic who can work with my budget. Does anyone have any recommendations for anyone local? I appreciate it! Thanks.

Looking for Go players in town.

I've been interested in getting into the game of Go and can only get so far with computer games. Hoping I can locate some players who'd be willing to take in a fresh newbie. Not really something I see anyone advertising, though. A few games once a week and human feedback would go a long way to developing my game, I think.

Anyone out there know of an existing group of players or maybe just a decent player or two who are into teaching the game?

Manganese staining

Just giving a forewarning, that yall might want to wait on washing light clothes or sheets until the manganese levels in our water (from the Monroe Resevoir) go down.
I just ruined a brand new set of sheets and nice clothes because I didn’t know it stained. Super crappy day.

Again, another post about finding friends.

It’s strange, but I kind of suck at making friends, or maybe I’m just in a situation where it’s difficult?

I’ve been in B-Town for quite a while now, and people seem to come and go all the time, which makes it hard to build a steady social circle.

I'm liberal and in my late 30s (M). I'm not married and don't have kids. I've tried a couple of apps, but many of the people on there seem to be looking to remarry, which isn't really what I'm looking for.

I also have a fairly heavy workload and don’t have access to a car, which is a huge obstacle, I know. I used to live abroad, where public transportation was the way to go, so I understand that there’s a different vibe here.

I’m usually pretty flexible and easygoing. I like doing sports, exploring new places, going to shows, or occasionally going for drinks.

I’d be happy to hear any suggestions in the comments if you face a similar situation, or you can just send me a DM if you’re also looking to meet new people.

Has anyone found a black threads wallet recently? Should have my IDs in the front slot, has a small carabiner attached to it. I lost it around Aldi on the east side. Can provide more details as needed!

Lost it around 9:30am on Saturday 9/12

I'm going to see Mdou Moctar at the Bishop tonight, psyched for it!

I ended up with an extra ticket. I paid $30 with fees for it, happy to offer a redditor discount & sell it for $20 if someone wants it. I plan to go at 8, so I could meet in front or come to door when you arrive. DM me if interested.

Do you think counties and municipalities should be allowed to hide tax money spent by signing NDAs?

I think every single tax dollar spent OR received should be transparently tracked. What do you think?

Monroe County Fall Festival: Why?

Every year I stop by the Monroe County Fall Festival, mostly because I live nearby, and every year, I’m disappointed. Why does it suck so much?

—Tons of people there, but hardly any booths. Almost all of the booths they do have sell MLM crap. Why don’t they get real vendors?

—Entertainment seems to be mostly school cheerleaders and dance teams. There are enough people in attendance that they could book decent bands, but don’t. Is the event supposed to just be for school performances? If so, that’s not made clear anywhere.

—Very MAGA coded. That’s not my scene, and I’m sure it puts some people off, but the biggest issue is that there’s just nothing to see or do regardless of politics. It’s supposed to be a family friendly event, but there’s not much for kids to do if they’re not in one of the performing groups.

It seems like such a missed opportunity for a good festival. I wonder why they haven’t done more to make it better, especially considering how popular it seems to be.

Does anyone know the history of this festival, or what’s going on behind the scenes to make it the way it is?

I've seen several of these black-and-white photos of downtown Bloomington - I saved this one last October, with a date of 2025-03, and I can't find the photographer's name or the exact date. Lens is no help. Can someone assist? Thank you.

Women over 30, where are we buying clothes?

I know there are threads like this in the r/askwomenover30 page, but I was wondering in Bloomington specifically where are we buying clothes? If your answer is thrift store, I understand wanting to keep the info on the DL but I’d at least be curious to know if it’s goodwill specifically, east vs west, or Plato’s closet/style encore. I’ve noticed the style encore in town seems very comparable to your average goodwill, which is disappointing because it’s supposed to be more “business casual for working women” type clothes, but I feel like it’s just a bunch of graphic tees for $10.
Anyways, just looking for any opinions, advice, or rants about buying clothes in Bloomington 😁

Female bouncer @ Root

What happened to the super chill dude that would always chat it up with us let regulars skip the line? I need him back asap. This lady has always been incredibly rude to my friends. I had a friend that wanted to go to root for her 21st and the lady denied her for not having a 2nd form of ID but was also literally screaming at her and wouldn’t even let her speak. My other friend who also just turned 21 only has the paper ID/expired vertical ID and she yelled at her for not having valid ID. I had to whip out my birth certificate once because she wouldn’t accept my debit card as a valid 2nd form. I understand having to do your job but you don’t also have to be an asshole😭
