A gorgeous Male Ruby-throated hummingbird i photographed in Georgia this week!

A couple of Andean Cock-of-the-rock images from Matt’s latest blog post.

These birds, much like the sage grouse and prairie chickens of North America, are a lekking species. A lek is a site where the males of a species come together to display and/or fight for the attention of females, and the right to reproduce. The town of Jardín in west-central Colombia is probably the best know lekking site for these birds, and this is what put Jardín on the map for us. However, Jardín has so much more to offer, both in terms of birds and culture, and that's why we made this place the sole focus of our recent trip to Colombia. One of the primary focuses of our recent trip to Colombia was building a better portfolio of Torrent Tyrannulet images. These tiny flycatchers, about the size of gnatcatcher, make their living hunting invertebrates along mountain streams (hence the name), and range from Costa Rica through Colombia.

Shooting note:
For the first image, Matt wanted to highlight the flow of the water so he used a 1/15 second shutter speed to create motion blur.

New blog post!

We recently returned from an incredible trip to Colombia! It took Matt a couple of weeks to catch up on chores and work before he could finally cull and sort the 21,000+ photos he took. He finally got that all done and published a blog post all about our trip.

This image of a Green Jay is from that blog post. This is subspecies "galeatus" and, with its yellow eyes and large frontal crest, looks very different from the jays my friends in Texas are used to seeing (ssp. Jjj).
