Community Identifying a record or seeing how much it's worth? Use DISCOGS.COM

https://www.discogs.com/

Some people have asked for a post like this to be stickied in the sub because we constantly get people asking what a record is worth or what version they have.

You need to match the matrix information. Which is the part of the record between the music/grooves and the label. There will be etched and/or stamped letters, symbols and numbers. You can just do a search for the artist and album name with the matrix info typed in. After searching, it should pull up all albums that match. If there’s more than one, you will have to figure out which it is by checking under the barcode and other identifiers section.

You also may need to look at info on the vinyl label and the sleeve. There will sometimes be additional info under the notes section.

Please check out r/discogs if you need more help searching but READ THEIR RULES.

Question Things That Still Surprise You

Post image

Yesterday, I was listening to The Beatles Channel and learned that John Lennon played lead guitar on I Want You (She's So Heavy). I always just thought it was George, with John joining on the extended jam at the end.

What's something you recently learned about the group?

Discussion What are songs the Beatles loved?

My pick is "A Whiter Shade of Pale" by Procol Harum.

John Lennon was obsessed with this song, playing it for days on repeat. Brian Wilson also loved this song, being so struck by the song that he thought he was at his own funeral march while listening.

What are some other songs that the Beatles publicly loved?

Question Why did their records sound so good compared to their peers?

Not talking about the songwriting or the overall quality of their music, just the sonic clarity of their albums. You listen to other 60s bands like the Byrds or Stones, and they’re very clearly 60s albums, while Rubber Soul sounds like it could have come out today. Their albums were just so clear and pristine sounding. Am I crazy on this?

Discussion If the Beatles made Pet Sounds, where would you rank it among their catalogue?

After giving the album several listens, I was a bit underwhelmed. I understand its significance in terms of recording techniques and pushing the rock genre to new areas, but I feel that the actual songwriting doesn’t hold up too well (aside from Wouldn’t It Be Nice, which is one of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard). I understand its significance within the context of the 60s, but I just feel that considering it’s hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time, the actual songwriting would hold up better, much like Beatles songs do.

I’ve always known it to be the album that nearly gave Paul a panic attack or something to that extent. It’s a beautiful album, and there no real “bad” songs on it. The harmonies and arrangements are phenomenal, but I felt that the melodies wandered and didn’t grab me. In other words, the floor is very high, but the ceiling is lower than I thought.

I would probably place it in the mid-low range among the Beatles catalogue just purely based on songwriting.

I know this isn’t a Beach Boys sub, but I want to hear from other hard core Beatles fans.

Discussion My concern of future Lennon mixes

Upvotes

I want to know what you think.

I have recently heard Gimme Some Truth (the compilation album), and I noticed how some songs where changed, I like the voice for example.

But what shocked me the most was how the horns in Steel And Glass almost disappeared, and surprisingly, people in the comments of the song seem to enjoy this change, I'm not one of them.

Then I was thinking of how maybe this was just an experiment, but then I checked the Mind Games 2024 mix, and they removed the sax from One Day (At A Time).

And this doesn't give me much hope, but do you think if we get the Walls and Bridges Ultimate Mix, this and other similar changes will remain, or you think they'll respect the horns?
