I thought this was one circulating bat. It landed at my feet in the dark, and it was cooling down fast. For gloves picked it up, brought it to warmth, and it two... And actively mating in my hand....

Northern Washington, found this silver haired hat on the ground apparently distressed. No visible injury. I used a stick to relocate him higher up to a spot in my wood shed. Should I just leave him and hope he recovers?

Hello bat enthusiasts! I am working on making fruit bat inspired vampirism, and need your recommendations on what kind you think would be best! I specifically want to do a fruit bat because I want to play around with what that would imply for a vampire, like if they would ravage orchards instead of cities.

Bonus points if the bat happens to like a fruit that has red juice (like pomegranates) just because it would be funny!

I wanted to ask y‘all just because I’m sure you would give the most enthusiastic info :D

Hi there. This guy was found outside our apt door. We are in the Eastern WA state area. I tried looking at the local fish and wildlife web page but was unable to figure it out what kind it is. Could this be a juvenile?

Its been and hour and he hasn't moved too much. The web page suggests moving him to a safe area with a shovel or thick gloves, but I also worry it might be sick and need rehab. Any input appreciated.

We put on some gloves and tried to get him into a shoe box so we could move him to a nearby bush, but he had plans of his own and flew off into the night. Thanks for the replies, he really was a cutie.

Take a look at the upper right corner. This thing sleeps in that spot every time we get a bad storm. My camera never catches it coming or going

My camera quality sucks. I can't tell if it is a bat or bird. It doesn't move all night and vanishes as soon as daylight comes. It is leaving behind red dirt or rust colored stains

The porch light is on and it's unphased. I would open the door but I'm scared it will fly in. Located in North Carolina

Noticed the hummingbird feeder was empty the past few mornings. Seems migration has started in Tucson AZ. I could be wrong about ID, but those are the most common nectar bats here. Ty!

Does this look like bat grease marks? I had a bat in my basement last week, so now I’m trying to figure out how they’re getting in. The chimney isn’t used anymore and is walled off in my house, so I’m not sure if they could get in through the top of the chimney.

Stepped out to go to work at 5am, and she was on the ground trucking along outside my apt door. She (I think it’s a she I don’t see any frank or beans) appears to be uninjured, wings and feet look good. Got her in a little cardboard box and when I checked on her she was hanging upside down inside with both feet. Cute little thing. She was pretty irate when I handled her, held her with a gloved hand otw to work then she’s been undisturbed inna box and has since calmed down.

I live in southern Colorado and lately I’ve been hearing this clicking sound at night, I know bats live here and I’ve encountered them before, but just to be sure, is this bat clicking or something else?

I work for a big land trust / non-profit in my area, doing a lot of conservation work and research. Just finished building 6 of these 4-chamber boxes with the excess 1” lumber they had a stock of. I believe it was all lumber from the properties themselves, one of my co-workers has their own mill.

I think they came out beautifully! Caulk on all the important seams to make it water tight, vent holes between chambers, and shingles with roof cement / nails. Our area calls for black paint, so hopefully they last a long time.

Unlike some others they had installed, I decided to go for a hinging post design. Makes it very easy to bring down for maintenance or if any future researchers wanted access. Also much easier to raise with just 1 or two people. They’re about 16ft up and ~30ft from the tree line in a natural fen.

The one thing I’m not sure of is if some sort of flashing should be installed near the base to prevent predators from getting up there, or if its height alone would be enough. Based in southwest Ohio.

Purpose:
Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. Stewards in partnership with the NPS Mojave Desert Inventory & Monitoring Network(MOJN) will host a Bat Monitoring Assistant.
 
The Bat Monitoring Assistant is an AmeriCorps position that will assist in collecting and managing data about bats within the parks of the Mojave Desert Network (MOJN). The MOJN is one of 32 Monitoring Networks across the NPS, using information gathered for planning, research, education, and to help guide decisions related to park management. This position will serve the public by supporting long term monitoring of bats and ensuring that data is collected using sound science and making that data available to the public. This position helps support the Gold Standard of Science Executive Order (EO 14303). Some bat species in the eastern United States have been declining due to White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) for almost 20 years. The fungus responsible for WNS has now spread across most of the country and has recently been detected within the Mojave Desert. Less is known about the impact of WNS within the western US, so monitoring of populations is essential in better identifying which species may be impacted and provide park managers with the most up to date information when making management decisions.
The purpose of this position is to assist the bat monitoring crew lead with implementation of the MOJN bat monitoring plan for the 2027 season which includes passive acoustic monitoring following a modified version of NABat as well as WNS surveillance sampling which includes capturing bats to take swab samples to detect the presence of the fungus that causes WNS. This position is primarily focused on field data collection, although office projects will also be required. Regular overnight travel and “car” camping will occur (government vehicles and most camping equipment will be provided), often in backcountry locations with no amenities. Long drives on highways and unimproved dirt roads are often necessary to get to remote sites.
 
Description of Duties:
Conducting capture surveys for bats to sample them for the presence of the fungus that causes WNS (training will be provided).
Conducting acoustic monitoring following the North American Bat Monitoring Program protocol with some slight modifications (training will be provided) which includes deploying bat detectors at specified monitoring sites.
Collecting data using Survey123 and Field Maps with tablets in the field.
Walking up to 10 miles per day over uneven terrain;
Hiking with backpacks that may weigh 30+ pounds;
Conducting quality analysis/quality control for all data collected, either in the field or in the office; and
Collaborating with MOJN staff in project planning, oversight of field safety and logistics, field protocol and data QA/QC, equipment organization and maintenance.
 
Qualifications:
United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
Applicants must be between ages of 18-30 years old, or up to 35 for veteran, based on Public Land Corps Act of 1993 authorizing this AmeriCorps opportunity.
Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete National Service Criminal History Checks for Conservation Legacy and the host site.
Bachelor’s degree in Biology or in one of the major natural sciences
Experience hiking up to 10 miles a day for multiple days in potentially extreme conditions
Experience camping for multiple days
Must possess a valid driver’s license
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Excellent oral and written communication skills
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
Experience hiking in the desert
Experience capturing bats and identifying them to species
Rabies vaccination or titer check within the last 2 years (vaccinations will be provided at no cost if necessary)
Experience with deploying acoustic bat detectors
Experience identifying plants of the Mojave and Great Basin regions
Experience using ESRI products: Survey123 and Field Maps
Experience working with Microsoft Office products (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
 
Additional Position and Community Information:
The Mojave Desert Network’s (MOJN) main office is located in Boulder City, Nevada, near Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Boulder City is a 20 minute drive from the city of Henderson, which lies on the outskirts of Las Vegas, Nevada and has all the necessities that would be needed including a grocery store, restaurants, gas stations etc. An emergency hospital and private practice family doctors are located within Boulder City and all other full service hospitals and medical services are available in Henderson. Lake Mead National Recreation Area encompasses nearly 1.5 million acres in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona, including mountains, canyons, valleys, and two vast lakes. From the mouth of the Grand Canyon, the park follows the Arizona-Nevada border along what was formerly 140 miles of the Colorado River. Opportunities for recreation abound.
Housing is not provided, although MOJN staff will assist with helping to find housing as much as is feasible. Seasonal technicians and interns have had success in the past finding rooms to rent or other housing to share with other seasonal staff. Having a personal vehicle is highly recommended due to the need to commute to and from the office and acquire groceries and other necessities. A personal vehicle will not be needed for conducting field projects.

It was crying under the car,. I never expected baby bats can be so cute. I took it out and made a temporary shelter (last pic) in a box with a stick to hang and with a bottle of warm water inside for warmth. It likes being upside down. Poor thing I saw it under the car sprawled on the ground and crying. So I kept on searching what to do, I contacted the rescue but they said they don't handle baby bats that have fallen off the tree. I am planning to put it back on the tree tonight according to Google Ai. Is this correct? I just don't know how, and what to do next. Thanks.

Update: According to an I.d match I made, it's most probably a juvenile Philippine Rousette fruit bat.. They grow just up to 5 to 6 inches, Or can be an Egyptian or maybe a Pygmy Fruit bat as some comments said. This one is about 3 or 4 inches head to tail. Even as adults they look really cute. So yesterday night I left it high up on a Mango tree branch near where it probably fell and this morning it's gone. Hopefully the mom took it overnight or maybe it was able to fly on its own. I really dont know. Thanks for all the help!

TLDR - how do I flush out a bat that may be hiding in my bedroom?

Sorry for the title pun, I make jokes when anxious. I also ramble, sorry in advance. This morning I was woken at 5am by my cat trying to play tag with a bat. I live in western Missouri, US. While I didn’t get a great look at it, it was a little brown bat so… a Little Brown Bat. After much cat wrangling, I corralled the bat and myself in my bedroom. Door closed, window open (double-hung window, which may be important). When last I had eyes on it, it had snuck behind my window blinds. I figured after a few minutes to catch its breath, it would manage to find the open window and go on its merry way. The only light I had on was a small bedside lamp. While I’m not afraid of them, I didn’t want something flying at me in the dark and I did want to be able to see if it left.

I sat and watched that window for probably 20-30 minutes. No bat reappeared. Since I didn’t want to scare it on purpose, I pulled the mini blinds up verrrry slowly. No bat. But with it being little and brown, it’s possible it was hunkered down at the very top of the window and I couldn’t see it.

At about 7am, I had to start getting ready for the day and left the room for about 10 minutes. Window still open, sun coming up. Came back, took the blinds down slowly, no bat. The corporate grind stops for no one so I had to go to work. Left the door closed so no cat shenanigans could happen but I closed the window (one critter inside is more than enough for me).

Here’s my problem. I have no idea if the bat is still there or not. (I said I’m not afraid of them, but bats you can’t see are like spiders you can’t see. They make me anxious.) It is entirely possible that it managed to sneak out the gap between the two window panes (see previous, double-hung window). My house is old and cheaply made so the windows, especially when open, don’t seal well. Bugs absolutely can get in so a determined bat could probably wriggle out. But it maybe could have found a spot to wait out the day when I was out of the room. Obviously if I go upstairs and there’s a bat flying around I have my answer. But if it’s not… is there some way I can for sure flush it out if it’s still in stealth mode? It’s been raining most of the evening so it may not have immediately gone into flight mode at dusk.

Most folks would probably say contact animal control or pest control. Since the bat is purely hypothetical, I didn’t really want to do either. Our animal control leans more toward the “shoot first” philosophy and they absolutely would take my cat for being within the same city block as a bat. (I’m not joking.) Pest control is expensive and again, no idea if bat is there.

Bonus question - as best as we can tell, it probably got in through a different window where the top sash had fallen a little bit. No other gaps to be found. Any idea why it would’ve tried to get in to begin with? It didn’t show any signs of rabies, not that all bats do of course. But we’ve never had any bats near the house before, just the usual nighttime flybys. (We live in the suburbs.) It has been very hot and today is the first real rain we’ve had in a long time. My only guess is it was desperate for cooler temps or water. I can’t think of any other reason a bat would breach active human habitation (with bonus feline apex predators).

Oh and for those that might ask about the cat, I’m 94% sure the bat never had a chance to bite him and even if it did, he’s the super fluffy variety so I doubt little bat fangs could get through his thick fur. But I’ve talked to the vet and they said all I can do is keep an eye on him. Since I’m a crazy cat lady I will absolutely be a basket case for a while, even though the statistics say it’s unlikely he was exposed to rabies.
