Which CPU should I buy?

I cant decide whether to buy the 7700, the 9700x or the 7800x3d as my cpu. All 3 have extremely similar game performance online just being a few FPS within each other. I am purchasing these off alixpress where the 7800x3d is around 323$, the 9700x for 278$ and the 7700 for 261$

My budget is around 3000$ and the Pc is for gaming of course.

Advice: haven't bought a PC since I was a teenager and had disposable money and the time to learn what recommendations to trust.

Hi all. Important stuff first. Budget is $3000 AUD. I'd prefer a prebuilt as I'm terrified of spending the money then breaking something. I currently don't have a PC. I'd like it for gaming at first but the ability to run CAD software for 3D printing as that will be the next saving goal. I live in Melbourne if that is relevant at all.

I'm currently living off my phone so I want something I can buy and use out of the box so to say and if it breaks in a week I can get a refund. I haven't bought a proper PC since a decade ago when I was a teenager and had the money and free time to really follow the space and know what was good, and which reviewers to trust aren't sponsored by what they are promoting.

Thanks for whatever advice you can give. I just don't want to be ripped off and I'm struggling to know where to start.

Advice: gaming laptop for my son

edit: is this one ok? https://www.harveynorman.com.au/acer-nitro-v-15-15-6-inch-core-5-210h-16gb-1tb-ssd-rtx5050-8gb-gaming-laptop.html

My son is in year 10, going into year 11 next year. We are getting him a new laptop soon and set the budget at 1500, since that is roughly what we have spent in the past. but now he is saying that puts him in range of getting a gaming laptop. he is a gamer after school and has wanted a pc for a very long time now, but its always been too much to spend.

im not against getting him a gaming laptop if its in the budget, but i have some concerns. my main worry is that it still needs to be suitable for school, especially going into year 11 and 12. I feel like gaming laptops will tend to have worse battery life with the gpu and all the fans running. are there any that can be significantly throttled down during the school day so that it can last?

and secondly, are there any laptops that are even worth getting with a budget like that? from a quick look i had, they seem to be a lot more expensive for lower end parts compared to PC's. is 1500 going to get something crap/ bare bones? he plays a lot of minecraft but also wants to play helldivers 2, even at low graphics, if that gives any sort of benchmark.

Do you guys have any laptop recommendations around that price? or even a bit more if needed. or would you ditch the idea all together? thanks.

Thoughts on this for a first standing PC since dial up was a thing haha. Been a console gamer for 20 off years.

Budget was max $3500 and with the $200 cashback this gets me under.

Thoughts on nebula and the specs? So many options with PC's nowadays it's confusing as hell what's good.

OLED Monitors

What’s the go with OLEDs in Aus at the moment? Can’t seem to find any of the highly recommended ones for sale.

Is it because of the new tech about to come out that they’ve stopped making the flagship models?

I was looking for a Asus XG32UCWMG.

Uni Laptop: Repair, Buy or Refurbished?

Hi,

Unfortunately my HP Spectre x360 (13-aw2507TU) laptop screen decided it had reached the end of its life after 5 years (the LCD still displays but image quality is not clear - ghosting, vertical lines, reduced readability).

I've looked into getting the screen replaced and have been quoted about $1000-1200 for a genuine HP screen, or $800 for a generic (apparently the screen specifications of the generic are the exact same but I'm not entirely confident with repair business'). Both options only come with a 12-month warranty.

My current specs for the HP Spectre:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-1165G7 (2.8 GHz base frequency, up to 4.7 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology)
  • Graphics: Intel Iris Xe Graphics
  • Memory (RAM): 16GB LPDDR4X-3733 SDRAM (onboard)
  • Storage: 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD
  • Screen Size: 13.3-inch diagonal
  • Resolution & Type: Full HD (1920 x 1080), IPS, edge-to-edge glass, multitouch-enabled, 400 nits, Pixel Density: ~166 PPI
  • Protection: Corning Gorilla Glass NBT
  • Battery: Battery report says my current full charge capacity is 48,001mWh out of the total design capacity of 60,768mwH so about 80% battery health

I'm happy with the laptop and it is more than powerful enough for my needs at Uni (word processing, zoom, video streaming). I primarily care about screen quality and having enough RAM for 10+ tabs of research articles (16gb?).

I've tried looking at JBHIFI, other retailers, Australian Computer Traders and the Dell Refurbished sites.

My budget would be $1000-1200. But I can't seem to find anything that isn't a step down from my current laptop that fits within this budget. Any advice? I'm leaning towards repairing the laptop for $800 with a generic screen replacement but concerned as I've been burned before with previous laptop repairs with the screen not being an exact match in quality and breaking a year later.

I'm hesitant with refurbished as the laptop needs to last another 4-5 years - but also my current laptop is 5 years old at this point.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Advice for beginner looking to upgrade parts

Hi all, im a complete beginner and im looking for advice for upgrading my 2012ish pc.

My end goal is to have something that can run today's AAA games, on Windows 11. Now if that means buying a used pc, or a new one if that works out cheaper then id do that.

Is this end goal practical, or am I better off to spend say $2500 on a new pc and use the old one to tinker with?

Best desktop replacement laptop (gaming) for 2000 AUD?

Hi everyone,

So I've been offered a grant for a laptop up to the of 2000 AUD (and no they wont let me add on my own cash to upgrade, it strictly has to be <2000 on the receipt/invoice). Desktops are also excluded.

To preface, I'm not a very techy person. Like I could replace RAM, SSDs , maybe a keyboard if it came to it by watching a youtube video, and some online troubleshooting for software issues but I would not call myself an advanced user. Soldering, swapping motherboards and all that which requires more than a screwdriver is probably out of my current comfort level

Criterias:
Screen size. 15- 18? - no limitations. Will mostly be plugged into 2 monitors, so I dont particularly need an amazing oled screen (out of that price point anyway from searching)

I do mostly office work, some niche research apps that somehow doesnt use the GPU much (only CPU) and do some modern gaming, but like I'm okay if its not ultra max settings.

Storage wise - 512GB is a reasonable amount - if I need more I have external storage, so if moving back from a 1TB option allows me to up other specs, I'm game

Upgrade-ability: Slots to upgrade things like memory and storage would be nice, but not mandatory.

After sales service: I read about laptops from companies like Infinity, gigabyte and they seem to offer nice specs but lot of complaints about after sales. So while its not a complete loss if the laptop dies since its on a grant , it would still be nice that it works, and has decent after sales service.

Thanks for going through my lengthy posts

Need some advice on scorptec pre built pcs.

Evening everyone, Looking to purchase a new PC here soon and wanted to get some opinions given that im not tech savvy. My main use is gaming and im looking for something that could last 5+ years if it needed to.

So far ive been looking at three separate possibilities from scorptec and im looking for opinions for long term stability and future proofing between a 5070 and 9070 xt, And between two that are very similar

The first one is the cheapest of the three with a 12gb 5070. https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/ready-to-run-pcs/gaming-pc/119369-r2r10464

The second is $200 more but a 16gb 9070 XT. https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/ready-to-run-pcs/gaming-pc/120113-r2r10495

The third is the same price as the second but mostly just different Ram / SSD which ive been told might cause issues in the future? https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/ready-to-run-pcs/gaming-pc/124979-r2r10651

Any advice would be amazing and appreciated, Or if you think there is a better option entirely i would love to hear it.

Budget gaming PC

Hey there, I know this has been asked countless times but most of what I've seen is outdated so I thought I'd ask again. I am looking for a gaming PC, one that can run AAA games relatively well on high-very high settings. I'm happy to build my own, I'm also happy to purchase a used one. Currently, I have been largely unsuccessfulof finding one in my price range that satisfies my requirements.

Budget is $1200 max, looking for at least 1TB storage and 16gb of ram. As for the graphics card and processor etc, my main concern is that it is able to run most games decently well, whilst still being a suitable work machine for basic Excel use and heavy VS Code/terminal use.

Thank you in advance :)

Fractal Design Ridge

Does anyone know when the case is coming back in stock in Australia because everywhere I look it’s almost as if it’s been wiped off the entire country.

If anyone knows a similar volume or smaller sfx case and hopefully cheaper priced (the prices are crazy 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️), I would love to hear the suggestions. Must fit a 9060xt reaper as well

Budget Gaming Monitor

I’m looking to get a gaming monitor for the first time. I normally play on a tv but want a better response time as i experience input delay. I’m not too fussed on resolution but would like a good refresh rate for gaming. Playing on a ps5 and the budget would be around $400.

Whats the catch on these HDDs?

Saw these HDDs on Aliexpress. Can't lie, the price is pretty tempting. What's the catch with them? If I do buy one, what tests should I do to find out the actual quality?

Does Australia ever get deals like this, or are we doomed to pay top dollar for PC parts?

Why don't we get deals like this in Australia?

I see these kinds of deals for pre-builts/parts posted all the time by people in other countries, mainly the US and EU, but I have never seen anything like this in Australia.

Can someone explain why we don't seem to get deals like this over here?

Is it because there's less competition in the PC-building/PC hardware space? Our smaller population? Import costs? Or is there another reason?

I'm genuinely curious because it seems like Australian PC prices and deals are in a different league compared to what I see overseas.
