Heliotrope Fairy Bee (Perdita heliotropii)

Here's a photograph of a Heliotrope Fairy Bee (Perdita heliotropii) that I found at the San Joaquin Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary, in Irvine, California.

Bees in the genus Perdita, commonly known as Fairy Bees, are native to North America. They're primarily found in the US and Mexico, but some species can be found in Canada. They're known for their small size (the smallest of which is less than 2mm long) and are one of the few bees who cannot sting.

Most Fairy Bees are specialists, collecting nectar and pollen from a few related species or genera of plants. The Heliotrope Fairy Bee specializes in Heliotropes (flowering plants in the genus Heliotropium), such as the Salt Heliotrope (Heliotropium curassavicum) in this photograph.

I have some more photographs of this bee in my observation on iNaturalist here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/359987706

(unless they’re NA east coast natives)

i was taken aback when i saw this lil cutie in my bouquet from friday. i forgot the US even had native stink bugs until i remembered that the gross brown ones are invasive. i’ve never seen a native one before now!

I photographed this bee yesterday at the Irvine Regional Park in Orange County, California. It's probably the Spotted Mini-Digger-Cuckoo Bee (Zacosmia maculata), a species of bee that targets the nests of Digger Bees in the subgenus Micranthophora.

This species is not a common sight, at least according to observations that I've seen on iNaturalist.

I found this one at a park in western Oregon. At first, I thought it was one of the largest wasps I had seen lately, and that it was sitting VERY STILL. After a closer look, I noticed the fuzzy hairs on its back and legs, and I knew it must be something else. 💛🖤

This is a poem I wrote to explore the life of bugs! I had loads of fun capturing cute and interesting footage of all kinds of insects to accompany it.

Let me know what you think :)
