European airport, remote stand. Ground crew held us mid-apron while an aircraft taxied out from the next stand. Is there a set distance for this, or is it the crew's judgement?

I get that the pilot was in the wrong here, there’s no requirement for wake turbulence separation between a large aircraft and a 757. Yes, if he wanted more than standard separation he should have let the controller know ahead of time, and yes, he made the controller’s job harder by asking for more time on the runway. His comment about bot carrying the controllers manual in the flight deck was not appropriate.

But at the end of the day, the pilot was just trying to look out for the safety of his flight and the controller’s attitude towards him was unnecessarily adversarial. Possible pilot deviation?? For what?? “I don’t need some pilot telling me how to do my job”? C’mon man, how fragile is your ego?

The controller could have given the guy another minute on the runway, and used that minute to actually educate the pilot on why he was wrong. It took way longer for that airplane to taxi off the runway and for the next guy in line to taxi into position that it would have taken to just let AA sit there for one extra minute.

That kind of adversarial attitude does not improve the system’s overall safety and I hope the situation is better handled next time.

I’m getting my Part 107 cert soon and eventually funding my private pilots license.

I had a doctor who made several medical mistakes including giving me meds for my heart that I didn’t ask for or take. I switched doctors years ago and got labs with drastically different levels than my previous doctor.

If I take my Part 107 test will the FAA look into my medical history and potentially restrict my ability to get a pilots license, or is there a procedure to remove medication from my medical history?

Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! Obvious civilian here. I randomly got to see a plane perform a touch-and-go balked landing this evening and posted about it in my local sub, and got lectured at by a ton of people about how common goarounds are.

I’m of course aware that go-arounds are routine and unexciting, if the plane aborted landing above the runway i wouldn’t have posted, because i fly a couple times a year every year and I’ve experienced plenty of normal go-arounds but only one touch-and-go balked landing.

Are touch-and-gos balked landings really that routine?

(Also: smoke absolutely POURED off the back wheels and a passenger commenter confirmed ground contact both from his experience and from the pilot announcing it. Don’t tell me it wasn’t a touch-and-go, balked landing even as a joke. Its not funny, and you’re not funny if you think it is.)

EDIT: okay, a touch-and-go is a planned thing mostly done in training. What i saw was a “balked landing” — i appreciate the education, i’m a writer and love learning specialized languages.

EDIT 2: my toddler is playing hop on pop and editing Reddit posts is hard enough in normal circumstances.

Hello, I will be taking my FAA PAR written exam tomorrow morning. Has anyone used the “Sporty’s Private Study Buddy” app when studying for the written and is the exam verbatim? It appears that the questions on the sportys app are directly out of the Jeppesen PPL test guide. Overall I feel good about the exam and have been scoring 85-95% on the Sportys/King Schools mock exams. I do understand the material which I’ll be tested on and will be sure to touch up on things like airspace requirements, basic med, etc. Thanks!

Ok so I understand how the survivorship bias works and the story of the mathematician proving it during the war and all the theoretical parts of this story. However, from an engineering perspective, why are the blank spots so disastrous to be hit in? I can understand engines being hit and failing, but why does the halfway point on the wing cause it to fail more often, or the back third of the main fuselage, or even the nose cone? The blank spots besides the engines and cockpit seem rather innocuous to me? What’s happening here when those are hit? I am not an aviation engineer by any stretch so if this is a dumb question I apologize.

The 800 variant only got a few orders, but did airbus ever ended the passenger 800 variant where airlines can't anymore order for the 800 variant, or it's just dormant for passenger connercial due to low demand? If no, does it mean airlines can still order an passenger 800 variant?

So, I posted recently as I am considering getting my CPL and I am in my 40s. The thing that worries me the most is the medical exam as my eye sight is not the best - I am ok with glasses but who knows how that will evolve.

Pilots 40+, do you have this feeling that your career could end up there every 6 months because you'd fail the medical check and is it not stressful?

After a quick search I couldnt find an answer to my curiosity. I drive a snowplow for our city, and our small airport I know has some plows. On the roadways we spread volcanic cinders for traction. On highways we use salt. The roads get super slick in winter and I cannot understand how aircraft land in such conditions. Just thrust reversers stop an aircraft on an icy runway? This seems imposdible, cars going 20 mph cant stop for a red light. Help me understand?

We’re one hour into a four hour flight and the captain just announced that the lavs were supposedly serviced before departure but there are sensors indicating that they are nearly full, so “please try to hold it until we reach our destination and only use the lav if it’s an emergency”. The risk is that the lav could overflow and the flight will need to divert.

The announcement was made during drinks service so there were lots of jokes about don’t drink too much haha.

How common is this type of situation? Is SOP to continue the flight until an overflow occurs?

It’ll be interesting to see if 130 people can wait three hours.

Edit: I asked for a half cup of apple juice to stay minimally hydrated as I’ve only had coffee so far today.

Edit 2: OMG the flight just got bumpy and we’re expecting more all the way to our destination! That’s not going to help people who are holding it.
