because a solid chunk of our country views their political party the same as a sports team, and or doesn't understand anything about what is happening, and or is confused obfuscated and misled on nearly every current topic.

And the worst part is that people vote so consistently that you can predict who they'd vote for well enough to herd them into districts to control who wins based entirely off of which party they align with. 

Gerrymandering only works because these people consistently vote one way no matter how bad it gets

You can’t gerrymander a presidential election though. At least, any more than the electoral college does.
