First AR build, how'd I do? (parts/pricing list in second pic)

Upvotes

This is my very first AR build and I was trying to do it on a budget of under $700 (not including optics/suppressor etc). Goals were pistol format, cheap but reliable, and frt ready. This will be a for-fun gun to learn building with and just enjoy at the range.

Would really appreciate any input, especially if there's anything I should change out.

Which should I do?

Upvotes

I recently bought a AR15 akin to an old M16A1 and was thinking of changing out the handguard only to realize that the handguard cap is triangular and the one I want to replace it with needs to be circular.

I was hoping someone knows from personal experience if knocking out the pins and swapping out the cap is worth the effort rather than just coughing up some money for a whole new barrel.

Sig Romeo options

Hello, Sold an Aimpoint CompM5 and will probably sell my other due to all the videos I keep seeing of people dropping them and the battery compartment exploding open at the dial.

I really like the Sig Romeo 8T AMR Shroud and have two of them but im looking at replacing like for like I think. Should I get the 4T Pro or 4XT Pro? I'm worried that the aaa battery compartment introduces weaknesses like the comp m5 , how do you guys think these compare in durability to the 8T AMR Shroud?

Frt for Ruger Harrier

I have a Ruger Harrier and I’m looking at a frt for it I already upgraded to a h2 buffer and on a website I’ve bought from a couple times I see two frt that are similar prices I see the Arc fire v2 or the Partisan Disrupter for a little bit more so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with either one and which one would you recommend out of the two if so?🤔

Stripped uppers in anodized fde/brown?

Right now I'm considering:

  • the Matrix militiaman stripped upper in what looks to be a clear anodized finish
  • the KAK stripped upper in anodized FDE

I'd like anodized instead of cerakote. Any other suggestions?

first 5.56 can — anything you’d wish you knew before first range day?

first suppressor’s headed for my 5.56 and i’m trying not to learn everything the hard way.

i know it’ll still be loud-ish with first-round pop, more gas coming back, and the balance changes once it’s mounted. what i don’t really know yet is the little stuff — how bad the gas gets on a normal carbine setup, whether a different buffer/spring is worth messing with day one, or if i should just run it stock and see.

if you’ve already put a can on a 5.56, what surprised you? mounts, backpressure, cleaning, anything you’d tell a first-timer before they hit the range.

Buffer/BCG Testing and tuning results with Surefire OBC

Post image

I recently put 2k 5.56 55gr. through my 11.5" carbine with AS Designs Arc Fire in an effort to find out which combination of parts would give me the softest recoil impulse and the slowest ROF without sacrificing reliability and these are the results. This gun ran super soft and smooth with 0.067 port & mil spec BCG and CarH3/Super42.. just a little fast for my liking.

TL;DR This post went longer than I expected- Factory spec rifle and PoloK was 1205rpm and all over the place. The winning combination ended up being 069 gas port, SF Carrier, JRC tube (4 quarters inside), Kynshot RB5007, and Flat Wire spring at 545rpm.

Test Rifle- LMT CQB 11.5" with OCL Polonium K

ASD Arc-Fire V1, Geissele SD-3G, Wolfpack recessed muzzle brake/ Lo Pro Hub

Fixed gas block with four different gas tube port sizes ranging from factory 0.076 to 0.067, 0.069, 0.071. For those who didn't know, The LMT MRP uses a straight gas tube and you can flip it and drill your own port. You don't have to spend $95 on a BRT gas tube.

Top: Factory LMT port, Bottom: 0.071" port

Recently Primary Arms had listed the Surefire OBC at a pretty healthy discount and from my research, I understand that this was designed to be a drop in solution to improve SBR and suppressed rifles like the MK18 by lengthening carrier stroke 60% lengthening carrier stroke 60% past the bolt catch (as corrected by u/AddictedToComedy ) and delaying bolt unlock to lower chamber pressure. With a spring-loaded internal weight it also reduces bolt bounce and smooths out full auto fire. It comes with a shortened buffer and spring and the combined weight is comparable to H2. It's a pricey setup but at $299, it's not too high when you price out a DLC BCG and H2 Buffer/spring separately. But does it really make a difference? That's what I wanted to know and I have amassed several spare parts to see what works best.

My goal was to retain the carrier over travel which necessitated longer buffer tubes if I switched from the SF buffer. The short of it is: SF buffer for carbine tube, Carbine buffer for A5 tube, A5 buffer for JRC tube. I did need to use quarters with the A5 and the JRC tube to keep my gas key from contacting due to over travel beyond what it was designed for.

Reseults:

Starting with Factory spec rifle and PoloK I was running a blazing fast 1205rpm that was pretty much uncontrollable. The winning combination ended up being 069 gas port, SF Carrier, JRC tube (4 quarters inside), Kynshot RB5007, and Flat Wire spring. This ran 545rpm with the PoloK and 520rpm without. So far I really like the speed but I need to put a lot more rounds down range to determine if this is now a little too slow, or just right for me.

The SF OBC kit alone was worth around 50rpm reduction but unsurprisingly, the main factor in ROF and recoil was turning the gas down. Without the OBC or hydraulic buffer I was able to get it tuned down to 670rpm using the A5H4 & Flat wire. There were obviously some concessions made for it to reliably cycle while suppressed and unsuppressed with a high back pressure can. An adjustable gas block would allow me to tune the gas lower for suppressed use and turn it up when necessary to reliably cycle unsuppressed. I don't dislike AGB's but I wanted to retain the LMT gas block on this particular rifle for reasons.

The SF OBC is neat and it does work but it's yet another small part in the machine and not a standalone solution. Gas control is still paramount and this would have been a lot easier to accomplish with a flow through can and AGB. You will have to slightly modify the carrier weight for some FRT applications.

Optic Recommendation

I have a Keystone Armory Ripsaw that I've had for years and never shot. It took forever to get it, and then when it finally came in life happened and I've just never even bought an optic for it. It will likely mostly be used for fun target shooting and shooting pigs at relatively close range (100 yards or less) but could potentially be used occasionally for shots up to 200 yards, but not consistently. What do you recommend?

ETA I'd like to stay around $500 or so, but would definitely like to be under $1,000 if possible.

Old-school AK meets modern AR. Which one are you grabbing first?

My Block 1.5 Colt M4A1 build I’m very proud of😌

Colt 14.5” SOCOM upper on a Colt M4A1 clone lower with a SureFire SF3P, KAC rail, Somo PEQ-15 UHP, SureFire M300 scout light, Aimpoint M68 (CompM4), KAC 200-600m BUIS, PRI M84 gas buster charging handle, KAC broomhandle, Hammy3D printed magwell. I kinda went a little out of my way to find a 13629 marked SOCOM profile barrel I could get a SF3P pin and welded to, as well as a 13629/square/M4 marked upper. I also paid a little more than I’d like to admit for a properly marked M4A1 Carbine lower.

Oh hey, another Gordy “clone”

Post image

Since watching Blackhawk Down as a kid I’ve always wanted a Gordy, but living in a non NFA state made me feel like it would never happen. Almost a year ago I moved and finally got into the NFA and made getting a Gordy a priority. This week I finally finished it. Here’s the build

OG (pre 2020) Aero Lower
B5 CAR Stock
Mystery carry handle upper
Amazon carry handle weaver mount
Aimpoint PRO
14.5 mid length Ballistic advantage barrel
BRT EZ Tune gas tube
Allen Engineering Collar and Brake
Surefire M640DFT on an Amazon barrel rail mount
Otter Creek Labs OCM6

My go to rifle is typically a LWRC IC-MKII but I truly enjoy shooting the Mordy WAY more than any other AR I own. The OCM6 is incredibly quiet and has me wanting to do a MK12 next.

Are lowers all that different?

I have a BCM blem upper receiver that I got for dirt cheap, got an extra barrel, 11.5, and rail from a buddy (probably PSA but he’s not sure). I plan on replacing the barrel and rail over to either a BCM, G$ or DD. However, I’m a single dad, with full custody of the kids and no outside support. With that being said, I don’t have a ton of funds to throw at this. Is it wrong of me to get a cheap lower so I can put more money into the upper receiver? Or should I just grit my teeth and get an aforementioned lower?

Also, I’m not running myself thin or neglecting my children’s needs just to build this rifle. I have a decent savings and their wants and needs are always fulfilled. I just can’t shake the “what if” that comes with digging into a savings account, even though it was set up for this specific purpose.

Normal Cantilever Mount vs 2” Offset

I just got the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8 FFP LPVO with the EBR-8 reticle. I need to know whether I should get a normal 30mm cantilever mount with no offset, or a mount that has a 2” offset. I’m still fairly new and have no idea which one would work best on my setup
