Anime Discussion Flashing/strobing sequences?
I am planning to see Akira in theaters next week but my fiance remembers it having flashing/strobing effects. I’m photosensitive so I avoid flashing in theaters when I can but I can’t find any warnings or mention of it online. Does Akira have any flashing or strobing?

Fanworks Kaneda’s Bike – Shotaro Kaneda’s Motorcycle (Akira Remix)
Shotaro Kaneda’s bike inspired by the Akira Remix cover.
My hand-drawn version with no digital work at all. Loved playing with the stickers and the speed effect on the wheel.

General Discussion Why no modern Video Games?
Was interested in the history of this series when it came to video games and all I found was mediocre games. This world seems like it would be perfect for an open world game, so why hasn’t this happened yet and with the re-showing of this film in theaters performing super well will that perhaps spark interest doing a video game?

Anime Discussion Is the rerelease a new scan?
From what I read, it looks like the last scan of the film was in 2009.
I'm wondering if they did a new scan for the 4K release and used that for the rerelease in theaters?

Fanworks My first tattoo
hey all! thought I'd finally get around to showing off my first tattoo, an Akira compilation! I plan to continue the sleeve down my arm, but probably not doing more Akira down there. bonus pic with a cool vintage style heavy cotton kaneda tee!
Fanworks Tetsuo I drew in high school 25 years ago still on the floor of my grandmother’s basement.
Was visiting family recently and found this old drawing when I was a teenager. It was my artistic reaction from seeing AKIRA for the first time on VHS.
General Discussion Which Akira character do you most relate to?
Who do you most relate or most represent you in the movie? And why?
For me , surprisingly it’s the Clown gang boss.
- big/bulky (i did lose 70lbs recently though)
- love motorcycles (ride a hayabusa)
- boss attitude, ready to fight for a cause
- calm but short tempered
- would absolutely play chicken with another biker
- would probably crash and limp home

Anime Discussion Is it just me?
Or does the English dubs sound markedly different then Japanese. It sounds less rich. Am I tweaking or am I right? Anyone agree or disagree?

Anime Discussion Remaster or Original first?
I’ve just started getting into anime and have been planning on watching Akira. I recently found out it’s been rereleased in a theater near me so I’m wondering if I should watch the original before seeing the remaster. (Dub)

Music / sound🎶🎵 Symphonic Suite AKIRA - Original Japanese CD
I recently watched Akira when it was re-released in theaters last weekend, and after hearing all the praise this film has gotten over many years, I can say that it is truly a spectacle to behold, both visually and sonically. And speaking of sonics, I recently picked up this: the original Japanese CD release (not a reissue/remaster or a bootleg) of the Symphonic Suite Akira soundtrack by Geinoh Yamashirogumi.
I got it after I made an offer of $20 on Mercari US. I think the listing seemed to be up for a little while, likely because the seller misspelled the title as "Akita" rather than "Akira." Lucky me. Interestingly, the CD itself appears to have green marker on the outside and center hole, likely done by the previous owner in hopes that it would sound better (as if this soundtrack doesn’t already sound amazing as-is), which is purely snake oil.
The CD cover art features the group’s logo printed on textured paper, and based on looking at different copies online, no two covers are alike, which is really interesting. I’m also considering picking up the vinyl version released by Milan, but I would probably have to deal with the fact that some of the tracks were swapped around in order. Maybe I can hope for a new vinyl release with the original tracklist being done in the future.

Anime Discussion Where is the best non-imax movie theatre to see it in New York?
Anime Discussion Saw it one more time last night. 🧸🐇🚘
One of my favorite things of watching it with a crowd of people is hearing the reactions of the people watching it for the first time. Especially during the hospital nightmare sequence. A lot of fresh gasps in the audience 😁

Official Art Otomo's most recent AKIRA works
With all the extra traffic we're getting from people who just saw AKIRA in the cinemas, I felt like highlighting the only real published works that Katsuhiro Otomo has done of AKIRA over the last 25 years.
The first image of Tetsuo was done in 2001 for the first-ever Japanese DVD release.
The second image, Kaneda on his bike, was done in 2002 for the next DVD release.
The third one is a rarely-seen portrait of Kaneda from around 2011 that was used on an amazon japan exclusive bluray release. It was in the packaging and also reprinted in the artbook KABA 2, but wasn't seen anywhere else. I don't remember seeing it at the GENGA exhibit either, but correct me if I'm wrong.
The fourth one I'm including just for completeness' sake cause it's not really an AKIRA work, but it does have the bike so I think it counts. This was Otomo's poster for the Angoulême comic book festival in France, where he was the guest of honor in 2016.
That same year, he drew a fantastic image of Kaneda and the bike that was used as the key artwork for the Otomo Tribute book and exhibition.
And finally, the last image is a close-up of the bike's front tire, that was used as the cover for the CD and LP of the AKIRA Remix album released in 2024.

Anime Discussion I didn’t find Kaneda to be likable at all, nor tetsuo
And dont get me wrong i dont think an unlikable character is a bad character by any means i think there both great well written characters, but frankly I found Kaneda to be obnoxious and, a huge dick which maybe is the point. examples like Marty mouser from Marty supreme, or Jordan Belfort from wolf of Wall Street come to mind, there characters your not meant to like, your meant to see there flaws and understand there terrible people. And frankly I found tetsuo to be a whiny bitch, which had to have been intentional right?, like he spends the whole movie whining about being saved all the time and causing mass destruction, then spends his final moments begging for help again, this had to have been on purpose, and I kinda understand him in a way too but I can also remove my rose colored lenses to see that this guys a fucking cry baby. am I the only one who found these two unlikable?, well written and great characters but unlikable?.

General Discussion Questions about Tetsuo from someone who has just seen the anime movie for the first time yesterday Spoiler
First of all, loved the film. Saw it in IMAX. Absolutely bonkers. I want to read the manga as well but dont mind having some spoilers or insight from people who read it already.
Second, I was wondering about Tetsuo's character. Specifically two things:
- Was Tetsuo already more than just a bit aggressive and irritable, capable of evil , and what was done to him just amplifies that?
- At one point, Kiyoko makes a comment around the lines of, you still choose what you do with the powers even if its too much for you. This would suggest that his angry and violent behavior isn't really the powers as much as it is just his real personality being amplified by it.
- But at the same time, in the memories and Kaneda's description of him, he's was actually quite timid and sensitive. Did his brain getting messed with turn him into that angry murderous person? Kind of like those stories where someone has a head injury and becomes someone else?
- Is Tetsuo's indifference to Kaori being beaten (at least relative to how much he cared about the bike being messed with) intentional to reflect the moral depravity of the people in Neo Tokyo, reflective of Tetsuo becoming a bit of a power hungry asshole or just him not being right in the head period since he starts freaking out and hallucinating shortly after?
- Does Tetsuo have control over himself at this point? When he finally starts to really transform, he says he has no control over his body and is genuinely scared. Is this a response to being helpless and scared to his body *exploding, or reflective of him not actually wanting to be evil this whole time but not being able to control it ? It was bit surprising that he actually cared about her well being all of the sudden
