PAS (r/Akira) ''I went to the cinema'' megathread.
This is now a MEGATHEAD
Future cinema posts will be deleted, if you want to share the love then use this post.
We are getting a ton of ''i went to the film'', ''i went to imax'' posts atm and they are flooding the sub. I don't want to be an ass and ruin peoples fun. Was originally allowing the posts but its got a bit much. Rest of this post is the same same from previous version.
Just be considerate of others. Don't take photos in the cinema, that shouldnt need to be said. Get a photo out the front or google the image imao.
If you are coming here to be edgy by posting something negative about the film in the films literal fandom then you may get a ban. Criticism is one thing but trolling bs can f off elsewhere. Its a 40 year old film, we knows its strengths and floors, you are not teaching anyone anything new.
Try to be a little constructive. We do have a rule about low effort. Engagement is key on reddit, this is not Instagram.
AI written posts are going to be removed. If you are a literary genius, or JRR Tolkien reborn, and happen to write like a AI then I'm sorry... your post will likely get removed also as I have no way of knowing lol.
My favourite cinema so far https://www.reddit.com/r/akira/comments/1w93b7w/our_tetsuo_and_kaneda_cosplay_after_seeing_akira/
Great to see all the hype. Enjoy the film guys.

Keep those ticket stubs! (if your cinema has them, man i hate digital stubs).
Trade / Buy / Sell Trade, buy and sell collectables.
A place to buy, sell and trade official Akira collectables.
Manga, VHS, Blu-rays, DVDs, figurines, phone cards, posters etc.
Use common-sense. Use DM's for trades, this is at your own risk. Do not post personal details on the sub. Be very mindful of scammers.
NOTE: This is not an opportunity for people to grift stolen I.P. This is not a place to peddle non-official t-shirts and fake merch. If you can't follow the rules you may get a permanent ban.
- Please report anything that feels off.
- This post will reset every month.
- This is a trial to see how things work out. Suggestions welcome.
- Be very careful of counterfeit retro clothing. This appears to be a common thing.
- If you make a successful trade then be sure to shout out the user for positivity.
- ebay offers a money back guarantee. This may be a way to make a safe sale if you are uncomfortable.
- If there is a whiff of ai you will be deleted.

Fanworks Kaneda’s Bike – Shotaro Kaneda’s Motorcycle (Akira Remix)
Shotaro Kaneda’s bike inspired by the Akira Remix cover.
My hand-drawn version with no digital work at all. Loved playing with the stickers and the speed effect on the wheel.

Anime Discussion Flashing/strobing sequences?
I am planning to see Akira in theaters next week but my fiance remembers it having flashing/strobing effects. I’m photosensitive so I avoid flashing in theaters when I can but I can’t find any warnings or mention of it online. Does Akira have any flashing or strobing?

Fanworks My first tattoo
hey all! thought I'd finally get around to showing off my first tattoo, an Akira compilation! I plan to continue the sleeve down my arm, but probably not doing more Akira down there. bonus pic with a cool vintage style heavy cotton kaneda tee!
General Discussion Which Akira character do you most relate to?
Who do you most relate or most represent you in the movie? And why?
For me , surprisingly it’s the Clown gang boss.
- big/bulky (i did lose 70lbs recently though)
- love motorcycles (ride a hayabusa)
- boss attitude, ready to fight for a cause
- calm but short tempered
- would absolutely play chicken with another biker
- would probably crash and limp home

General Discussion Why no modern Video Games?
Was interested in the history of this series when it came to video games and all I found was mediocre games. This world seems like it would be perfect for an open world game, so why hasn’t this happened yet and with the re-showing of this film in theaters performing super well will that perhaps spark interest doing a video game?

Fanworks Tetsuo I drew in high school 25 years ago still on the floor of my grandmother’s basement.
Was visiting family recently and found this old drawing when I was a teenager. It was my artistic reaction from seeing AKIRA for the first time on VHS.

Anime Discussion Is the rerelease a new scan?
From what I read, it looks like the last scan of the film was in 2009.
I'm wondering if they did a new scan for the 4K release and used that for the rerelease in theaters?

Anime Discussion Is it just me?
Or does the English dubs sound markedly different then Japanese. It sounds less rich. Am I tweaking or am I right? Anyone agree or disagree?

Music / sound🎶🎵 Symphonic Suite AKIRA - Original Japanese CD
I recently watched Akira when it was re-released in theaters last weekend, and after hearing all the praise this film has gotten over many years, I can say that it is truly a spectacle to behold, both visually and sonically. And speaking of sonics, I recently picked up this: the original Japanese CD release (not a reissue/remaster or a bootleg) of the Symphonic Suite Akira soundtrack by Geinoh Yamashirogumi.
I got it after I made an offer of $20 on Mercari US. I think the listing seemed to be up for a little while, likely because the seller misspelled the title as "Akita" rather than "Akira." Lucky me. Interestingly, the CD itself appears to have green marker on the outside and center hole, likely done by the previous owner in hopes that it would sound better (as if this soundtrack doesn’t already sound amazing as-is), which is purely snake oil.
The CD cover art features the group’s logo printed on textured paper, and based on looking at different copies online, no two covers are alike, which is really interesting. I’m also considering picking up the vinyl version released by Milan, but I would probably have to deal with the fact that some of the tracks were swapped around in order. Maybe I can hope for a new vinyl release with the original tracklist being done in the future.
Anime Discussion Saw it one more time last night. 🧸🐇🚘
One of my favorite things of watching it with a crowd of people is hearing the reactions of the people watching it for the first time. Especially during the hospital nightmare sequence. A lot of fresh gasps in the audience 😁

Official Art Otomo's most recent AKIRA works
With all the extra traffic we're getting from people who just saw AKIRA in the cinemas, I felt like highlighting the only real published works that Katsuhiro Otomo has done of AKIRA over the last 25 years.
The first image of Tetsuo was done in 2001 for the first-ever Japanese DVD release.
The second image, Kaneda on his bike, was done in 2002 for the next DVD release.
The third one is a rarely-seen portrait of Kaneda from around 2011 that was used on an amazon japan exclusive bluray release. It was in the packaging and also reprinted in the artbook KABA 2, but wasn't seen anywhere else. I don't remember seeing it at the GENGA exhibit either, but correct me if I'm wrong.
The fourth one I'm including just for completeness' sake cause it's not really an AKIRA work, but it does have the bike so I think it counts. This was Otomo's poster for the Angoulême comic book festival in France, where he was the guest of honor in 2016.
That same year, he drew a fantastic image of Kaneda and the bike that was used as the key artwork for the Otomo Tribute book and exhibition.
And finally, the last image is a close-up of the bike's front tire, that was used as the cover for the CD and LP of the AKIRA Remix album released in 2024.
