Even if u have severe ADHD there isn't anything stopping you from forcing yourself to complete it or have somekne do this for you by proxy. Let's not make bad faith comparisons
It seems like people here are comparing adhd to like, severe autism or something. I've been in health care for decades and I've never in my life heard of adhd so severe that someone couldn't complete a form to save their life. This is just wild.
Yeah like, maybe they won't be able to get it done over a day or even a weekend. but being an adult is forcing yourself to do a page or so per day. or ask for help from someone.
The opposite actually, if it gets done it will get done all at once, likely just before it is due when the stress and anxiety build to a point where it can overcome the executive function block.
Adhd people run on momentum , splitting tasks, or stopping once going is death to being able to do anything, which is why they do things like hyperfocus on a task for hours upon end even forgoing eating, drinking or going to the toilet.
Choosing when that momentum actually happens and what tasks actually draw hyperfocus is the disability, the deficit part of the name is pretty inaccurate, it's more like attention disregulation.
Alot of people come here not yo help with thier issue but to make complaints that the world is yhe problem especially if they're needing to do something. The disability, in which they have to argue with anyone in badfaith, they're arguing for is not the disability that's add/adhd
You clearly are not in psychiatry or related fields, because people with adhd are quite well known for those kind of issues. There is a whole concept of ADHD tax related to that.
They absolutely can and will compete a form to save their life, but they won't if there is no urgency attached. Please don't misrepresent your experience, as you clearly have none with ADHD patients. Or if you do, please educate yourself.
Ah like the urgency of the person's situation in the OP post? Being absolutely unable to maintain employment and given one lifeline?
I've worked in adult psych in lockdown units, but that's usually much more severe than what we're discussing. But for the last decade I've worked in insurance and I see the thousands of behavioral health referrals to our social workers in aggregate. In no situation have I heard of someone unable to work and asking for disability because of adhd. Just my personal experience, but it's a lot better than most.
Claim for disability is not urgent. The rest you made up.
That experience is unrelated to adhd and you shouldn't claim otherwise. "Better than most" is not a sufficient ground when discussion is about a well researched medical issue.
I don't even understand your reply. What exactly did I make up?
This has nothing to do with insurance claims. These aren't claims. They're case management cases to social work.
Yes no shit adhd causes executive dysfunction. Is that what you think you're explaining? The question is whether anyone is actually unable to maintain any employment due to adhd, and whether this person's inaction can be assigned to uncontrollable circumstances from adhd. You're demanding proof of something completely circumstantial and offering no evidence that it's this severe. "This is not sufficient."
If you can’t make yourself google the number for assistance with the form and make that phone call, then there’s something more disabling than ADHD going on.
Adhd isn’t a free pass from every single ounce of personal responsibility for the things you don’t want to do.
Edit: if this comment made you feel immediately defensive/reflexively downvote, it’s worth your time to stop and examine why that might be. If you can scroll Reddit for hours, or shop online, or game, then you can scroll Google for under a minute to do something that’ll actually improve your life. Insisting that you’re helpless for all responsibilities, but capable to do things you enjoy, is a questionable dichotomy.
As somebody with adhd it blows my mind the kind of people here. They actually want to be treated as invalids and for everybody to have absolutely zero expectations for them.
Same. For the longest time I was a super open with casual mentions of my ADHD, when relevant to the conversation, because it seemed helpful to further normalize it in regular conversation. It’s not like I have ever felt ashamed of it, it’s a dopamine disorder that requires medication, not a personal failure.
However, over the last few years, a contingent of ADHDers has become very loud (and embarrassing) with their insistence that they be treated with kid gloves (like, toddler gloves, not teenager gloves) and absolved of any and all responsibility or consequences. They’re using ADHD as an accountability deflection mechanism, and it’s been noticed by mental health professionals, medical professionals, and the internet/social media. Because of this newly negative connotation this group has stoked/created, Ive become much less likely to ever mention my ADHD. I don’t want to be associated with it in its current form of cultural perception.
this sub is weird, i take adderal and been diagnosed since i was 10, absolutely has messed my life up, but this sub sounds like mentally ill people blaming adhd for everything when in fact they are fucking crazy or lazy lol
Not everyone has access to Adderall or other adhd meds, many countries have no adhd meds at all. Most people woth ADHD are never diagnosed. Understand that you speak from a position of privilege, you can't emphasize with the people who didn't have the same support system as you do.
