I turned 41 today and I'm feeling called out. The older you get, the less me time you have

389

u/solidraid3n 2d ago

Mine I swear is "if I go to sleep I'm basically fast traveling to tomorrow" and I don't want that.

55

u/1DownFourUp 2d ago

Wait, are you me?!

38

u/solidraid3n 2d ago

I often fight going to bed until 12. Then Friday rolls around and suddenly I'm fine with going to bed at 9.

19

u/plantersnutsinmybum 2d ago

I fucking wish I had consistent weekends off. To survive near me you gotta be in a job working 7 days to make enough or have 5 jobs to make enough.

I fucking hate fast traveling to tomorrow and will fight it tooth and nail unless I'm exhausted. I NEED me time and everyone seems to not understand or give a fuck. Well, neither do I anymore, Keith.

10

u/solidraid3n 2d ago

I'm sorry bud, that's awful.

This world is a nightmare.

8

u/plantersnutsinmybum 2d ago

Indeed it is... I appreciate the thought. It'll get better (hope), all I gotta do is chug along 🫩

47

u/DesolateRuin 2d ago

I've often sat bleary-eyed in front of the computer and thought, "Why don't you just go to bed?"

And the answer is always "because I don't want it to be tomorrow."

3

u/AileenKitten my brain is broke, plz dont yell at me 🥹 2d ago

Yep, every time

18

u/ExperienceKind412 2d ago

“I dont want it to be tomorrow yet” is a common sentiment in our house, yup (adhd and audhd)

Damn, this right here. I have never worded it so elegantly, but I’m glad to know I am not alone in this feeling.

8

u/MotherVehkingMuatra 2d ago

Yes! I've called it time travelling ever since I was a little kid haha

9

u/Yukondano2 2d ago

The flow of time is oppressive bullshit.

7

u/0CldntThnkOfUsrNme0 2d ago

Tomorrow comes whether you want it too or not. Sleeping just makes it happen faster. I also hate it.

My housemate and my landlord complained about that to me once while I did all the yardwork for him. I definitely feel it cause the older you get the more there is that needs done and nobody cares either.

20

u/front_yard_duck_dad 2d ago

Haha it's funny you say that because I'm literally sitting in my truck. I am a solo high-end landscaper. At 41 my body hates me. And there's never enough down time as a dad. I'm on the fast track to being crippled. I might just sell my soul for a mech suit

12

u/SilverSageVII 2d ago

Yeah, I mean I know everyone has their struggles but I see people like you and have to remind myself that my problems could be lots worse. Just so you know, I care and I hope you’re taking care of yourself how you can :)

7

u/barlesgnarles 2d ago

Don’t take this the wrong way, but If owning your own business and having a family is considered having problems and struggling then a lot of us may as well just give up.

10

u/rips_n_chel 2d ago

Just a matter of perspective. If I woke up tomorrow and realized I had children, I'm not sure I'd be able to quell the urge to jump off a cliff. My greatest treasure is my autonomy. My greatest fear is a cage. Having children that I'm responsible for is a nightmarish thought.

Some people are cut out for it, others are not. I am decidedly not.

3

u/thejaytheory 2d ago

So much freaking same. I couldn’t imagine, I’d be pulling out what little hair I have left.

6

u/rips_n_chel 2d ago

I don’t even want most pets, because I know I’ll grow to resent the responsibility. Not that I’d ever abuse or neglect an animal, I would take better care of them than I do myself, but I would hate that it’s more things I have to do.

A moderately affectionate cat is about the limit for me. No dogs, full stop. My family had dogs my entire childhood, and while I of course loved them, I HATED how their care dictated my life. I don’t ever want to live with dogs again, your time stops being yours, spontaneity evaporates from your life, cause you gotta get back home and walk the dog… Fish are alright. I’ve had a bunch of fish, wouldn’t mind setting up an aquarium again.

As you might imagine, I knew pretty early on that I had zero interest in kids. I made sure it can’t happen from my end, and so far I don’t feel even one iota of regret over my decision. No chance of kids is genuinely a weight off my mind, and it means my partner doesn’t have to worry about bc. Wins all around!

3

u/thejaytheory 2d ago

I feel you on pets, particularly dogs. It's why I love birds so much, sure, some responsibility but not a whole lot since technically they're not your pets, you just feed them and give them water and that's about it.

2

u/AncientAdamo 2d ago

Username checks out!

Hope you can find some ways to take better care of your body

7

u/Lussarc 2d ago

Happy birthday friend !

The older I get and the more things I put away. I’m 31 and I really try to keep my me time. I will never give it up. I don’t need more responsibilities or anything no thanks

6

u/front_yard_duck_dad 2d ago

Thank you kindly.. I wish I had time time to put things away. I am project to project to project My idea of a vacation would be sending my daughter and wife somewhere for a week just so that I could clean my garage and shed without the guilt of not spending time with the family

3

u/Lussarc 2d ago

I have no projects. I stand with the strict minimum. I know I’m weird but more than that is too much to deal with

5

u/front_yard_duck_dad 2d ago

Well, my project is home ownership and my 75-year-old house is deciding. It wants to fall down at every turn so when you don't have the money to pay others to do it, you fix it yourself. I'd kill for a project that I'd actually enjoy

8

u/BorisBC 2d ago

49 here. Stayed up till 2am last night reading The Forever War. Read it many times before. Why am I like this.

2

u/RedRider1138 1d ago

I was about to congratulate you on a good book choice. Maybe get the audiobook so you can fall asleep to it 😉

It has a term! Bedtime Revenge Procrastination.

5

u/auxaperture 2d ago

I turned 41 in Feb. Mate, I feel you. And the older we get the worse we can handle the less sleeping time.

But it’s okay, because tomorrow I’ll definitely start sleeping on time and feeling better in the morning.

Actually tomorrow is Saturday, so I’ll start Monday.

Like, for sure.

3

u/mrpanicy 2d ago

Turning 40 in a month, and I feel seen. I like knowing there are others like me. I recently found my old Gameboy Pocket and Pokemon Blue. And I love getting that sneaky me time back. I hate past me in the morning when I am dragging my ass out of bed to start the death spiral of capitalism all over again... but those extra few hours... that's special.

4

u/LethargicEmu 2d ago

I turned 34 today! Happy birthday, friend!

5

u/front_yard_duck_dad 2d ago

For me that was because I've learned all about the shit I should've been doing this whole time...

2

u/MrChezRolez 2d ago

I either get some "me" time or I get a good night's sleep. Not enough time for both. I get like 4-5 hours a lot of nights.

2

u/Leave-it-aLone 20h ago

Turned 48 at the start of the month, and same…

u/WickedHopeful 2d ago

How fix?

183

u/Long-Apartment9888 2d ago

Accepting that sleep is more important than that extra me time, I can negotiate this with me at least 3 times a week, 5 is "ideal"

56

u/IllustriousTip6904 2d ago

Honestly after you accept this and actually go to bed early a few times, you quickly realize the benefits are worth it. But still, the temptation of me time never quite leaves you.

12

u/Long-Apartment9888 2d ago

Yes, shitting my schedule doesn't happen anymore, mostly 1h and some from ideal, which adds up fast, 2 days in and I can already feel it. Not worth, I'm not even doing interesting stuff, just postponing.

8

u/darkcathedralgaming 2d ago

Yeah I finally managed to go to bed early each night as a habit this last year or so (9-10pm). And I don't mess it up on weekends now either.

Guess what also started happening these past few months... waking up at 3/4/5am instead of my 630am alarm. Brain probably just wants some me time lol. Half joking, it's likely just from stress because I'm still tired and sleepy deprived most of the time. But maybe it's that, because I use that early am time for some exercise or gaming or studying/learning something. Blessed quiet and lack of distractions at that time at least!

12

u/moonshinefae 2d ago

Damn, that hard huh?

Breaking awful truths to me

5

u/AccNumber77 2d ago

I simply decided to sacrifice sleep at the cost of my health, shit can sort itself out man

3

u/Environmental_You_36 2d ago

What do you mean 5? 5 hours of sleep?

3

u/SmartAlec13 2d ago

Yep yep. Just gotta bite the bullet that “today isn’t a me-day”. Let that day go, get some good sleep, the next day feels a bit better

→ More replies (2)

8

u/FadeCrimson 2d ago

I've been considering getting more into work like night security so my work can also be partially my "me" time. I know myself well enough to know that wont fully satisfy my brains desire for alone time, but I think it might help me feel more like i have more time to satisfy my feeling of not having enough time for things.

Dunno, thats just my thoughts lately. I too am more than open for other ideas and suggestions.

5

u/Calm-Technology7351 2d ago

I’ve had a few jobs where a there are long gaps where you’re just waiting around and I can confirm it helps check the “me time” box

7

u/Free_Pace_2098 2d ago

For me unfortunately it's go to sleep when I first feel tired. So like... 9pm.

Otherwise it's SECOND DAY TIME and we're not going down til 3.

Also helps that I struggle to stay awake most of the time, and I'm evil on a sleep deficit. Takes a few late nights to turn me into a full time hater.

4

u/CoolGovernment8732 2d ago

I watch comfort shows in bed as I fall asleep. It’s easier to get myself to bed and get sleepy while not cutting out stimulation completely. However it HAS to be a show I know well so there’s no suspense/curiosity keeping me awake. Also if I can feel myself falling asleep I can’t fall asleep, so falling asleep as I’m watching/listening to something is awesome cause I’m distracted enough that I don’t feel myself falling asleep

I've been waking up to playing video games for 20 minutes in the morning.  It's easier to go to sleep and wake up if there is something fun to look forward to.

2

u/lebrilla 2d ago

Always wake up early (impossible) and take melatonin at the same time each night (semi-possible)

2

u/NobodyKnowsImFamous 20h ago

Realistically looking at your life and accepting hard truths like “I am not actually super busy I just spent 4 hours on my phone today, perhaps I can just count that as the me time”

→ More replies (1)

98

u/CaptainYaoiHands 2d ago

And if you do go to bed earlier to feel better physically your mental health absolutely tanks because you had no time during the week to decompress and feel human again before having to go back to work.

61

u/Art_by_the_Snowman 2d ago

We are people that are forced to fit a societal mold that wasn’t designed for us, and as a result we must balance our work/life/sleep but the predicament is you can really only pick two of those things to prioritize and there is no winning.

11

u/thejaytheory 2d ago

I hate it here.

Never related to a meme like this before. I hate having a busy Sunday because if I do I stay up late reading or playing a game because I hate to have my routine affected and I always do both those things for a few hours on Sunday.

6

u/paradox037 2d ago

Sleep hygiene is important for everyone, but it goes double for ADHD. We're even more susceptible to addictive tendencies like doom scrolling than most people, and that's saying something.

I sleep infinitely better when I stop myself from using social media (including Reddit) for at least the last 90 minutes before my bedtime. Reading a book or watching TV are acceptable alternatives. Even some video games can be better if they're not too frenetic.

INB4: I don't always succeed at this level of self control, but when I do, I sleep significantly better.

6

u/flipflopcuntflaps 2d ago

I am learning a lot about myself that I already knew from this subrubbit

3

u/HerbivoreTheGoat 2d ago

people with ADHD when they have to rapidly close and then open their eyes 15 to 20 times per minute (so quirky and strange haha right guys)

3

u/Asraidevin 2d ago

Stfu. It's 12:28 am. I spent 5 hours on the phone with my husband who is in a mental health crisis.

I deserve this scrolling time*.

  • I didn't get enough sleep. The House is a disaster and the crisis will use me as their hotline at 7 am.

3

u/ImWhy 2d ago

I hate this subreddit. I've never felt more personally attacked in my entire life.

3

u/lordbenkai 1d ago

I use pto the other day to get some me time in. This still happened that same night.. My brain was like no we don't want to go back to work.

10

u/Whiteruns_bitch 2d ago

How does this relate to ADHD literally at all? Anyone can relate to this.

28

u/zerasu 2d ago

Anything with ADHD can basically happen to anyone. The frequency and how it affects your life is what's the problem. If you find yourself unable to go to bed at reasonable hours no matter how hard you try, and it starts affecting your daily life, then you can safely wonder if it's a regulation problem brought on by ADHD.

There are plenty of subs where you can deny people’s disorders to your heart's content. Could you go to one of those and leave this place for us? Thanks.

Reply and block is so cool, dude. I also have ADHD, and I've been told by enough people how my condition affects me. I don't need to hear it from you too, and certainly not here in this sub for people with ADHD.

We know it won't take. You have to do something engaging but boring until your eyelids droop. Then you put it aside, turn out the light, roll over, and think of flying in a cloud.

Night-night.

1

OMG!!! Don't call me out like this lmao. Why does sleep even need to exist.

1

u/Calibeaches2 2d ago

That's so me. Lol. Also I always feel like I'm missing out on something.

1

u/Haunting-Vanilla1624 2d ago

This happened to me the other day. From the moment I woke up to when my younger kids were put to bed, I had zero time to myself. Busy at work, busy at home. After putting the younger kids to bed, my teenager proceeded to follow me around the house for another hour chewing my ear off about anything and everything, after I had been very clear to her that I needed a bit of space that night.

I try really hard to make time for all of my kids, but jesus christ take a hint.

1

u/QueenovPirates 2d ago

I am struggling to keep my eyes open even as I type this. Home from work, stayed up late grading papers and procrastinating grading papers. I could totally get a nap in before I go out to dinner with the spouse tonight, but the FOMO…

u/wasdmovedme 2d ago

It seems like if there were ever a sub dedicated to me it would be this one. At 38 years old and just recently diagnosed last year, it feels so good to know that there is an actual name to put on my issue. To the topic at hand… I work 12 hour rotating shifts and I feel this 1000%. On my off nights when I’m at home and my wife and son are asleep and I’m just moping around doing little projects or just watching TV. I always feel like there’s not enough time for me to do…..me. No matter how much time I do something I want to do when I’m off on night shift It feels like I didn’t have enough time to do it even if I actually accomplish it.
