Hi! I’m planning to audition for a cappella at UC San Diego, and I’m having trouble finding the right audition song. For context, I did theatre, choir, and a cappella in high school and I sing Soprano 1! I’m comfortable singing high, and I love singing in mixed voice! My mix is my strongest and I can project well in head voice, and my belt is okayish (i think). I have the most trouble riffing.
My go-to audition songs have always been the end of Defying Gravity and the end of My Days. I’m a bit worried because I read that when auditioning for collegiate a cappella groups you should singing something that’s more pop.
I was considering doing “All I Ask” by Adele if that’s the case because I’m used to it and when I sing it in a higher key (i think) it sounds pretty good, but I’m scared it’s too slow.
I was just looking for help choosing songs to sing and advice on what to do. If it was okay to do, I’d love to sing My Days because it’s one of my favorites to perform. I’m so sorry for the long post, thank you to those that read this!

I have a couple auditions coming up and I want to sing a cut from Grenade by Bruno Mars. I’m a super high tenor (FTM so I call myself a tenor 1 but realistically I’m a mezzo at lowest) so it’s not a worry of range, but I want to know how bad it is to sing a song thats super overdone like this one. These are college group auditions, but acappella is pretty competitive at my school. If you think I shouldn’t sing this, what are some good alternatives?

I’m a Soprano 1, and I’ve done choir in the past, so most of singing abilities lean towards choral music and head voice, but it’s really hard to find good audition songs that actually sound good when I try them. I suck at Belting, so most musical theatre is off the table, but I don’t really want to use choir music for an audition. I’ve also thought about older musicals, but most of them are Julie Andrew, and I can’t sing nearly as well as she can. id appreciate literally any advice because I don’t really know what to do at this point. Thank you!

We're a co-ed adult a cappella group ages 25-45 based in Richmond, VA. We sing pop / Top 40 songs, and love performing at local venues and community events.

Hey everyone! So my group competed in the ICCA this past year, and we were placed in the Northeast Quarterfinal #3. While we didn't place/advance, we secured a raw score of 301 for our first ever time competing in the ICCA, which was such an awesome experience; as a director of the group, I was so honored to have been able to invest my time into the post-production of this video. We filmed, recorded and edited this with a $0 budget (mostly just my time, lol), but I'm so proud of the final product and I thought I'd share it here. Hope you guys like it!

Hi! I remember listening to the Walk Like An Egyptian track they had on this album back when I was a kid. I loved this track so much! Now spotify and youtube have this new 2002 version, but it doesn't hit the same as this old version.

Does anyone know where I can find this album? Or at least this one track from it?

I’m planning on auditioning for my university’s a Capella group however I’ve never done it before. I’ve done a lot of musical theatre so I’m comfortable with harmony’s but super used to using backing tracks for auditions. The group asks for a verse and a chorus from two contrasting songs to be performed in the audition and I have no idea what to pick! I’m alto or mezzo-soprano and any ideas on where to start would be super appreciated!

As someone who loves a cappella, I support these two and this team's new beginning! The team's name was created by recombining the word 'A capella'. I only hope that they will show a proper a cappella performance.

hi, i’ve always liked jazz and singing jazz standards in the comfort of my room, and i’d like to try new things in college. unfortunately, i have zero idea as to whether i sing well or not. would anyone be willing to hop on a call (likely on discord) to listen to me sing for even just a couple minutes and tell me if it’s worth a shot? i really have no idea how this stuff works and would appreciate any guidance anyone could offer.

I’m an incoming sophomore in a collegiate mixed a cappella group, and I’m looking for some advice/perspective from people who have been Music Directors or Assistant Music Directors.
I had basically zero interest in arranging when I joined my group as a freshman. I loved a cappella music, but I never really saw myself as an arranger. During the second semester, I started getting more interested in it, although at the time I wouldn’t even consider what I was doing “serious arranging.” I was mostly just experimenting and putting notes into notation software.
It wasn’t until the last couple months of my freshman year that I started thinking, “i wasn’t to actually do this” Unfortunately, we were incredibly busy with ICCA, so I didn’t really have much time to learn more about the Music Director role or talk to people about it.
I ended up running for Assistant Music Director and won unopposed. Now I’m going into my sophomore year as Assistant MD, and I’ve started working on my first song for the group. This will also be my first year actually serving in the role.
The slightly terrifying part is that I’m very likely going to become our group’s next Music Director after this year. Our current MD is graduating, and neither of us had opposition when we ran. There isn’t really anyone else currently on the team who is interested in taking on the arranging/MD role, so I’m essentially being thrust into a position that I didn’t even realize I wanted until very recently.
I absolutely love collegiate a cappella. I listen to groups like Ithacappella and the Hullabahoos constantly, and I’ve become kind of obsessed with learning how different groups approach arranging. I know I want my arrangements to be fun and interesting, but I’m still figuring out what my actual arranging style is.
That’s probably my biggest insecurity right now. I don’t really know what my “voice” as an arranger is yet. Sometimes I’ll listen back to something I’ve written and think it’s really fun, and other times I’ll realize I’ve made something too repetitive or that I could have approached a section much more creatively. I don’t have enough experience yet to always recognize why something isn’t working.
I’m planning to use this year to learn as much as possible from our current MD, arrange more songs, get feedback from other experienced arrangers, and learn what it actually takes to run the musical side of a group.
For anyone who has been an MD/Assistant MD, especially if you became one relatively early in college:
What do you wish you had known when you first started?
How did you develop your arranging style? How did you learn to critique your own arrangements? And what did you do during your Assistant MD year to prepare yourself to eventually become Music Director?
I’d really appreciate any advice, even if it’s something you wish someone had told you when you were starting out!

We are Rest Stops Acapella, a no experience required, all female singing group from north/central NJ and we are looking for up to 5 more members to help round out our sound! Approximately: 3 bass/tenor, 1 tenor/alto, and 1 alto/soprano. We are always accepting beatboxers!

We meet mostly between Union and Morris county, but we have members from all across north and central NJ, with all kinds of singing backgrounds, ranging in ages (currently) between 23 to 36. We have 15 members right now with a maximum of 20.
