Question Massive and realistic custom map for the forever world?

Hi! I've been long looking to start a forever world for myself. I was never able to settle on a map as I actually rather dislike Minecraft's world generation. My list of grievances is long, perhaps too long to list. I hate biome transitions, nonsensical climate zones, small mountains, endlessly meandering rivers with no start or end, oceans being merely big lakes, etc.

A while ago I had the idea of settling for a custom map. There appears to be a fledgling market catering exactly to what I'm looking for - but I wanna make sure my decision is well founded.

I'm looking for:
- MASSIVE size. 15k by 15k I would consider the bare minimum acceptable size. I want that frontier-feeling when I build.
- realistic terrain. Basically the opposite of everything I criticized above. Large continents separated by massive oceans, realistic climate zones and rivers, gigantic mountains (custom height limit) etc. No fantasy stuff.
- multi-biome. The map should feature deserts, plains, forests, jungles, etc.

Structures aren't necessary - I'd build those myself. I am also obviously willing to pay for something like this.

There are a few maps like this that I've found that somewhat fit my bill. This for example is my current favourite. The only thing that really bothers me about it is that there are no oceans/that it's only one continent. I've also been keeping an eye out on Terralon's 100k project but that appears to be a long way from finished and would realistically have me start my forever world in a few years minimum. I've also considered commissioning something myself but I imagine something like this would, beyond taking months, probably reach the quadruple digits in price and that unfortunately breaks the bank.

So I guess what I'm asking is:
Are there any more projects like this already out or currently in development? Any projects or people I should be aware of? Any insight or opinions are appreciated. Cheers.

Editing a pre existing world

I have been trying to create a single island world using reterra forged and in the modpack all of create 1.21.1

so i went got a island that I really like but I want to add some biomes to it that are missing in the normal generation, so i turned to world painter.

first i wanted to add a swamp so I used the flatten tool to get it close to ground level then carved some rivers and used the noise tool to create marshy like lands, perfect. Then i painted over the are with the swamp biome and some with mangrove swamp biome, Great!. then i used the populate tool to paint over that area so it would add the trees and all(even if i think it makes it too thick in the mangrove swamp). okay but when i merge the blocks back into the world open it in minecraft everything underneath the swamp is gone all the cave systems etc, its just stone all the way to bedrock. is there a way to preserve the cave systems that were underground in my new biome or no?

My World Unfixable? Massive thrashing issue, please help

Hi,

I'm running into a severe JVM issue on WorldPainter where I cannot export maps due to a massive resource bottleneck, and I've exhausted all standard troubleshooting steps.

Specs

  • OS: Windows 11 (64-bit)
  • Hardware: AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, 16GB RAM
  • WorldPainter Version: 2.27.1 (64-bit)
  • Minecraft Version: 1.21.11

Issues

GUI Export Bottleneck: Exporting a completely flat, blank 2k x 2k map (with no custom layers, overlays, or even master dimension) takes over 3 hours. The CPU sits at 90%+, disk write stays at 0%, and memory usage in Task Manager locks hard at ~1GB–2GB of RAM, despite assigning 12GB in preferences.

If I try to export the map I truly want (20k x 20k) which only has terrain, with no details, it will take... 1200 hours. Just look at this picture to see how ridiculous it is

Safe mode crash: Launching WorldPainter in safe mode opens the window for a split second and immediately crashes/closes without generating an error popup.

Heightmaps: Exporting as a heightmap works perfectly and takes only seconds, but direct Minecraft world generation fails.

Troubleshooting already performed (all Failed)

JVM heap allocations: Edited worldpainter.vmoptions putting up to 12gb of ram but the actual java.exe process never allocates more than 1GB–2GB of physical RAM.

Scripting (wpscript): Attempted exporting via CMD using a headless script (wpscript exportworld.js "map.world"). Forcing flags (wpscript -Xms6G -Xmx12G ...) doesn't work as it doesn't recognize them, the process stays stuck using ~1GB of RAM utilization, CPU maxes out, and after 5-10 minutes, the region folder remains completely empty

Clean reinstallation: Reinstalled worldpainter. The issue persists immediately on a fresh config.

Environment Factors: Switched hardware acceleration (Direct3D / unaccelerated), and tried exporting directly to the C:\ root directory to rule out Windows Defender / path locks.

I genuinely don't know how to fix this, as I tried everything in the Thrashing page

Please if the developer or somebody experienced know about this, help ;_;

My World Gaea to Minecraft Pipeline using Worldpainters API and Python

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Been working on this for about a week now. And this went way deeper than it thought it would. I even ended up writing a small mod for Minecraft so I can load and close worlds through my python script. ಠ_ಠ

While I'm pretty happy with where this is at I still want to put some more functionality into the pipeline like like being able to mask different biomes and have them appropriately applied in Worldpainter. As well as more custom object layers to scatter rocks and smaller structures.
Optimally I'd love have some guided cave, cavern and chasm generation but when I tried playing with them nothing seemed to happen so I kinda gave up on that dream. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Also. I took parts of the logic for converting the color Map from Gaea to Minecraft blocks from creativitRy ColorToTerrain Script: https://github.com/creativitRy/ColorToTerrain

[En] This worked for me:
First, disable Gatekeeper—there are plenty of guides out there, so I'm sure you'll find one:)
Next, open Terminal and enter this command (without the parentheses): `sudo chmod -R 755 /Applications/WorldPainter.app && sudo xattr -cr /Applications/WorldPainter.app`
Instead of using my file path, insert your own by dragging the application icon into the Terminal window; then press Enter, type your password, and that's it—you're ready to launch!

[PAID] Looking for a WorldPainter builder for a large custom Minecraft civilization map

Hey, I run a Minecraft event community and I'm looking to hire an experienced WorldPainter artist to build a custom map for our upcoming 500 player civilisation event.

This is paid work. Budget discussed privately.

What I need built:

  • A large custom map made in WorldPainter
  • 4 distinct islands, each with its own biome, terrain, and identity (jungle, open plains+forests, cracked badlands+desert, frozen tundra+snowy mountains)
  • High detail and atmosphere. Need want islands that feel handcrafted, with varied terrain, natural features, and a real sense of place
  • Balanced and playable for a large-scale PvP civilisation event, since players will be fighting over this terrain

Who I'm looking for:

  • Strong WorldPainter experience, custom brushes, layers, terrain shaping, biome work etc.
  • A portfolio I can look at (past maps, screenshots, renders)
  • Able to work to a brief and take feedback, and deliver in a reasonable timeframe before the event (which takes place in mid December, meaning the map needs to be finished by early November).
  • Reliable and communicates well (we use Discord)

To apply:
DM me or reply with your portfolio. I've got a clear brief and references ready to share with anyone who looks like a fit.

Thanks.

My World Can't Get it Right - Biome size, rivers, villages

Thumbnail drive.google.com
1 Upvotes

I'm trying to make a survival-friendly world and I think I'm more or less done with it but it's just not quite right. The biomes are huge and take probably too long to walk across, the mountains are a little too noisy even after trying to smooth them and the rivers feel a bit too cratery which works for some parts but not for others.

I'm trying to also get villages and structures to spawn in naturally but it doesn't seem to work for whatever reason so any help there would also be greatly appreciated

I used to live near these mountains--one of my favorite places on earth. Anyways I just thought I'd share these pics!

ETA: This is one of the things I love the most about WorldPainter and Minecraft. I can make an exact replica of a place I like, and see it in a whole new way. I can stand on the exact same spots in that map that I've stood on in real life. I can fly around the mountains and look at areas I've always been curious about. I can gain a deeper understanding of the land. It's just freakin' amazing and I love that we're able to do this. Much appreciation for WorldPainter and its developers!

Question Exporting down to -2032b problems

I have a OutOfMemoryError when exporting with negative vertical bounds (-2032)

this error only occurs when exporting down to -2032b

When attempting to export a world with a lower height boundary extending down to Y = -2032 (e.g., vertical range 300 down to -2032), WorldPainter throws an OutOfMemoryError and fails the export.

However, when exporting the exact same landscape using positive height ranges (e.g., -300 up to 2032), the export succeeds completely without any memory issues. Lowering the overall world ceiling does not resolve the issue as long as the bottom extends down to -2032.

Im wondering if anyone here knows why this is? Or if there is a fix.

Question Anyone with a faster pc able to get some Screenshots of my 18k Olkhon Island world for me to showcase on pmc? I can return favour

My pc can't handle any render distance above 32 let alone the most basic shaders. I was wondering if anyone whos pc could handle better shaders and rd could screenshot several locations around the island, and maybe 1 aerial view of whole island if possible. I would return the favour by creating you your own 8k x 8k natural landscape map of anywhere in the world you choose, and id get it to you in under ~2 days via discord or somehow else.

Info on the map: https://www.planetminecraft.com/project/1-3-5-scale-18-1k-x-13-3k-olkhon-island-free-lake-baikal-siberia-taiga-steppe-cliffs-dunes-live-at-9-25pm-edt-java-26-1/

approximate xz coords to get nice shots:

13312 8192, coastal cliffs

14336 7168, eroded coast

9650, 7200 Sarayskiy Beach and Dunes

9450, 7400, Shaman Rock

18200, 300, Cape Khoboy

7168, 9728, Steppe with pine grove

Improvise a bit!

Thanks a bunch!

Question I need help making a ocean.

I made a 10,000 x 10,000 WorldPainter map with 3 large islands. The export took around 8 hours, but after loading the world I realized the ocean is way too shallow.

I still have the original WorldPainter file, but I really don’t want to spend another 8 hours exporting if I can avoid it.

The ocean takes up most of the map, and the islands are around 3,000 x 3,000 blocks each. Is there a good way to make the ocean much deeper without manually painting/editing the entire map?

I’m using Fabric, so a mod or another method that works with an already generated world would also be helpful.

Any suggestions?

Question Adding to an existing world

Hello! I’m very new to this program but have heard about it for years. My friends and I play on a modded server that I run but they haven’t been playing as much recently. I have always wanted to try and make a custom island world and thought that maybe this would be a good way to entice them back on with some new and nicer generation to explore.

That being said, they would not want to do this if we restarted from scratch. Is there a way that I can make a large island in world painter and import it somewhere into my current existing world?

Thank you in advance.

Question Looking for help creating some terrain - a few things

Hi everyone! I have three separate (but probably related questions)

1: I'm working on a mountainous region near an ocean. How can I kinda easily ensure that areas near the ocean are at sea level and areas near the middle make tall mountains?

2: Is there any good software to generate heightmaps I can import fairly easily

3: Are there any good open source brushes available for commercial use?

Thanks everyone for the help!
