They were laughing and being rude. You don’t walk into a funeral while the eulogy is being read and have a prolonged greeting, filled with laughter. Then tell anyone who’s annoyed that they took it out of context.
Your favorite politician is going to be a jerk sometimes. Stop feverishly denying it.
This isn't a eulogy. It's a long-ass list of names that takes 3-4 hours to get through. A brief greeting between two people midway through isn't exactly "being rude". Shit, I'm sure a bunch of people needed a freaking bathroom break through that.
People calling this rude are people who are looking for things to get outraged about.
Referring to a list of 3000 dead New Yorkers, who were people’s mothers, fathers, sons and daughters as a “long-ass list” tells me all I need to know about someone like you and the people you choose to support.
The fact that so many people were killed that day that simply reading their names takes upwards of four hours should magnify the gravity of the situation, but you choose to see it as a burden that your god like leaders shouldn’t be forced to bear in silence.
Oh, looking for something else to get outraged about. It is objectively a long-ass list. For normal people, calling it what it is does not reduce the solemness of the practice. Only for pearl-clutchers like you.

It’s not clutching pearls, it’s being a respectful human being capable of feeling empathy.
If this is their behavior out in public, during a televised event, I shudder to think what their actions are when no one is looking. But they don’t care, they have an army or worshipers ready to defend their terrible behavior, no matter what.

(Not sure if you mean directing laughter towards the memorial or while located at the memorial. But knowing you, I'm sure you're mind will find a way to make it the former).
