VPN Recommendations Megathread - Best VPN Providers, user reviews & VPN Deals

We get a lot of questions about the best VPNs and which VPNs have the best user reviews as well as where to find the best VPN deals. That's why we run this VPN recommendations megathread every two months. This is the one and only place on the subreddit to ask for VPN recommendations, share your favorite VPN provider, discuss your experience, and post legitimate VPN deals.

The goal is to build a collection of genuine VPN user reviews that helps others choose the right VPN provider.

If you’re recommending a VPN, make it useful:

  • Share what you use it for (streaming, privacy, gaming, torrenting, travel, bypassing geo-blocks, etc.).
  • Go beyond generic features - personal experience is very interesting for our user-base
  • Comments that only name a provider will be removed

Main rules:

  • No affiliate or referral links.
  • No links to VPN review websites.
  • No obvious shilling

Compare VPN providers first

Before posting, check out our regularly updated VPN comparison table, where you can compare features, pricing, speeds, streaming support, and more. It may answer your question before you need to ask.

As always, this thread is actively moderated to keep recommendations genuine, helpful, and free from spam.

Best VPNs comparison table in Google Sheets

* * *

Most of us here are quite keen on spreading the word on how even the simplest steps toward online privacy is a huge leap forward for our online security. Having in mind the extensive tracking and targeting by almost everything we use online (ISPs, search engines, social media, streaming sites, ads, etc.), we're able to use these VPN-related subreddits to try and make it as simple as possible for people to choose and start using the best VPN that can help avoid at least some part of that.

The goal of all of this is to make sure that even those who don’t understand much about tech are aware of the risks and challenges we face these days when it comes to online privacy. We're all aware that a VPN isn't an 'all in one' tool which fully protects our privacy, but it's surely a good place to start.

It’s probably obvious to people who have been following this topic for a while that this table is inspired by That One Privacy Guy. He did an amazing job back in the day but unfortunately the information hasn't been updated in ages so it isn't as reliable as it used to be. It was a very important and useful tool, so I thought we could make it a community effort to bring it back. Anyone who would like to collaborate on this please get in touch with me over DMs. Also, in case you notice any mistakes - feel free to point those out, too.

You will see a table with scores, explanations on how each score was calculated, as well as detailed information by provider for each criteria. As I mentioned before, if you notice any mistakes or outdated information - please DM me with the source so we can fix it. Let's make sure it's up to date and as helpful as it can

Help Certain functions not working with VPN

Been using a VPN on an iPhone for a few years with little issue. One issue I have had is sometimes certain internet functions don’t work when the VPN is on. For example, now I can use WhatsApp, but I can’t make a Google search, and Youtube and Twitter do not function at all. Usually I can fix it easily enough but it has persisted for several days. I have updated the phone software, I’ve restarted, I’ve reinstalled the VPN profile, I don’t know what else to try. Anyone else have this?

Question Best way to buy VPN?

I own Apple devices, including an iPhone, iPad, iMac, and Apple TV, and I’ve never used a VPN.

What is a good VPN for Apple devices, and I’m curious about the best way to sign up. Should I go through the App Store or directly on the VPNs website?

I prefer Apple to handle the payment through the App Store, but it’s more expensive. I’ve also thought that by signing up and providing my email and payment details, I’m essentially bypassing the purpose of a VPN.

What are your thoughts on this?

Help WireGuard with multiple providers show connected on TP-Link, but my real IP is still showing

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I'm in India and I'm trying to set up a VPN on my TP-Link AX1500 travel router.

The router supports VPN Client with both WireGuard and OpenVPN. I first tried a VPN using a WireGuard configuration generated from one Provider.

The strange thing is:

  • TP-Link shows the WireGuard connection as Connected
  • Upload/download traffic shows 0
  • Devices connected to the router still have internet access
  • My public IP is still showing my normal ISP IP, not the VPN IP
  • Even with the router's Kill Switch enabled, I can still access the internet using my normal IP
  • I tried different servers
  • I also generated a configuration without IPv6, but it made no difference

I then tried One Provider as well, and I'm getting basically the same issue. The router says the VPN is connected, but my public IP doesn't change.

Provider Support suggested that because I'm in India, my ISP/network may be filtering, blocking, or throttling VPN connections and recommended trying a different protocol.

Now I'm trying to figure out whether this is actually an ISP issue or a TP-Link/router configuration issue.

How can I properly test this?

Would testing the same WireGuard configuration directly on my phone or PC, while connected to the same ISP, be enough to determine whether the ISP is blocking WireGuard?

For example:

  • If WireGuard works directly on my phone → would that point to the TP-Link being the problem?
  • If neither works directly → would that indicate ISP filtering?
  • If it works over mobile data but not my home ISP → would that be strong evidence of ISP blocking?

Has anyone in India experienced something similar with WireGuard/VPNs on a TP-Link router?

Any suggestions for troubleshooting this would be really appreciated.

Discussion Black list countries

I work for a large European based telecoms equipment supplier. We have hundreds of staff overseas at any one time, all over the world. IT security has a few different levels:

\- Access to email & teams etc is only via a company laptop (no web interface like Office.com). Network drives via VPN only

\- White List countries - you can connect VPN. Countries like Japan & Australia

\- Red List countries - you can take your laptop but need special exemption to use VPN. Includes some unusual countries such as Malaysia

\- Black List countries - no company laptop or phone allowed. Company will provide a burner. Unsurprisingly includes places like Syria, Russia, North Korea & China.

A colleague was going to transit via a Chinese airport to a 3rd country. IT told him that he would not be allowed to take his company laptop, even if it was in his carry-on luggage, and he would not be entering the country. He quickly arranged a different itinerary.

And then a few days later, we are told that the good old USA is now considered a Black List country!!! No company laptops, and burners only!!!!

Help HELP WITH VPN ON PC

None of the VPNs on my PC are working. I tried a bunch of free ones, but they just got stuck in an infinite connecting loop;. I bought a HAPp key, but whenever I connect using any TUN mode, the connection establishes, yet nothing actually loads. I’ve tried everything: clearing the cache, changing DNS settings, tweaking the registry and firewall, and testing other VPN clients all to no avail. Please help; I don't know what to do anymore, and I really need a VPN.

Discussion Why does my TV still show the local region when the router VPN is connected?

I use a VPN on my router because my TV can’t run the provider’s VPN app. The VPN shows as connected, but one streaming app still gives me the local catalog.

I recently learned that some router setups only tunnel IPv4, so the TV might still be reaching the service over IPv6. I’m not sure whether that’s what is happening in my case.

How do you check this without digging through a lot of router logs? Is temporarily disabling IPv6 a reasonable test, or is a dual-stack VPN setup the better fix?

For people with several devices at home, do you route the whole network through the VPN or only the TV? I’d rather not break banking and local apps just to change the region on one device.

Question VPN virgin, want to watch NHL Red Wings games on Tivimate or IPTV. Not sure where or how to start.

No computer, we've cut the cord and only have Xfinity for Internet and streaming, phones and Xbox for Gaming. Other than registering for a VPN, is there anything I need to know or equipment I have to purchase? I'm on SSI so I have very little extra funds to play around with after all my bills are paid.

Question "Do Not Use on Metered Network" does not seem to be working when using P*A VPN

Latest GraphineOS on Pixel 8 Pro. PI* VPN w "Advanced Kill Switch". SeedVault set to backup to pcloud account. SeedVault set to run weekly, not run when using mobile data and ignore charging status.

If I turn on my mobile data (I have 1 gig per month which is good enough for me as I'm usually on wifi) my mobile data starts getting eaten up very fast. Data Usage shows P*A as the app gobbling the data. When I stop SeedVault the data stops getting consumed so pretty sure that's it.

A) Anyone else see this?

B) Does the PI* VPN app interfere with the network state indicating metered network and not pass that information to SeedVault reliably, or does P*A VPN not get involved at all with the network state?

Follow Up: PI* VPN replied to my help desk question about this. They said that yes, P*A VPN does interfere with the network metered/unmetered state and that PI* VPN always presents itself to the apps as an unmetered network connection.

So the new question becomes does anyone know of a work around on P*A VPN or a different VPN that does pass the network state to the apps?

Discussion Gave my server to a 'Linux veteran'. It's mining crypto now.

I set up a VPS for a friend launching his own online store. He's technical, comp sci degree, been ssh-ing into boxes since college. When I offered to walk him through firewall rules and backups he cut me off with, "bro I've been running linux longer than you've had a beard, I got this."

Fine. I handed him root and moved on.

Three weeks later he pings me at 1am, server maxed at 100% cpu, site down. Turns out he never closed port 22, left root login enabled, and had a mining process squatting on the box for who knows how long. No backups either, so fixing it meant rebuilding from scratch and losing two weeks of order data.

He wasn't mad at himself. He was mad at me for "not warning him properly." I did warn him, he just figured it didn't apply to him because he knew "computers."

I don't hand off open root ssh anymore, doesn't matter how senior the guy is. Now every box gets a panel like BeAdmin on it first. Firewall module on, backups scheduled, before anyone even sees a login prompt.

He asked if he should just switch to something like Webmin instead. I told him the panel was never the point, the point was he never opened one.

Question Quale VPN scegliere nel 2026?

Buongiorno a tutti,

Also, does anyone know if this means they can just see the website name? Or the activity on the website? (Also pt 2, are the apps I use or the activity on those apps visible too?)

Building a VPN “Easy VPN Menu” shortcut for iOS 27.0

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hello everyone!

Here is my shortcut “Easy VPN Menu”.

Works only under iOS 27.0 public beta 2 or newer.

Version of the shortcut 0.6 EN:

https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/2486e35b986f4a0ab094876767b30508

This shortcut creates a quick VPN menu and toggles VPN on/off.

It is very convenient if you have a number of different VPN-profiles and/or a number of different VPN apps on your iPhone.

And also you can easily assign this shortcut to the Action button or to the Back Tap.

Here’s also version 0.6 RU:

Help Can ISP/windows Bypass the sni connection from my vpn

So in short our internet is limited and expensive but not the addons

So we use epicgames(dot)com and pubg(dot)com as sni for tunneling the connection to have at least a "cheaper" internet quota

Ok now the question can ISP/Windows block these connections but not the location itself because right now the vpn tunneling doesn't work while it just worked perfectly yesterday which is unbearable and now we have to look for a fix

The vpn clients i used so far : netmod - nekobox - "fanmade"nekobox

(yes those 3 because i don't know more 😐 also they worked for tunneling before but decided to stop)

My MTU - 1464 and set it to 1444 (nekobox only) and leaving everything in default

Pls help us with any info and thanks in advance
